President's Message by Debbie Yee |
 Dear ,
Yeah! It's February!!
I am always excited when this month arrives... it is a short one and it means that Spring is on the horizon.
Beginning this year, it also marks the month that MAPTA will send out an annual Member Survey. They year's survey is only a dozen questions and will take less than five minutes to complete. Please take the time to provide the board of directors with your feedback and suggestions.
February is also a month chock-full of exciting piano events in Madison for teachers and students:
Feb. 7 is the monthly YAR at Capital Lakes. Feb. 13 is the Play-a-thon at Hilldale Mall organized and conducted by members of MAFOP Feb. 20 is the WSMA auditions for Madison public schools Feb. 21 is the Federation Festival held at Ward-Brodt Music Company Feb. 27 is the auditions for the Honors Festival
It is quite a tribute to our piano community that so many different types of opportunities are offered. I hope everyone will be able to take advantage of some, if not all, of these wonderful events.
Please take special note that there are two new committees that are launching this month.
Looking forward
Debbie Yee
MAPTA President

New Committees by Debbie Yee |
Teachers' Studio Exchange
This past summer, Shad Wenzlaff and I experimented with a studio exchange. I observed him teach at his studio and he is planning to observe me at my studio sometime. I found that I gained more insight than I had expected and thought it might be a great idea to begin a list of teachers who are willing to open their studios for observation to fellow MAPTA teachers. Every month the list will be included in Nuances and hopefully will grow over time.
Standards Committee
Have you ever had a parent or student ask you what level they are? Have you ever had a student say their friend is a higher level than them because they are at level 3 in a particular teaching series and they are only at a level 2 in a different series? Have you ever wondered what is elementary, early elementary, etc?
To help MAPTA teachers better answer these questions, the Standards Committee will begin meeting twice each month to brainstorm guidelines and measurement for student progress such as; what are our standards for technic, theory, sight-reading, etc.? How do we measure them? How do we communicate them? The first meeting will be on Friday, February 12 at 9:00 am at my house (5718 Piping Rock Road). The second is scheduled for Friday, February 26 at 9:00 am at my house again. Please feel free to just show up to share ideas and enjoy coffee, tea and pastries.
Other Chairpersons Needed
Please let me know if you are interested in being a chair for Performers Supporting Performers, Adult Music Socials or Website.

Play-a-thon This Month from Renee Farley |
It is not too late to participate in the Key-Up-for-Kids Playathon at Hilldale Mall on Saturday, February 13. There are a few openings at the beginning of the day and near the end of the day. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to share their piano talents with the community and give a personal public service at the same time.
The students perform their piano pieces for donations. All of the money donated goes to the American Family Children's Hospital/Child Life Program. This program relies on donations to provide their services. The money is used to provide toys, games and supplies for many music and art activities for patients and their siblings during their stay at AFCH. Call Connie Jones at 442-8302 if you would like to reserve some time for your students.
The playathon is sponsored by Madison Area Friends of Piano. This organization is comprised of piano dealers, piano technicians and piano teachers. MAPTA is a member of this group. The MAFOP board would like to thank MAPTA for its 2010 donation of $250.00. This money helps defray expenses such as mailings, Playathon materials and Monster Concert supplies. The piano dealers donate the pianos and moving for the events. Members donate their time for these two events. The AFCH helps with publicity and tee-shirt production. Businesses have donated premiums to players, monetary donations to the cause, or items for the Child Life program. Magic 98 donates air time announcements. No monies raised at the playathon are used for administrative costs. Students that bring in $100 or more by February 28 will be in a drawing for a one-night stay in a family suite at Great Wolf Lodge in Wisconsin Dells. A prize will be awarded to the teacher whose students generate the highest donation total.
If you have questions contact Renee Farley by email or by phone at (608) 271-2626.

Exploring Music Resources by David Karbler |
There are some new issues from the FJH Music Company... In Recital with All-Time Favorites, Books 1-6. Edited by Helen Marlais. This series comprises a great collection of popular arrangements of children's classroom songs, traditional favorites, and a wide variety of popular folk songs. The series is carefully leveled into the following six categories: Early Elementary, Elementary, Late Elementary, Early Intermediate, Intermediate, and Late Intermediate.
A teacher duet part accompanies some of the earlier levels. All books include a CD with complete performances designed to assist with recital preparations and are priced between $6.95 - $7.95 Write,Play, and Hear Your Theory Every Day, Book 2. Helen Marlais with Peggy O'Dell and Kristen Avila. $7.95. This second volume helps students continue learning their theory in the most beneficial way - by playing, writing, and combining it with ear training at the same time! Students are asked to write the answers to theory examples, play them, and then do ear training activities to reinforce each theory concept. An accompanying CD plays each example and can be used at the lesson or at home. Dance Preludes for Piano Duet. Timothy Brown, edited by Phyllis Lehrer. $7.50. This advanced duet is from the FJH Contemporary Keyboard Editions series, designed for pianists with an interest in music of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. It gives pianists an opportunity to explore exciting rhythms, varied tempos, mixed meters and modal melodies - everything you would expect from modern music. The work takes its inspiration from Polish folk songs and, in particular, from the Dance Preludes for Clarinet and Piano, by Witold Lutuslawski. New sheet music solos include:The Little Red Caboose by Mary Leaf. Early Elementary The Butterfly by Nancy Lau. Elementary The Autumn Song by Kevin and Julia Olson. Late Elementary Clown Rag by Kevin Costley. Intermediate

Secretary: (Joanna Grace) read the minutes of the Sept. board meeting. They were approved as read with minor corrections.
Annual Fall Workshop: Gloria Chuang will present a report at a future meeting. Discussion ensued as to the terrific program by Dr. Andrew Hisey and the concern of the low attendance and lack of Publicity Chair to help publicize MAPTA events outside of MAPTA.
Programs: (Karen Boe) The next general meeting is Feb. 9 (see directory and Nuances for more details).
Performers Supporting Performers: (Ruth Heinecke) The next meeting will take place on Friday Nov. 20 at 10 am the home of Patty Ladpli
Exploring Music Resources: David Karbler from Ward-Brodt is the new EMR Chair!
Nuances: (Grant Billings) Grant presented the revised advertising policy. Those present approved the policy with minor changes. Grant also presented some options for a MAPTA recording/ picture taking policy. No consensus could be made at this meeting. Discussion will follow at the next board meeting. The MAPTA logo was corrected.
Website: (Ben Garber) We currently pay $40/ month for maintenance and hosting of the MAPTA website. Ben proposed to investigate other website options to include a more functional, updated site with local access to make changes and updates. Those present speculated on how MAPTA and the public could benefit from a revised website and internet presence. Concern about MAPTA directory privacy was presented and discussed in regard to password protected parts of the website. The possibility was raised to not have directory information on the site and to maintain a Facebook forum for MAPTA members, thus removing the need for password protected parts of the site. Committee Chairs would need to know that their email addresses are on the web. Ben will present new website options with financial proposals at the January board meeting.
Publicity: (No Chair)
Referral: (Linda Johnson) no report
Honors Recital: (Patty Ladpli and Shu-Ching Chuang) The recital date has been changed to Sunday, March 14.
Young Artist Recitals: (Renee Farley and Brian Hagen) The September recital featured 12 students from 5 teachers and the October recital featured 10 students from 4 teachers. There is often a high enrollment for December requiring two recitals.
Piano Play Together: (Diane Madsen and Jeanne Felix) Robert Vandall's commissioned piece for MAPTA is completed and paid for. The title for the level 4 piece that will open the concert has not yet been titled. It is expected that the piece will be published by the month of June. Ten pianos will be needed for this year's event. MAPTA has received a large amount of duet music from Alfred at no charge!
Piano Composition Festival: (Shad Wenzlaff) Shad is working on grant writing for sponsorship for the 2010 festival.
Professional Goals: (Anita Schulz) The bylaws were approved at the Nov. 10 general meeting. Anita sends a thank you to all who worked on this document. The next meeting at 9 am on Dec. 1 at Ward-Brodt will feature discussion and re-working of the duties for each committee. Joanna will continue to coordinate Panera donated goods for meetings.
Membership: (Denise Taylor) Denise reported that there are 92 members: 71 active, 7 associate, 3 institutional, 2 students, and 9 honorary lifetime members. The revised by-laws do not include a student category for membership in upcoming years.
Treasurer: (June Zeeh) June is writing a letter to cancel the Yellow Pages ad for next year. The Yellow Pages come out in February. Grant will investigate if the current referral number can be transferred to a Tracfone. In the meantime, MAPTA will keep the current phone number and phone plan. The reimbursement forms for MAPTA committee expenses are available on Office Live. June is willing to email forms to those board members that email her a request. June must receive the reimbursement form and related receipts before issuing reimbursement. Details of the treasury report presented at this meeting will not be published in the minutes, however, MAPTA members may contact June for a copy of the report.
Other Business: Debbie Yee and Grant Billings have discussed the creation of a digital survey to find out more what current members need and want from MAPTA and how MAPTA is or may not be serving their interests.
The next meeting will be held on January 12 at 8:30 am at Farley's House of Pianos. The meeting adjourned at 10:25 am. |

Free Pedals, Pipes & Pizza - March 20th submitted by John Krueger |
The Madison Chapter of the American Guild of Organists/Association of Church Musicians is presenting a program to introduce young people ages 11-16 to the organ; it is Pedals, Pipes & Pizza. As leading piano teachers in the community, we hope that you might be interested in encouraging some of your piano students to attend. We will explain and demonstrate the pipe organ. The students will also see the inside of an organ and have an opportunity to play a piano piece on it.
Please note the principal purpose of the day is to help students learn about the pipe organ and how it functions. The primary interest is not in recruitment of students for immediate organ study. If there happen to be students who would like to start organ lessons, we would strongly recommend they continue piano study while studying the organ.
The Pedals, Pipes & Pizza event will begin at Lutheran Church of the Living Christ, 110 North Gammon Road, Madison, and will last from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 20. We will also visit Resurrection Chapel at Oakwood Village West and Covenant Presbyterian Church, both near Mineral Point Road.
The event is free and will include a pizza lunch. If you have students whom you feel would be interested in attending this introduction to the organ, please send me their contact information. We will then contact the students and their parents.
Thank you for your consideration of this request as well as your cooperation. Please feel free to contact me if you need additional information.
Sincerely, John R. Krueger, Coordinator: Pedals, Pipes & Pizza 422 Maple Avenue, Madison, WI 53704-5841 608-249-0679
