If you are like most of us, the New Year is a time for making resolutions and setting goals. We start with the best of intentions, but we seldom execute or accomplish what we started. We buy exercise machines or join gyms, we swear off over indulgence, but in two months we are back into our old habits. The following year we hope for different results using the same strategy or tactic that didn't work the previous year.
Over the course of many failures, I have learned a few tricks that have helped me with the follow through on my goals and resolutions. I call it "How to be Smarter" goals. It is a written system that creates accountability, for the purpose of providing a better quality of life.
At last week's Commercial Training Session I pitched this as the "Turning Point 2011 Initiative" and received a very positive response from all in attendance. You can use these tips for your personal life, your business, or organization. Pick a notable date such as your Birthday or New Years Day to set your goals. This will make it easy to remember each year. Before we get started on this exercise, let's get some basic disciplines committed to our daily routines. You need to do these to realize maximum efficiency.
Productivity and Organization
Make lists. On a daily basis I make a list of what I want to accomplish that day. I have done this for 30 years. What I don't get accomplished; I move to the top of the list on the next day and place it as my "first priority". I write lists for daily, weekly, monthly, and annual goals. My annual goals also include a master list of that I want to accomplish in life on a grand scale (the modified version of the "bucket list") which I will cover in another MOJO article.
Get Organized
I have a bad habit of keeping old things which I never utilize. Get rid of the junk on a regular basis. If you don't use it within a specified time, discard it. Clutter affects you in a negative way and it creates more clutter, allowing you to become easily distracted and overwhelmed.
Complete a Task in order to accomplish a Project
I remember when I was younger; I was good at completing a single task but procrastinated when faced with a major project. A task is a component of a project. Every project needs to be broken down into smaller, prioritized, written tasks. When you do this, you will move through a project faster with less mental anguish. It's a great way to complete a project on time.
Modify your Strategy not your Goal...No Excuses
If you don't have the resources necessary to meet your desired goal, modify your strategy don't abandon your goal. When I was fresh out of College, I wanted to remain fit but I could not afford to join a gym. Instead, I walked and I biked. I received the same outcome utilizing a different strategy.
Once you have some of these basics committed to habit, you can begin creating and executing the "How to be Smarter" program. I have attached two sheets for you to utilize with your resolutions and goals. Click Here for some simple guidelines.
Thanks to all our Friends, Clients, Agents, and Supporters over the past year. We wish all a joyous year in 2011. Wait until you see what we have in store for next year. Charlie Seymour
