Greetings!
It has been a long time coming for news on your local IIBA® Chapter. And we have plenty of news to share. Below you will read about changes in our chapter from the board of directors and some changes this will bring to your chapter.

2012-13 Board of Directors

A lot has happened with the Seattle IIBA® Chapter since the last newsletter. Resignations and elections have brought a new leadership team to your chapter.

Keith Saddoris resigned as your chapter president in May. Past President, Leann Morgan, stepped up to the plate to provide leadership and continuity for the remainder of the term and aid in election and transition activities.

Nominees were announced in May. Thank you to those who personally reached out to potential board members to help fill all of the upcoming vacant spots. This little extra effort provided great value to the chapter.

Elections were held at our May Chapter meeting bringing the following people to your chapter leadership.

Vicki

Vicki James - President

Vicki has been a member of the Seattle IIBA® Chapter since 2010. She earned her CBAP© this same year. Vicki is also PMP© certified and has been providing business analysis and project management services for 13 years.

Dan Kruger - Vice President of Membership

Dan has been a member of the Seattle chapter since 2010. He is currently studying for his CBAP© and plans to take the exam in late 2012. Dan has been instrumental in spreading the word of the IIBA® in Olympia and specifically to BAs that work for the state of Washington. Dan has coordinated professional development events in Olympia working with the Information Processing Managers Association (IPMA). His proactive work in spreading the word of the IIBA® and benefits to members will be a valuable asset to the board.

John Clemmons - Vice President of Finance

John has more than 10-years experience as a Business Analyst.  He currently works as Senior Business Analyst in the Enterprise Program Office at T-Mobile. John has been involved with IIBA® since 2007 and became a CBAP in 2008. John is passionate about supporting the chapter and helping others earn their CBAP certifications.

Uma Singh - Vice President of Marketing and Communications

Uma has more than 10 years of experience as a Business Analyst, currently employed at T-Mobile as a Senior Business Analyst in the Enterprise Program Office. She became involved with IIBA® in 2011 after receiving her CBAP Certification. Uma looks forward to supporting and increasing the visibility of the Seattle IIBA chapter.

Cathie Groesbeck - Vice President of Special Programs

Cathie has been a member of the Seattle IIBA® Chapter since 2010. She currently works as a BA in the business and systems department at Symetra for 10 + years. Cathie's goal is to support chapter growth and encourage more members to actively participate within the chapter.

Leadership Notes
The Board met on August 4th to talk about the upcoming year of our chapter. I am excited to share results of our discussion.

Mission

  • Advance the role of Business Analysis as a recognized profession

Objectives

  • Support learning opportunities for Business Analysts to advance their skills through network with seasoned peer practitioners and industry leaders
  • Promote certification (CBAP® and CCBA®) and continuing education aligned to the IIBA "Business Analysis Body of Knowledge" (BABOK®)
  • Encourage and sustain membership growth and member participation throughout the state of Washington
  • Create corporate support by demonstrating the value of Business Analysis and the IIBA®
Board Principles
  • Each board member is the owner of their own domain
  • The board will be able to operate seamlessly in the event of a board member is unavailable. This is accomplished by a shared understanding of duties, documenting processes, and cross training.
  • We evangelize Business Analysis and the IIBA®
  • We actively network at meetings so participants, new and previous, attendees
  • We recognize the need to spend money to make money
See the side bar for the top 10 initiatives we will be working toward in the coming months.

The Project Manager vs. the Business Analyst
I have a hard time deciding whether "versus" is a good word to compare the two roles. On one hand, the project manager and business analyst should be working collaboratively. On the other hand, the two roles do offer a healthy contest in project related decisions. The issue at hand is that there is a lot of uncertainty about the difference in these roles. The result of this uncertainty is cases where one person plays both roles without enough skills for each, and other cases where the team members do not know who is responsible for what. Hopefully, we can clear this up. Continue to article...
WA Business Analysis Development Day Postponed

We had a large group of volunteers working to host our first Washington Business Analysis Day from December until April. We accomplished a lot under the leadership of Keith Saddoris and Bob Ramsdell. Unfortunately, when April 1st rolled around we determined that we did not yet have a good feel for feasibility of pulling off an event for May 19, 2012 with the caliber we intended to make a mark on the Pacific Northwest for the IIBA® Seattle Chapter. The decision at that time was to postpone the event indefinitely. Keith further took action by proposing a motion to add a new board position of Vice President of Special Programs and Events to lead the next effort to bring a professional development day to Seattle. Cathie Groesbeck was elected to the position in May.

The full vision and strategy for this position or the event is yet to be fully defined. One valuable lesson we got from the previous effort is an understanding of just how big and complex planning a major event is. We will be taking extra time to make sure we have a full understanding of the effort, lead times needed for getting speakers and marketing to attendees, and alternatives to ensure the best use of resources for the best results. Stay tuned for more information.

Your Newsletter - Your News (Seeking a volunteer newsletter editor)

My apologies for being so long in getting my first newsletter out. Somehow, I wasn't quite prepared for this task of President.

I recently participated in a discussion about chapter newsletters where frequency of publishing was discussed. Our newsletter is published quarterly (well almost). What I am hearing is that best practice for the members is a monthly newsletter.

I see two huge advantages to a monthly publication; opportunity to promote events within the newsletter and keeping the Seattle IIBA® Chapter in front of membership more often. The drawback is the amount of work it takes to write, edit, and publish the newsletter on a monthly basis.

We are creating a non-board volunteer position for a Newsletter Editor. This will spread the work out and help create some accountability for meeting expected deadlines. It will provide an opportunity to engage members in our chapter administration.

The other thought is "does the newsletter need to be 6 plus pages long each time." I would expect some standard features continue in going to a monthly publication (e.g., letter from the President, upcoming events, the return of "Dear Julie" or comparable, IIBA® International news, and one learning article.)

This is your newsletter. I want to hear from you what currently makes this a valuable resource for you or what we can do to increase the value. Please email me at president@seattle.iiba.org with your ideas and suggestions. I would also be excited to hear from anybody that would like to volunteer in helping with the newsletter in an Editor position or other capacity.

Get your own byline. I welcome submissions from our members.

We hope you enjoyed this newsletter. Please send ideas for future editions, articles, or comments to president@seattle.iiba.org

Sincerely,

Vicki James, Chapter President
