The Eleven Twelve Project

Volume #20
September 2010

Greetings!
Who is your example of a good friend?  Chuck has called me on special days, year after year, even when I didn't return his kindness.  Roy keeps in touch with people that have moved away.  He spends more time with them, than I do with my 'friends' around the corner.

Friendship and caring, and more importantly, the love that should motivate it, is our calling from God.  It is the same love that drove our Savior to the cross, and kept Him nailed upon it until His death.

In this issue of The Eleven Twelve Project, we're focusing on how Christians can become more loving and thereby more like Jesus.  May we all be someone's example of a good friend!

Sincerely,

Scott McIntyre

Encouragement Efforts #2
Believe it or not Christians can get discouraged.  Don't take my word on it though, read what happened to Paul.  Based on his story, I have to think that we can even give up wanting to share our faith.

To counteract that possibility, we started sharing 'Encouragement Efforts' in Volume 18 of this newsletter.  Here are three more things to think about, that God may use to spur you on toward love and the good deed of evangelism.
  1. In a culture that screams at us to earn everything we possess, God's grace arrives unexpectedly when we least deserve it and dramatically changes what it touches.  It is this very grace, a precious gift to believers all over the world, that does much more than save...it equips and empowers us to reach out to others.
  2. We do not have to be strong and persuasive Christians, full of wisdom and perfect in character, to get our friends to heaven.  We just need to know where to look for the power necessary to accomplish the task.  We will find that power in God!
  3. Just as our friends may sense our excitement about a long awaited vacation, our anticipation of a future in Christ might begin to seep out where they can see it.  And then it's only natural to share what we're excited about.  What are you looking forward to?
One more thing that could encourage you, and that's the rest of Paul's story.  If you don't know it by heart, take a look!

Showdown - Love vs. ????
What is the primary reason Christians don't share their faith more?  Could it be...
  • Other things seem more urgent
  • We don't know enough non-Christians
  • People won't be interested
Those are certainly real reasons but not the primary one, which I think is fear!  That's good news because if love and fear were slugging it out in the boxing ring for the heavyweight character trait of the world, love would win by a convincing knockout.

So what's our training tip for this issue?  Is it work harder to conquer  fear?  No...it's grow in love!  That's why we've created the Do the Two Project; to help Christians become more loving.  As we grow in love, the needs of those we are caring for will become more evident, and our hearts desire will be to meet whatever ones we can.

Christ purchased our salvation through love, and our evangelism efforts need to be rooted in the same motive.  Regardless of how you and I go about making love more demonstrable in our lives, may the world find it in ever increasing measure when they look at you and me.

We're conducting a poll via Facebook to confirm my suspicions about fear.  You can take it here if you have a Facebook account or send us an email with your answer to the question: Is fear the most common thing stopping Christians from evangelizing?

We are blessed!  The most perfect love of all, springing from the heart of God, bought us what we could never earn, and didn't deserve.  Through one supreme act of love, Jesus went to His death so that we wouldn't have to.

We won't be like Christ in our relations with friends and family, but we are called to move in the direction that He demonstrated for us on the cross.  And as we do, as we lay down a bit more of our lives for the people we love, evangelism will become more natural for us.

Why?  Because people who love, strive to meet the needs of the people they love, and we all know people who need the Savior.

Sincerely,

Scott McIntyre
