Hanging over the monthly production board in the workroom of the real estate company I used to own was a banner. It read "Attitude...it's the little thing that makes a big difference". I think it safe to say that most of us have heard plenty about the role attitude plays in life.
Interestingly, there are many definitions for "attitude" but personally, I describe it as a person's outlook on life. People generally either have a positive attitude (outlook) or a negative attitude (outlook).
When I was in the 8th grade I got into lots of trouble at school. Times were very different then. I was held in the principles office long after school was dismissed until my father picked me up on his way home from work. I remember most, not the strict punishment I received, but what my parents said to me; "you have a terrible attitude". And I did. Once I accepted that fact, and decided to change my attitude, my life instantly improved (In all fairness, this did not happen in the 8th grade but many years later).
Attitude isn't really something that can be taught. It's something we learn over time by emulating both the positive and negative characteristics of others we observe. Over time, I've become much more aware of the relationship between my attitude and the attitude of the people whose example I want to follow...people that really influence my thoughts and actions.
One of these people is my Mother, Shirley Anselmo.
Yesterday was my mother's birthday. I know women don't like to share their age, so I'll just say that my Mom celebrated the 47th anniversary of her 29th birthday. But you'd never know it.
I am continuously reminded by friends and relatives how incredible my Mom is. They'll say "your Mom's so great! She's got so much energy". Well, you don't need to tell me. I am one of seven children. I have 5 wonderful sisters and a great brother. Now that we're grown and parents of our own, we all marvel at how Mom, with the help of Dad, was able to raise such a large family. Aside from the fact that it was hard work, I realize more then ever, it had a lot to do with her attitude.
But while we have a terrific family, like all of us, my Mom has had her fair share of struggles, hardships and losses in her life. But it has been in those times that I have been inspired by her resilient attitude. Mom might not realize how much her attitude has influenced other around her but I can assure you it has. Through her volunteering efforts at her church, visiting the elderly, driving a blind women to the store occasionally or never missing a birthday or special event in our huge extended family, her words and actions have had a remarkable impact on the lives of those who know her.
I feel blessed to have such a wonderful mother. I saw this quote and was reminded of her, but I think it's a good question for all of us...
Attitudes are contagious. Are yours worth catching? ~Dennis and Wendy Mannering
Happy Birthday Mom! I love you.
