Torah Academy's 11th Anniversary Dinner is March 9th

We are pleased to announce that Torah Academy of Boca Raton's 11th Anniversary Dinner will take place on Tuesday, March 9th, 2010 at Temple Beth Israel in Deerfield Beach.

As we celebrate the 11th Anniversary of Torah Academy, it is especially fitting that we pay tribute to Rick and Sue Andron, to Michael and Cornelle Selig and to Rabbi Amir and Gita Guttman as our esteemed honorees. Our honorees share a deep commitment to Jewish education, Torah Academy, and the Boca Raton Jewish Community.

We invite you to join us in honoring, Rick and Sue Andron, Michael and Cornelle Selig, Rabbi Amir and Gita Guttman and in supporting Torah Academy by placing a tribute in the ad journal. The Annual Dinner is Torah Academy's primary fundraising event and the journal is the key to the campaign's success. The Annual Dinner provides vital funds that enable Torah Academy to provide the finest Jewish and secular education.

For more information on placing a tribute ad in the journal, please contact Rabbi Reuven Feinberg at rfeinberg@torahacademybr.org

A Mother-Daughter Moment

A Mother-Daughter Moment...

Sunday's Mother-Daughter Luncheon was as enjoyable as anticipated! The tremendous turnout, delicious food, and beautifully decorated room, laid the basis for valuable Chavrusas, Chizuk from Mrs.Tamar Meth, and musical entertainment from Kitahs Daled and Hey.

"It was inspiring to walk into the room during Chavrusahs and hear the hum of Torah insights passing between mothers and daughters.  It was rewarding to recognize the enjoyment moms and girls had spending a morning together with good food and good friends," said Mrs. Allison Zak, event chair.

PS: keep an eye out for a gift from the luncheon coming home with your daughter next week!

"I loved the whole day and was excited to sing and learn with my mother, but I was a little bit nervous to sing," said Miriam Baumann, fourth grade.

Thank you to all those who attended the Luncheon and especially to Mrs. Allison Zak and Mrs. Tamar Meth for their contributions and Chizuk.
Do POLITICS and DERECH ERETZ mix?

In this week's Parsha, Hashem charges Moshe with his mission. "Behold I have made you a master over Pharoah." Rashi adds "To rule over him with plagues and tortures." (Shmos 7,1) Pharoah had enslaved the Jewish people, bathed in their babies' blood - literally - and brought horrible and inhumane suffering to adults and children alike. Pharoah ridiculed Hashem, His people, and His representatives. (For example, "Who is Hashem?" Shmos 5, 2) Hashem now gives Moshe the mandate to crush the mighty and cruel Pharoah and bring him and his nation to their knees.

Intrestingly, there's another part to Moshe's mission. "Hashem spoke to Moshe and Aharon regarding Pharoah, king of Eygpt." (Shmos 6, 13) The Medrash explains that Moshe was to accord honor to Pharoah, for we have a rule that "One must accord proper respect to the royal leaders." (Shmos Rabba 7,3)  Indeed, we find that Moshe threatened Pharoah that "your servants will come begging in the middle of the night" when in truth he meant Pharoah himself, but he felt it was disrespectful to say it outright. (Shmos 11, 8)

This is a fascinating mandate! Moshe is to threaten, bring punishment and torture, crush and subdue a powerful and despicable monarch, but he is to give him proper respect at the same time! Yes, he was charged to save the Jewish people and bring punishment to Pharoah and Egypt. But he must not forget a basic rule of Derech Eretz that "one must give proper dignity to a monarch!" Each statement and action must be considered with this balance and sensitivity.  This type of multifaceted and delicate responsibility is but one example of the Torah's beautiful and deep approach to man's interpersonal interactions.

In our time, we have all but forgotten this balance. A political leader, senator, or even president may be wrong in our opinion, may be acting improperly, and may even be leading in a dangerous direction, but we still have an obligation to refer to the leader with dignity! At the same time that we may rally thousands of protests, and do everything in our power to fight policies and actions, a leader is still a leader, and Derech Eretz requires honor for a leader. A leader may be against everything that is proper and holy, but our own responsibility to the guidelines of Derech Eretz requires us to act and speak with proper dignity. May we merit to apply the beautiful and delicate guidelines of Derech Eretz to our daily lives.

Have a great Shabbos.

Early Childhood Encounters

Bedtime has never been so simple!

In this cold weather it isn't always easy to get out of warm, cozy pajamas. So, Mrs. Silver's Kindergartener's stayed in them! As a special treat last week, Mrs. Silver invited the children to wear their favorite PJ's and bring their most precious stuffed toys to join them for a day of learning.

"The kids were so excited to bring their blankets, pillows and slippers," said Mrs. Silver. The day was filled with hot chocolate, sprinkles and whipped cream as they cuddled up for bedtime stories.

Second Graders Take a Magical Journey Through the Civil War

The second grade is learning all about the Civil War by recreating a battlefield. Mrs. Tabor's second graders are excited about their newest novel, The Civil War on Sunday, a Magic Tree House book. The students are reading out loud each day and with discussion based learning, they are asking probing questions about slavery and civil rights. "Using character novels is a great way to teach larger ideas like the Civil War," said Mrs. Tabor. "The characters go on a journey and that is more relatable for the students," added Mrs. Tabor.

"I can't wait to set up a battlefield and show the Civil War. I am bringing in lots of soldiers," said Binyomin Zwelling.

 Q. If I forget 'Yaale V'yavo' on Rosh  Chodesh, do I need to repeat Benching?   (Paysach Feinberg)

A. No. The general rule is that if a meal is required, (like on Yom Tov) if you forget Ya'ale V'yavo you must repeat Benching. But when the meal is not required (like on Rosh Chodesh), you do not need to repeat Benching.
