Versatility and Dependability of Yama Seiki has Harbec Feeling Good About Purchase

Harbec Plastics, located in Ontario, NY, describes themselves as "a continually growing and profitable leader in the manufacturing of prototypes, highly-toleranced tooling, machined components, and quality injection-molded parts." Being in business for over 30 years, it is clear that they have fulfilled this self description. However, a manufacturing company is only as good as the machines they have in their facility. When Harbec needed a turning center, they did their research to determine which was the best choice in the market, and the decision was easy.
Harbec purchased a Yama Seiki GS-260Y from OptiPro earlier this year and the machine's performance has exceeded their expectations, especially for its size. Says machine operator Dan Sherrell, "I've been very satisfied with the machine's speed and accuracy, especially when taking into consideration its size."
Dependability has not been an issue for Harbec, which is obviously a crucial factor in determining the quality of a machine. "They are a well-built and sturdy machine. We have not experienced any malfunctions, glitches, or any other issues with the machine," says Dan Sherrell.
Another aspect of the machine that Harbec has been very pleased with is its versatility. Says Joe Bechtold, Manager of Molds and Production, "Because of its C and Y axis, we have taken a job that would normally be one lathe operation and two-to-several secondary milling operations and performing them complete on the Yama Seiki, saving several hours of machine setup and cycle time. Some of the jobs that we get involve very complex parts, so having this machine in our facility is ultimately making our life easier."
So just how satisfied with the Yama Seiki machine is Harbec? When asked whether they would buy another one, Joe Bechtold replied, "We're already in the process of buying our second one."

IMTS 2010 A Success for OptiPro's OEM's

IMTS 2010 went down as the 8th largest in the 28-event history of the trade show. A total of 1,728 companies from 30 countries filled 1,180 booths. 82,411 attendees from more than 100 countries attended IMTS 2010 to see and buy the equipment, tooling, and services they will need to gain a competitive edge in their industry.
The success that OptiPro OEM's had from showcasing their machines at IMTS reflects the large amount of traffic at the trade show. Yama Seiki USA, a producer of CNC turning and machining centers of various sizes, sold every machine on display in their booth at IMTS.
Spinner, a family-owned and operated business since 1949 that specializes in building machines known for precision and accuracy, also saw the investment of reserving a booth at IMTS pay off. MacHill Machinery Solutions is in charge of sales and service of these fine machines in the U.S. Lois Hill of MacHill Machinery noticed a major impact from IMTS, specifically regarding the influence that IMTS had on their continuing efforts to make Spinner more well-known in the US market. "We generated a great number of leads and answered questions regarding our products. These inquiries were from the USA, Canada, Mexico, and indeed worldwide as IMTS is a major show for the machine tool industry. We noticed a strong interest in automation, 5-Axis machining, and machining centers that perform multiple tasks. This makes us believe that, going forward, demand will be stronger in the US market for Spinner machines as opposed to "commodity" type products."
OptiPro is the authorized distributor for Yama Seiki and Spinner for New York State. For more information and to request a quote for one of these machines, contact Pat Bechtold at 585-265-0160 or send emails to pbechtold@optipro.com.

Government Passes Act That Will Increase and Extend Benefits of Section 179 through 2011
The Section 179 tax deduction, which has allowed businesses to deduct the full purchase price of qualifying equipment purchased or financed during the tax year, has been extended through 2011. Additionally, benefits of Section 179 were made even bigger. Among the changes of Section 179 in the Small Business Jobs and Credit Act of 2010 passed on September 27th are the following:
  • An increase of the total amount available for deduction to $500,000 (up from $250,000)
  • An increase of the total amount of equipment purchased to $2 million (up from $800,000)
  • 50% bonus depreciation extended to tax year 2010 (it was rescinded earlier this year but has been restored.)
What does all of this mean for businesses? Simply put, if your company purchased at least $500,000 in equipment in 2010, you can reduce the total equipment cost by the tax deductions under Section 179. See the chart below as an example:
