Did You Know??
The United Nations has declared 2011 - 2012 the "International Year of the Bat."
Heritage Conservancy has been increasingly involved in initiatives that address the rampant spread of a fungus known as White Nose Syndrome, which has caused the death of millions of bats in the last 4 to 5 years.
Bats are essential to our environment because they eat harmful insects and are part of a delicate ecological balance in nature... so don't let them spook you this Halloween!

Pet Cemetery at Aldie Mansion
William and Martha Mercer were very fond of their pets. As part of the original estate, this pet cemetery predates the mansion and includes dogs of a variety of breeds, parrots, cats, and horses, which belonged to the Mercer family throughout the years.
Meet Gourdie, the Heritage Conservancy Scarecrow! Earlier this month, during Heritage Conservancy's annual "Staff Day," the Conservancy's staff of twenty-five divided into two teams for a competition. The teams Out of Our Gourds and Squashbucklers went head to head in a challenge to create a four-course meal that incorporated the secret ingredient (squash!) and included as much locally sourced food as possible. Each team created a scarecrow that was to illustrate the Conservany's mission of "preserving our land and historic heritage." Members of the board and volunteers served as judges. Come say hello and look for the winning team's scarecrow at Autumn Alive in downtown Quakertown this Saturday, October 22nd!

 Risotto Stuffed Jack-be-littles
5 Jack-be-little pumpkins, tops cut off and cleaned 1/4c brown sugar 16oz Arborio rice 1 plus quart chicken stock 1 pint shitake mushrooms, sliced thin 4 cloves garlic, minced 2 medium shallots, small dice 2c white wine 1c grated parmesan cheese 1 Stick Butter Salt and Pepper to taste Micro greens and extra cheese for garnish
Sprinkle inside of pumpkins with brown sugar, and split 4 tablespoons of butter evenly between the 5 pumpkins. Bake for about 30 minutes at 400 degrees, or until fork tender. In large sauce pot, melt remaining butter, and add garlic and onion. Cook until onion is translucent, then add mushrooms. Once mushrooms are wilted, stir in rice. Toast rice in pan over medium heat until all the rice is evenly coated with butter. (Approx. 5 minutes, constantly stirring.) Add in wine and 1 cup of stock. Stir constantly until liquid is absorbed. Continue stirring and adding in stock 1 cup at a time until rice is cooked. Turn off heat and stir in Parmesan cheese. Add salt and pepper to taste. Stuff cooled pumpkins with the risotto, sprinkle cheese on top and bake in oven for an additional 10 minutes or until tops are golden brown. Top with micro greens to serve.

Heritage Conservancy Receives Funding to Educate Students about the Bristol Marsh
Over the past five years, Heritage Conservancy has been working as a local partner to The Nature Conservancy to promote the ecological restoration and stewardship of the Bristol Marsh Preserve, located in Bristol Borough in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The site is located along the main stem of the Delaware River and includes a freshwater tidal marsh, floodplain, upland forests, and Otter Creek.

Recently, Heritage Conservancy received notification of grant funding to support its continued stewardship and educational programs at the site. These grants, one from the PA DEP's Coastal Zone Management Program and the other via the TD Charitable Foundation, will help expand our "Developing Future Stewards of the Bristol Marsh" program for middle school science students in Bristol Borough and Bristol Township. Working with our partners from the two school districts, Silver Lake Nature Center and Bucks County Conservation District, the funding will go towards in-class and on-site educational programs designed to highlight this unique tidal wetland environment in Pennsylvania.

Transition at Heritage Conservancy
After many years with Heritage Conservancy, Clifford C. David Jr. has decided to pursue his passion for land conservation through new pathways.
For over 50 years, the Conservancy has enhanced the quality of life for our residents in Pennsylvania and northern New Jersey through its mission of preserving natural and historic heritage. We look forward to continuing to help these regions enrich their communities. The geographic impact of the organization from a local land trust to a multi-state organization has resulted in national recognition of its programs such as "Lasting Landscapes®", a land and community focused initiative whose concepts have been adopted by state and national organizations. We were one of the first 39 land trusts nationally to receive certification from the Land Trust Alliance's accreditation commission, the national organization that now certifies land trusts.
On behalf of William Hart Rufe III, chairman of the board during Mr. David's tenure, and Marvin L. Woodall, the newly elected chairman, the Board of Directors extend their best wishes to Mr. David as he enters this new phase of his career. If you wish to contact Mr. David, please call Heritage Conservancy's Chief Preservation Officer, Jeffrey L. Marshall, at (215) 345-7020 ext. 113.

Glaxo Smith Kline Donates TIME to Heritage Conservancy
On October 6th, a group of 26 volunteers from Glaxo Smith Kline headed to the Quakertown Swamp to work with Heritage Conservancy on one of our Lasting Landscapes®. Located in Upper Bucks County, PA, Quakertown Swamp is a 518-acre wetland which is recognized as significant by the Pennsylvania Natural Diversity Inventory because it is a haven for a variety of wildlife species, including beaver and waterfowl. Quakertown swamp has been listed as a first priority site in the Bucks County Natural Areas Inventory (NAI) and is listed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as an all-important wetland area.
Throughout the day, volunteers from Glaxo Smith Kline helped remove over 150 invasive plants as one of the first stages in the stewardship plan for the swamp. Thanks volunteers! Click HERE to see more photos of volunteers in our photo album on Facebook! Have you heard? We're Building a Trail for YOU!
We're building a ¾-mile walking trail at Quakertown Swamp! While hiking the new trail, you may meander through a meadow of colorful wildflowers, experience the peacefulness of the forested swamp, and see or hear some of the 92 bird species that call the area home. Make this the trail that YOU helped build for your community. One foot is just $5! Support the trail. Go for a hike. Experience nature.
Make an online donation HERE or call Maggie Uliano at (215) 345-7020 ext. 107.
