Aloha Pet Ohana,
With Christmas just around the corner, the community is buzzing with holiday cheer and excitement as Christmas trees go up and presents are going under the tree. At PDP, the holidays can be a strong reminder of Oahu's needy families who are facing challenges during this economic time. Their pets and other homeless animals around the island continue to be in need of medical care and food. You can help PDP spread more holiday cheer to these beloved animals by organizing a Pet Food Drive that will enable us to help families and their pets this holiday season and throughout the new year. If you haven't yet purchased a Christmas gift for your special pet, consider getting them a PDP punee bed! The punee bed is an island tradition--perfect for afternoon naps or used as a guest bed. Our poi dogs and popoki deserve the best, so we provide them with punee beds to sleep on instead of the cold, hard concrete floor. PDP punee beds are soft, dry and keep pets off the floor. It's a great way for our animals to relax and reduce their stress. A limited number of beds are available for order -- you can find more information in the next section.
We are also in need of volunteer transportation on Sunday, December 19 where PDP will be hosting a sterilization clinic for pet owners in Ewa Beach. Volunteers are needed to help transport cats for surgery - up to 30 cats from three different properties in Kapolei, Kalihi and Kaneohe. If you have a truck or van and can assist that day, please email alicia@poidogsandpopoki.org.

HOST A PET FOOD DRIVE!!!!
Since organizing in November 2009, Poi Dogs & Popoki has collected and disseminated more than 50,000 pounds of pet food and supplies to needy families and their pets through the generosity of supporters, pet food manufacturers and retail stores.
During these tough economic times, families are forced to abandon and surrender their pets due to their inability to financially care for them. Animal shelters are full, foreclosures are rising and pet parents have to make tough, heart-breaking decisions they never thought they would have to make. We know that many people evicted from their homes will actually choose to live on the beach rather than give up their pets to animal control. The Hawaii Food Bank rarely provides pet food to their clients and food stamps cannot be used to purchase pet food.
PDP wants to make sure pets and their families are able to stay together. Dry and wet dog and cat food as well as other pet supplies like kitty litter, leashes, toys, beds and food bowls are always needed.
Help us help people and their pets this holiday season and throughout the year. Host a Pet Food Drive at your workplace, your church, your school, or in your community. All food and supplies collected are disseminated to homeless pets and families struggling to care for their pets. PDP Pet Updates
Five Kittens Rescued
Five kittens were recently pulled from a property in Ewa Beach that was overwhelmed with cats [See pictures below]. A compassionate couple started feeding the neighborhood strays and it quickly got out of control with more than 30 cats on the property and more on the way since none were previously sterilized. PDP worked with the couple to trap and sterilize all 30 cats, remove five kittens, and even remove the infected eye of one adult male.
Food For a Family
PDP sterilized 16 dogs living with a homeless family in a run-down shack in the back of Nanakula. After multiple litters, the family was struggling to care for 32 puppies - some which had already died. All the puppies were removed, sterilized and placed up for adoption. PDP drops off dog food once a month to ensure that the remaining pets receive proper nourishment.
