United Way staff is currently matching local company volunteers with agency projects for United Way's Day of Caring held on Tuesday, May 12, 2009. Based on the number of current volunteers that will be participating, we are still in need of additional volunteer projects! You are invited to attend United Way of East Central Iowa's Volunteer Recognition Breakfast & Day of Caring Kick-off! Join the fun on Tuesday, May 12, 7:30-8:30 am at the Cedar Rapids Kernels Stadium as we recognize and thank the many volunteers who make a difference in our community. There will be a brief awards presentation, along with free breakfast, prizes and entertainment!

| Letter Carriers Food Drive |
|
On Saturday, May 9th, letter carriers and volunteers will collect food for our local community during the annual National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Food Drive. The NALC Food Drive occurs across the nation and has been significant in alleviating hunger in America. It is the largest one-day food drive in the Greater Cedar Rapids area.
You can participate by placing a bag of non-perishable food items (no glass items, please) by your mailbox on May 9th and it will be picked up by your letter carrier or a volunteer. You can also help out by volunteering to sort food into boxes at one of the drop site locations: St. Luke's Surgery Center parking lot, 1075 1st Avenue SE, or Hawkeye Area Community Action Program (HACAP). | United Way Welcomes New Staff Member |

United Way of East Central Iowa welcomes Abby Emmert as our new Resource Development Associate! Abby graduated from the University of Iowa in 2008 with a Bachelor's Degree in Communication Studies and a minor in Journalism/Mass Communications, and is excited to begin her career at United Way.
"The thing I enjoy most about working at United Way is being constantly surrounded by people who are doing good things," says Abby. "Whether it's here at United Way or out in the community, I've been impressed with everyone's desire for positive change."
Outside of the office, Abby helps coach an AAU girls basketball team, enjoys music and traveling to concerts around the area. She also likes trying out new restaurants and attending the Downtown Farmer's Market. |
