Tech Tip: Angled Tools for Angled Grooves
An interesting case was recently reported to Mastercam where a custom Lathe tool was drawn and angled to fit an angled groove, but the user could not get the tool to cut the groove properly.
Angled tools for angled grooves
When a custom Lathe tool needs to be at an angle, define it oriented straight, not at an angle. Then, use the Setup Tool > Tool Angle settings to define the angle.
Define the angle
Follow this outline:
  1. Display the tool geometry level or open the file with the tool profile geometry.
  2. Draw the tool so the flat face aligns with the X axis and the tip is at the origin:

Tech Tip: Guidelines for Custom Tool Diameter
There seems to be some confusion about custom tools and custom tool profiles - specifically, about whether the profile needs to be drawn to the exact tool diameter, or whether the diameter needs to be specified in the tool definition. We hope these guidelines will help.
There are two types of custom tools. The first type is when you are using one of the standard predefined tool types (for example, end mill or bull nose), but you want to use a custom tool profile. In this case, there are two ways to specify the tool diameter in the tool definition:
  • If the tool profile is drawn to the actual size of the tool, set the Diameter to 10.0 for metric tool definitions or 1.0 for inch tool definitions.
Guidelines for custom tool diameter
  • If the tool profile defines a 1-unit tool, the tool diameter can be set to any value and the tool will be adjusted.
The second type of custom tool is based on the Undefined tool type.

In this case, the tool profile must be drawn to the exact size of the tool. In addition, the proper size must be specified in the tool definition.
