Showcase of local artists to raise funds for open space conservation

We're pleased to announce Artists of the Gallows Run -- Art for Conservation project, an event that will showcase protected land via local artists and raise awareness and funds for Gallows Run open space initiative.

With support from the Erwin J. and Gertrude K. Neusch Fund and in cooperation with the Gallows Run Watershed Association, the Conservancy will host an exhibit of local artists and invite the public to view and purchase their works at a special reception on Sunday, November 22 from 5 to 8 PM at the Ferndale Inn in Ferndale, PA.

In a variety of mediums, including watercolor, oil, charcoal, photography and sculpture, each artist will interpret a regional viewscape to create a one-of-a-kind work of art. The reception will feature wine and cheese, along with music and special raffles.

The paintings will then be exhibited for two months at the Palisades High School Community Gallery, with an opening the second week of December.

Fifty-percent of the art sales proceeds will fund land conservation efforts.

Award-Winning Actress Meryl Streep Visits Aldie Mansion and "Forks of the Neshaminy" Lasting Landscape®

Legendary film icon Meryl Streep visited Heritage Conservancy's preserved Aldie Mansion headquarters and its Forks of the Neshaminy Lasting Landscape® to film a segment of Faces of America, a four-part PBS special that will air in 2010.

Presented and written by Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., one of the nation's pre-eminent African-American scholars, the highly anticipated show will provide a unique understanding of American identity and history by helping people find long-buried details of their recent and distant ancestries and restoring the branches of their individual family trees.

As part of the series, Jeff Marshall, a noted Bucks County historian and author of Barns of Bucks County and the new Farmhouses of Bucks County, took Ms.Streep on a half-day tour of areas and properties that have been in her family lineage -- including the land that was occupied by her grandparents, which has been preserved by Heritage Conservancy as part of its Forks of the Neshaminy Lasting Landscape®.

"Thanks to the Conservancy, this special property will remain preserved for generations to come," said the award-winning actress.

Lasting Landscapes®: An Effective Strategy for Countering Urban Sprawl

A Letter from Cliff David, President of Heritage Conservancy

As President of Heritage Conservancy, I've witnessed first-hand the rapid development of the southeastern area of Pennsylvania. I am grateful to the founders of our organization, who 50+ years ago realized the need for professional land use planning and conservation-based design. Regional planning, an effective tool to prevent urban sprawl, is one of the most important ways of balancing sustainable growth with protecting our open spaces and vital natural resources. Throughout our organization's history we have had to develop innovative land conservation and historic preservation strategies to preserve our natural and historic heritage. These strategies have proven successful. Despite the pressures of overdevelopment, our area has retained much of its beautiful view sheds of rolling hills, protected farmland, historic homes and a wonderful diversity of wildlife.

One of the main strategies that Heritage Conservancy has used successfully is our Lasting Landscapes® Initiative, as it unites open space protection and historic preservation at the "landscape level."
