May is National Electrical Safety Month
Hazards commonly found in older homes are
increasingly causing fires and fatalities in the U.S.

However, by taking a few simple steps and by incorporating newer technology you can protect your home from many of these dangers. Each year the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) sponsors May as National Electrical Safety Month. For this year's campaign, the foundation is helping consumers to take an active roll in identifying older home hazards and in safeguarding their families from the dangers these hazards pose.

Home electrical problems account for nearly 55,000 home fires every year. These fires cause over 500 deaths, injure more than 1,400 people, and account for $1.4 billion in property damage. Older homes are at even greater risk to fire. According to the US Census Bureau, half of the homes in the United States were built before 1973. These homes and electrical systems were built before many of the appliances and electronics that we commonly use today were even around. To put this into perspective, a third of US homes were built before hair dryers or electric can openers were invented! Half of the homes were built before the advent of the garage door opener or the home computer!

"As each year goes by Americans are using more energy in their homes," says Brett Brenner, President of ESFI. "Many homes and electrical systems in the US are simply being overburdened leading to fires, deaths, and injuries."

We are providing our customers with a checklist below which will allow customers to identify electrical dangers commonly found in each room of their home. This checklist can be found here: Electrical Safety Checklist. Will also be educating owners of older homes on newer fire prevention technology such as Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCIs). These advanced electronic circuit breakers detect dangerous conditions in a home's wiring and cut off power to the circuit before a fire develops.

Additionally, the we are encouraging those living in older homes with children to install tamper resistant receptacles. These devices look like normal electrical outlets except they have a built-in shutter system that prevents children from inserting foreign objects into the slots. These outlets will prevent most of the 2,400 burns sustained by children each year from outlets.

Please remember that landscape lights should be installed by a licensed electrician as they require permits. Landscapers should not be installing your landscape lighting.

home and would like an electrical safety inspection.

How Much Garden Can You Handle?

Absolute beginners can take a tip from Cornell University's Department of Horticulture. New gardens can skip the investment in tools, fencing, raised gardens and the like by starting this way:

veggard

Dig up a 4-foot square in your lawn and sprinkle lettuce seeds on it.

No fertilizer is needed because lettuce will grow any place grass grows.

You won't have to pull weeds, because if you sprinkle enough seeds, weeds won't have a place to grow.

Your 4 x 4 garden will fill the family's salad bowl for about six weeks. The lettuce will be fresh and more nutritious than what you buy in the supermarket.

In May, gardeners are eager to get started on the real thing. They want fresh air, exercise and the cash savings that come from growing their own produce.

But how much can they save?

According to Burpee Seed company, a pack of green bean seeds will produce a $75 crop. The lowly potato will give back at least $5 for every $1 in seeds that you sow.

Six tomato plants can produce 12 to 15 tomatoes a day at their peak, enough for eating, cooking, and freezing for winter stews or spaghetti sauce. Six pepper plants will do almost the same thing.

If you have the space, a few rows of sweet corn will produce more than you can use, but it's good eatin' when you cut the corn from the cob, bring it to a boil and freeze it for the winter.

Amateurs are excited about getting started. They love to see their new sprouts and developing vegetables. Unfortunately, when the hot summer sun comes their way, the faint of heart and weak of muscle may forget the whole thing and head for their air conditioned sun rooms.

The moral of this story: Don't plant more garden than you can maintain.

How to Avoid Dangerous Airline Health Risks

Commonly known ailments include colds and respiratory infections, joint aches, jet lag, and even deadly pulmonary embolism. Here are a few tips for preventing these problems:

plane

Stop Backache and Neck Pain: Place a rolled blanket behind your lower back. Consider using a U-shaped neck pillow. And consider these two exercises during your flight: 1) Head Circles: tilt your head gently in a circular motion to the front (chin down), then to the right, then back, then to the left, and front again. 2) Shoulder Circles: shrug your shoulders in a circular motion up, back, and down.

Lower Your Risk Of Pulmonary Embolism: A potentially deadly condition formed when a blood clot forms in your leg, then breaks away and travels to your lung where it cuts off your oxygen supply. To keep blood from pooling in your legs and lower body, take periodic walks during your flight. During your walks, stand on your toes and rock back and forth on your heels. If you cannot walk easily, perform heel rocks while in your seat - lifting your heels and rocking them back and forth to your toes. Also, consider leg lifts and straight leg exercises while in your seat.

Beating Jet Lag: There's a natural supplement you can take called Melatonin to reset your biological clock after your arrival (check with your physician). Before your new bedtime, take one to three mg. of Melatonin. Continue each night for two days if you're still having trouble adjusting. Also, consider getting outside exposure to the sun after your arrival.
Decorating the House for Mother's Day

mothersday

Kids and grown-ups alike focus more on mothers day gifts than on anything else. It's always about finding flowers or gift baskets. Many people start out by wanting to get a special gift but in the end it all boils down to flowers from the local florist. Then there's finding something for the kids too. Kids don't spend nearly as much time making mothers day gifts as they do engaged in activities for the day. Whether it's coloring or crafting, parents (and teachers) have to find something for the kids to do which is one of getting the kids involved and helping them make gifts. For kids who are too young, the pages they color or the shirts make hand prints on are the only gift they can actually give their moms and is one way of keeping them involved in the holiday.

Another way to get the kids to contribute to a gift for their moms is to teach them how to create that special day. Kids can be given all sorts of trivial tasks around the house that moms usually do so they appreciate her all the more and so that moms can get a break. To get the kids on board tell them you're 'decorating the house' for mothers day.

You've often heard the suggestion that cleaning the house can be a nice gift for any mom, get the kids to help clean the house. They can pick up their own toys and help fold laundry. For kids who are a bit older, they can help you make mom's breakfast for the day. Get the kids to make paintings to decorate the dining area and help you create a nice look for the table.

Since you're going to get the kids involved with the arrangements, get a present that the kids can enjoy with their mom like mothers day fruit baskets. It's something the whole family can enjoy together, or if you want to give your wife a real treat, buy her a nice fruit bouquet. Fruit bouquets are fruit sculptures that look like flowers and they're available in lots of mothers day arrangements with chocolate dipped strawberries and dipped pineapple slices shaped like daisies or hearts to make it look all the more delicious.

Friendly Electric is one of the best and you should use them for all repair services. Their tech's are knowledgeable and they take the time to walk you through your issue and solution options. Also, their well dressed and they wear protective shoe covers so they don't ruin your carpet. My tech's were Martin and Joe and both of them were awesome! Great work and they took time to double check the work and even show me my defective units that needed to be replaced.

"Hi Gabe,

I'm glad I met you and thank you for fixing the outside thing. It's rare that an owner will come to the job site to check and I appreciate that.

The couple of times I called your office, Joe answered all my questions and he was so helpful and pleasant. I also called on a Saturday and Jackie answered. She was really very nice also.

As for Andrew and Mariano, well there were no greater workers that I have had (and I have had a lot of work done in my home through 44 years of living here.)

Mariano explained in full what had to be done and he answered all my questions. He was so pleasant and wonderful. Andrew also came and helped him on the job and he was great.

Gabe, you did so good in hiring these people and I wanted to tell you how much I appreciated your men and women.

I will tell anyone who needs electrical work about you...

Thank you again.

Six Tips to Light
Up Your Kitchen

Give your kitchen a fresh look with a combination of ambient, task and decorative lighting.

Since the kitchen is such a draw these days, especially for the gourmet, you want to make sure that you have plenty of task lights to showcase the work spaces. But people tend to over-light, using too much wattage or just one super bright light in the center of the kitchen that leaves you standing in shadows.

Instead, try ambient, task and decorative lighting. The least expensive, easiest layer to add is under-cabinet lighting.

Choose a ceiling light for now and later. If your ceiling mount fixture is outdated, replace it with a newer model that has a nice finish and gives off a nice light, but isn't overly embellished. You want to make sure it will work with a contemporary or traditional decor.
