Artists of the Gallows Run

Art for Conservation

On Sunday, November 6th, the Gallows Run Watershed Association, Heritage Conservancy, Nockamixon Open Space Committee and Palisades School District partnered for "Artists of the Gallows Run - Art for Conservation 2011."

Owners of preserved properties in the Gallows Run Watershed invited

artists to visit and create an aesthetic response in their medium to the unique landscape that makes this area of Upper Bucks so special. The artwork was then showcased at the Artists of the Gallows Run - Art for Conservation 2011 fundraiser, where proceeds benefitted land conservation and environmental education in the Gallows Run watershed. Over $8,000 was raised at the event.

"The Gallows Run Watershed has an array of scenic landscapes ranging from pastoral views to steep wooded ravines," said Laura Baird, Resource Protection Specialist at Heritage Conservancy. "It's been a pleasure working with the Gallows Run Watershed Association, Nockamixon Township and Durham Township to preserve portions of this beautiful countryside. The conservation of this watershed ensures that there will always be a scenic natural area to foster artist inspiration for future generations to enjoy."

After the initial opening exhibit on November 6th at the barn at Rising Sun Farm, the artworks were moved to the Gallery at Palisades High School and will be exhibited from November 8th to December 12th with a gallery opening on November 16th at 6:00pm. Gallery hours at Palisades High School are: Monday, 12:30pm to 3:00pm; Wednesday, 9:30am to 11:30am; Friday, 9:30am to 11:30am.

Heritage Conservancy Receives Grant from Visit Bucks County

Recently, Heritage Conservancy received a grant from Visit Bucks County (VBC) to help preserve historic structures on the 18th century Tuckamony Farm property. The VBC Tourism Grant was instituted in 2008 to assist in the development and enhancement of not-for-profit tourist destinations in Bucks County. VBC recognizes that many tourists visit Bucks County to experience the region's historic landmarks and natural open spaces.

Located at 6320 Upper York Road in New Hope, PA, Tuckamony Farm is one of the oldest family-run Christmas tree farms in the country. In 1925, Forrest and Irene Crooks purchased the property and planted evergreen seedlings in 1929. They began selling Christmas trees to the public in 1934.

Part of The Honey Hollow Watershed, Tuckamony Farm is one of five farms totaling about 650 acres in Solebury Township. The farm specializes in choose-and-cut trees. They also provide pre-cut trees, fresh holly from the orchard, and hand-made wreaths. The Crooks named their farm in honor of one of the last Lenni Lenape Native Americans to live in this area, Peg Tuckamony. She wove hickory baskets and traded with the colonists until her death in 1830.

Honoring the Historic Heritage of Susquehanna County

Heritage Conservancy was retained by the Endless Mountains Heritage Region to have the Susquehanna County Seat of Montrose listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The project has been completed successfully. Jeffrey L. Marshall, Chief Preservation Officer, spoke at the Susquehanna County Historical Society and Free Library Association's Annual Meeting, where he discussed the historic designation. The photo shows Mr. Marshall and attendees reviewing the historic district maps.

Hilary Caws-Elwitt, Susquehanna County Systems & Public Services Librarian, commented that Mr. Marshall's speech motivated many people to appreciate Susquehanna County's architectural heritage and look at some of the county's historic buildings with new eyes.

Celebrate the Season at Historic Aldie Mansion

A message from our Chief Operating Officer

For over fifty years, our mission has been to protect and preserve the natural and historic heritage of this region. At 85 Old Dublin Pike in Doylestown, PA, historic Aldie Mansion is a fitting home for Heritage Conservancy.

Aldie Mansion awaits its honored guests

Historic buildings and structures, like the mansion, help define our culture and heritage. They add character to our surroundings, create sustainable and vibrant places to live, and add to this area's intrinsic feeling of belonging and permanence.

Aldie Mansion is a wonderful example of an ongoing historic preservation project. Its story is rich with history, and its survival is the result of a community preservation effort. For the very first time in our organization's history, proceeds donated to Heritage Conservancy at this year's Christmas for Aldie fundraiser will go directly into the upkeep and ongoing renovations of the mansion. Thus, we've changed the name of our annual event from Christmas at Aldie to Christmas for Aldie. The event will take place on Sunday, December 4th from 5:00PM to 8:00PM.
