President's Message by Debbie Yee |
 Dear ,
It's March - and the first day of Spring is finally upon us. Plants begin to sprout new life and trees begin to bud.
Likewise, MAPTA begins to plan for a new upcoming year in March.
On April 6, incoming Program Chair Patty Ladpli will hold a Program Committee meeting at her residence. General meeting topics and fall workshop content will be discussed with much input coming from last month's successful Member Survey. Please consider adding your valuable input by attending the meeting or by email or phone.
In addition to April 6, be sure to add the March 14 Honors Recital at Morphy Hall to your calendar. It will be a beautiful afternoon of music.
Looking forward
Debbie Yee
MAPTA President
P.S. Please let me know if you are interested in being a chair for Honors Festival, Hospitality, Performers Supporting Performers, Adult Music Socials or Website.

PianoWorks! For Kids!! Saturday, February 6th |
Steinway Piano Gallery will present two PianoWorks! programs in March. Admission is free. The "grown-up" version of PianoWorks! on Thursday, March 18 at 6:30 PM, is the perfect workshop for parents considering upgrading from a used piano or keyboard and who are uncertain about what to look for in a good piano.
On Saturday, March 27 at 11 AM, an encore of last month's PianoWorks! For Kids!! workshop demystifies the piano and gets elementary and middle school students excited about making music. The program begins with a short, catchy video tour of a piano factory followed by hands-on exploration inside a real piano to learn how 12,000 parts come together to make music.

UW Chopin Extravaganza submitted by Jess Johnson |
To celebrate the 200th anniversary year of the birth of Frederic Chopin, the School of Music presents a two-day festival of his music. On Friday, March 12 at 8:00 PM, our very own Christopher Taylor will be performing a free concert in Mills Hall featuring Chopin's Sonata No. 2 in B-flat minor and Sonata No. 3 in B minor. Please encourage your students to attend his concert which is sure to inspire everyone and will kick off our celebration of Chopin's extraordinary life and music!
On Saturday, March 13, 2010 in MUSIC HALL from 9 AM to Noon, middle school and high school students will perform in master classes taught by UW piano faculty.
- At 1:30 pm, a community music recital presents teachers and amateur pianists in an informal setting of performance and personal reflection about Chopin.
- At 3:30 pm, a marathon performance of the complete mazurkas will feature most piano majors (both undergraduate and graduate) at the School of Music.
- At the midpoint of the marathon, about 4:45 pm, a reception in Music Hall lobby will allow performers and audience to meet and mingle.
The School of Music thanks the Evjue Foundation and Chancellor Emeritus Irving Shain for their sponsorship of the extravaganza.
ALL EVENTS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
We hope that you will join us for this celebration of Chopin's life and music!
Warmest wishes, Jess Johnson, Chair of Keyboard Martha Fischer, Ina Selvelieva, John Stowe, Christopher Taylor and Todd Welbourne

"I expect you not only to master music; I expect you to save the planet." |
Before her Overture Center debut last month, Steinway Artist Xiayin Wang took the time to talk with Nuances Editor Grant Billings about her passion for music education and her advice for teachers and students.
Jeanne Felix wanted to share Karl Paulnack's welcome address to The Boston Conservatory incoming class in 2004. It is amazingly insightful and inspring.

Play-a-thon 2010 from Renee Farley |
Madison Area Friends of Piano thanks all of the teachers, students, piano technicians, staff from AFCH and committee volunteers for the very successful 2010 Key-Up-for-Kids Piano Playathon held February 13th.
The students have raised over $10,000 so far for the American Family Children's Hospital and the money continues to come in throughout the month of February. Students can still turn in pledge money to their teachers who will then send it to MAFOP treasurer Connie Jones.
The drawing for the Great Wolf Lodge premium package will take place at the March 4th MAFOP meeting. The results of the teacher whose studio brought in the highest donation amount will also be known at that time. There are still tee shirts available for students turning in donations of $25. or more.
We are pleased to note that the following Hilldale merchants contributed to the Playathon: M&I Marshall & Ilsley bank (monetary donation to AFCH), Playthings (wooden play toy to AFCH) and the FlatIron Grill (discounted student dinner). We also thank Pedro's for dinner coupons to the players, Magic 98 for on-air promotions and Great Wolf Lodge for the gift certificate for a family of four for a night at the Wisconsin Dells Great Wolf Lodge. We also thank Channel 15 and Channel 3 for live coverage at the playathon. And, we thank Hilldale Shopping Center for hosting us every year.
If you have any questions or suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
When one thinks of the economy today, it is especially gratifying to support such a worthy cause in such a significant way. Bravo to all of you! |
2010 Young Composer's Festival by Shad Wenzlaff, YCF Chair |
Although it's barely spring, It's not too early to start thinking about student submissions to the MAPTA sponsored Young Composer's Festival. It's oftentimes useful to assign "two measures a week" for students who struggle with notation and the discipline of submitting compositions to the festival. So if March has 4 lessons, April and May 4 each, plus summer lessons, students will be successful in writing and notating a 24+ measure composition in time for the festival deadline! Dr. David Dies, Assistant Professor of Composition, Lawrence University (and UW-Madison School of Music graduate), will adjudicate our festival this summer. The deadline for composition submissions will be Friday, July 30, 2010. In other words, both the printed and the recorded CD or Digital MP3 versions of compositions must be in the chairperson's hands/possession by the time mail is delivered on July 30 please. This festival is open to MAPTA and non-MAPTA teachers and their students (an additional fee is imposed for non-MAPTA teachers/students). This is a "statewide" competition. Solo piano compositions will be judged by level. Students deemed "First Place" and "Runner Up" in each category, by our guest judge, will be invited to perform in a Sunday September 2010 recital event. For the sake of leveling competitions, students with duets will be asked to contact Shad at least 2 weeks prior to submission this year. Shad will coordinate an "info session/workshop" for teachers, which will be scheduled for early June. Pending funding and grant selection, MAPTA may be able to host Dr. Dies for this event. This session/workshop will also include ways to motivate students who might otherwise be reluctant to learn how to properly notate their original musical ideas. Interested teachers should contact Shad early to demonstrate level of interest, and help coordinate/facilitate such an offering. More information to come! Watch next month's Nuances for a submission form and details!

Piano Play Together by Diane Madsen |
The selection process is almost complete!
Over the last several months the 2010 Piano PlayTogether music selecting team has been scouring the multitudes of piano ensemble music to find the perfect pieces for this exciting event which will be held on Sunday, November 21, 2010.
The theme "Harmony for Humanity: Making a Better World through Music" has been a challenge, but a wonderful array of pieces that covers Levels I though VII has been selected. And new to this event will be an ensemble piece for adult students so that they can be a part of the fun. The event will open with a performance of the MAPTA commissioned original composition by Robert Vandall.
Be sure to attend the General Meeting in April when the music selection committee presents the pieces that will be used in this popular MAPTA concert event.
