Integrated Flying Bridge Feature Makes Flow Waterjets Elite, Says Glass Fab, Inc.
Glass Fab, Inc.
Glass Fab, Inc. is a local company stationed in Rochester, NY that specializes in providing fabricated parts made of various optical materials to customers with stringent specifications. When Glass Fab was looking to purchase a waterjet to help improve their operations, they did a lot a research to determine which one was best for the company. Chris Wingate, who does everything from programming to machine operating for Glass Fab, described why they purchased a Flow and the reason they are impressed with it. "What we liked about the Flow is the Integrated Flying Bridge where everything is overhead. On some of your waterjets, including the one we had previously, your rails and your linear ball screws run down the sides of the machine with covers on them. A waterjet can be a very messy machine and since all the sand and water flush over the sides, we were constantly changing ball screws, bearings and other things that were susceptible to the sand and water. Even though the covers were on there, the water and sand would still get in there. With the Flow we purchased, everything's above, so we don't have that problem." Whenever Glass Fab is making fixtures in-house out of aluminum or steel and they need to cut it down or shape it, they do it on the Flow Waterjet. "It's a very versatile machine, you can cut anything on it. It's faster, quicker, easier, and more efficient to make fixtures on this machine," says Chris. The Flow Waterjet is also providing Glass Fab with precision and accuracy when fabricating parts out of optical materials according to customers' strict standards. Speed is not being sacrificed when achieving precision either. "The Flow is absolutely giving us the precision we need and it's making some of our processes faster too. It's helping us save money."

OptiPro Systems OptiPro Receives Great Response from Attendees of 2010 Winter SBIR Meeting
Winter Navy-Army SBIR Review Meeting (Compliments of CeraNova)

On Tuesday January 12th OptiPro hosted its Winter Navy-Army SBIR Review meeting. The review, which took place in Rochester, NY, featured presentations from 10 organizations and approximately 70 participants representing 22 organizations from across the U.S.

In the morning session, nine invited speakers gave presentations on the design, manufacturing, and metrology of Hemispherical/Ogive Missile Domes and Freeform Optics.

Dan Harris, our Navy technical advisor, made the following remarks, "The Navy-Army SBIR program on optical fabrication technology development for conformal optics and aerodynamic domes has reached a level of maturity and a critical mass such that it is attracting substantial interest from the optics community and potential end users. The program is developing technologies to manufacture windows, domes, and lenses with previously unattainable shapes that will enable radically new designs for optical systems."

Brian Jones, our Army advisor, agreed and said "the meeting surpassed all my expectations from the amount of interest in advancing the art of precision optical manufacturing to the number of companies/universities willing to share information. This is certainly an impressive group working toward a common goal."

In the afternoon session, nine individual presentations were given by OptiPro personnel including various topics on High Speed Hemispherical Dome Processing, Metrology,UltraForm Finishing, and Deterministic Micro-Grinding.

The meeting wrapped up with a "Live Demo Happy Hour" at OptiPro where everyone enjoyed a great opportunity to see our machines in action and to network with other attendees.
