Dear ,
I may be the first to succumb to my first 2008 prediction, as I've come down with a terrible head cold on Friday that is refusing to let go, making our February newsletter and some of our Jam session promotions late in getting out. Of course, I'll slow down after Mobile World Congress, or perhaps OSiM, CTIA . . .
I had the opportunity to learn about some new Sun initiatives at the first MEDD (Mobile and Embedded Developer Days). I must admit that some of the talks were much too technical for me, but I always meet lots of interesting people and companies. Terrence Barr, Evangelist of the Java Mobile and Embedded Community wrote a great wrap up blog. The picture our panel at the end of Day 1, where we role-played a new developer trying to figure out how to get started. Bottom-line: tread carefully, there are a lot of paths.
There was a heavy push for the formation of a Developer Alliance, to collectively push back and give developers a voice; which included a separate meeting held the day after the conference. I think this is terrific, as my faithful readers know, WIP is a strong advocate for Developers and mentioned the formation of our own Developers Advisory Team in our December newsletter. We'll continue discussion with the folks who were there and keep you informed as to how we can all work together. Putting something like this together is no small task. Let me know if you have an interest in getting involved. We may get a meeting together at CTIA.
February is all about Mobile World Congress (formerly known as 3GSM) February 11-14 in Barcelona where WIP is involved in the following, let me know if you would like to meet:
· Sunday, Feb 10 - The Leadership Council for Developer Programs is meeting for dinner and continued discussion on our Charter. If you are a Developer Program and would like to attend, let me know.
· Monday, Feb 11- I'm delighted to again be the Master of Ceremonies for Mobile Monday's Peer Awards.
· Tuesday, Feb 12 - A WIP event - The first Mobile Jam Session and Reception, see the highlights below We are really jammed about this one!
· Tuesday, Feb 12 ACCESS Reception, 4:00pm - 7:00pm, ACCESS Hospitality Suite in the #CY06 (in main courtyard at the Fira)
· Wednesday, Feb 13 - Mobile-Distillery 'Booth Babe duty' (I couldn't resist this request! and I think their java porting engine is really cool) from 2:30pm - 4:30pm, Hall 2, 2F49

PS I'd also be remiss if I didn't give a big thank you to Mike Sigal and Andy Ambramson for once again including me in the private dinner the night before DEMO in Palm Desert. As a sideline to his PR firm, Andy more than dabbles in and thankfully shares his great wine collection. THANKS! |

| Mobile Jam Session - February 12 - Barcelona |
WIP and Rudy deWaele of dotOpen and m-trends.org have teamed up to produce what is going to be THE event during Mobile World Congress (aka 3GSM).
We wanted an event focused on developers - to hear what they have to say and to make it easier to make a connection which can be really difficult at big conferences like this.
Infused with the spirit of the early days of Jazz, the Mobile Jam Session is a day to inspire new ideas and innovate solutions to existing challenges. The purpose is focused, but the agenda is improvised along the way.
We listened to topic and speaker suggestions and designed accordingly:
· OPENING PANEL - on the state of the Mobile Ecosystem
· IMPROV SESSIONS - 5 topics for a deeper dive and better networking
· CLOSING ENCORE PANEL - with speakers rotated in from the floor for a true 'jam session'
Here's a preview of the Opening Panel
The Players:
· Daniel Appelquist, Senior Technology Strategist at Vodafone Group
· Carl Uminski, CTO, Trutap and formerly of Yahoo!
· Souheil Gallouzi, CTO, Intrinsyc and formerly of Qualcomm
· Terrence Barr, Technical Evangelist, SUN Microsystems
· Tom Libretto, VP of Forum Nokia
· Ray Anderson, CEO, Bango
IMPROV SESSIONS TOPICS
1. Mobile Web Development Frameworks - Widgets/Ajax etc
2. Mobile OS / Platforms
3. Usability / UI / Localization / Mobile Interfaces
4. Mobile media / Web Convergence
5. Open Source in Handsets
Featuring speakers from: Forum Nokia, ACCESS, SUN, Mobile-Distillery, WC3, UIQ, Idean and many more.
The Reception will be fun too as Rudy and Caroline choose their favorite jazz picks for a perfect cocktail sound!
Have you signed up yet? A few spots left - sign up here.
It's free thanks to our sponsors.
And check out some of the other companies attending including: Admob, Avaya, Bango, Bebo, Brand2Hand, Cellectica, Dell Mobile, GetJar, Kyte.tv, LemonQuest, Mippin, Peperoni, ScanR, Seesmic, Telecom Italia, Trutap, Wavefront, WURFl, Yahoo! and lots more.
Lunch and Registration - 12 Noon to 1:00pm
Mobile Jam Session - 1:00pm - 5:30pm
Reception: 5:30pm - 7:30pm

Getting to Market with Carlo
2008 the year of "open" in the mobile industry |
We asked our good friend and blogger Carlo Longino for his advice on Getting to Market.
2008 will be the year of "open" in the mobile industry. Operators and device manufacturers are falling over themselves trying to say they're the most open of all their rivals. Most of this talk is just lip service, but it does foreshadow a new era in the mobile industry, one in which operators will place a growing amount of emphasis on service and application innovation from external developers. This means significant opportunities for developers -- so how can you make the most of them?
-- Stay nimble and flexible. First, don't expect operators to get everything right at their first attempt. They'll be making big changes to their business models and entering new and uncharted territory, so keep your patience as they figure out the best way forward. Also, expect every operator to have a different definition of "open". Familiarize yourself with the ins and outs of their programs and policies, and be prepared to modify your products accordingly.
-- Don't dilute the benefits of openness by locking yourself into a particular platform or provider. The point of openness is to make it easier for developers to reach large numbers consumers and customers; getting locked into exclusive commercial deals or into specific platforms for technical reasons could limit this. Also keep in mind that operators are looking to grow the number of non-handset electronic devices connected to their networks (think things like data-enabled GPS units, devices like the Amazon Kindle, and so on), so think about the ways in which you can adapt your services and content to other kinds of devices.
-- Don't forget about your business model. Taking advantage of open access in itself isn't a business model. If you're offering paid services, how will you handle billing? If you're going the ad-supported route, will you get the necessary volume? Also, don't eschew existing distribution channels and business models completely. Keep the flexibility to make the best of all available avenues and encourage a diversity of revenue streams.
Carlo is an independent mobile analyst, consultant and writer who blogs athttp://www.mobhappy.com You can also find him judging the Mobile Monday Peer Awards in Barcelona on Monday, February 11.
