Attitude

Article By Joe Anselmo, Co-Owner and CEO of Turning Point Real Estate

Hanging over the monthly production board in the workroom of the real estate company I used to own was a banner. It read "Attitude...it's the little thing that makes a big difference". I think it safe to say that most of us have heard plenty about the role attitude plays in life.

Interestingly, there are many definitions for "attitude" but personally, I describe it as a person's outlook on life. People generally either have a positive attitude (outlook) or a negative attitude (outlook).

When I was in the 8th grade I got into lots of trouble at school. Times were very different then. I was held in the principles office long after school was dismissed until my father picked me up on his way home from work. I remember most, not the strict punishment I received, but what my parents said to me; "you have a terrible attitude".  And I did. Once I accepted that fact, and decided to change my attitude, my life instantly improved (In all fairness, this did not happen in the 8th grade but many years later).

Attitude isn't really something that can be taught. It's something we learn over time by emulating both the positive and negative characteristics of others we observe. Over time, I've become much more aware of the relationship between my attitude and the attitude of the people whose example I want to follow...people that really influence my thoughts and actions.

One of these people is my Mother, Shirley Anselmo.

Yesterday was my mother's birthday. I know women don't like to share their age, so I'll just say that my Mom celebrated the 47th anniversary of her 29th birthday.  But you'd never know it.

I am continuously reminded by friends and relatives how incredible my Mom is. They'll say "your Mom's so great! She's got so much energy". Well, you don't need to tell me. I am one of seven children. I have 5 wonderful sisters and a great brother. Now that we're grown and parents of our own, we all marvel at how Mom, with the help of Dad, was able to raise such a large family. Aside from the fact that it was hard work, I realize more then ever, it had a lot to do with her attitude.

But while we have a terrific family, like all of us, my Mom has had her fair share of struggles, hardships and losses in her life. But it has been in those times that I have been inspired by her resilient attitude. Mom might not realize how much her attitude has influenced other around her but I can assure you it has. Through her volunteering efforts at her church, visiting the elderly, driving a blind women to the store occasionally or never missing a birthday or special event in our huge extended family, her words and actions have had a remarkable impact on the lives of those who know her.

I feel blessed to have such a wonderful mother. I saw this quote and was reminded of her, but I think it's a good question for all of us...

Attitudes are contagious.  Are yours worth catching?  ~Dennis and Wendy Mannering

Happy Birthday Mom! I love you.

Welcome "Twenty-Eleven"

Article By Melissa Kinna, Director of Creative Marketing & Technology with Turning Point Real Estate

This week we welcome the year "Twenty-Eleven", known in the Gregorian calendar as the 2011th year of the Common Era as well as the 11th year of the third millennium and of the 21st century; and the first year of the 201st decade.  Wow, right?

So, you might wonder what that information has to do with this week's article.  Well, as mentioned last week many of us take this time of the year to make resolutions, start anew, or pull away from bad habits.  And, since those resolutions are still fresh in your mind, there is no better time than now to go over your very first goal of the New Year.  This is a goal that some of you can easily knock off your list, however for others it may take some time, but hopefully by the end of the year you will be ready.

Now that I have you sitting on the edge of your seats, here it is . . . you need it . . . you will love it . . . and IT IS TIME!

Microsoft Office 2007 or 2010

That's right, Microsoft Office 2003 is out . . . it is old . . . and I encourage you to move on to NEW. Hey, it is 2011 and time for a new approach and here is why:

The good: Microsoft Office 2007 adds live previews of font and image styles; better displays complex features such as those for references and mass mailing; introduces new picture-editing tools, smaller file formats; improves document security; and integrates with other Office applications.

The bad: Word 2007 moves all of its commands, so there will be a learning curve when exploring; for instance, the Office Button at the top left of the screen holds many favorite features from 2003.

The bottom line: If you're ready to let go of old habits from previous versions of Office and want to make sleeker-looking documents, Microsoft Office 2007 is worth the upgrade and since the release of Microsoft Office 2010 this summer, you may find Office 2007 at a discount.

Now for those of you currently working with Office 2007 and are interested in updating to the 2010 version, take a moment to watch the short video below on the differences between the two to see if you are ready for the upgrade.
