Adding Buttons Can Spark New Business & Deliver an Immediate ROI for a Minimal Investment!
By Sylvia Marmon, CGCM, Supervisor of Printing, City of Boise
Buttons are among the newest offerings provided by the city of Boise's Print & Mail Services. "One of our customers asked if we knew of a place to get buttons made," shares Printing Supervisor Sylvia Marmon, CGCM. "They needed a total of 2000 buttons with 10 different designs." After checking with several button vendors, she discovered that with just a small investment, their in-plant could produce pin-back buttons less expensively than outsourcing the project.
In 2011 they acquired on-line a model 225P from American Button Machines that creates 2.25" buttons. The total price for the button-making machine and a punch hand tool, plus shipping was just $389.95 and that included 250 pin fronts and backs."Our cost, including the button-making system, was 50 cents per button, based on the 2000 order," explains Sylvia. "The best price I found from an outside vendor was $.753 each. We had an instant ROI!"
Since launching their button business, they have produced several smaller batches of buttons for other departments. "We also designed our Christmas card with the idea of promoting our button-making capabilities." If you would like to find out more about button-making, Sylvia Marmon can be reached at smarmon@cityofboise.org |

79 Printed Pieces Win In-Print Awards
Seventy-nine printed pieces from 38 in-plants were selected as winners in this year's In-Print Competition co-sponsored by IPMA and In-Plant Graphics magazine. The winners of the 35 Gold, 25 Silver, 18 Bronze and a Judges Recognition Award were selected from 452 entries submitted by 74 organizations during the full day of judging conducted at IPMA Headquarters.
Chris Anderson, who has served as a judge for the past five years, was particularly impressed by this year's entries. "Every year the competition gets tighter especially in the digital category. So many of the entries were certainly deserving of recognition and could all have been award winners. "
