All that we are is the result of what we have thought

What Are We Up To This Week?

Well I literally have not stopped this week but it has been fantastic.

The first Weight Management Coach course has only 1 place left when I write this and we have now opened another course on the 27th/28th November in Chesham.

If you are in the weight management industry either as a counsellor, a fitness instructor, dietician or life coach and would like to attend the course with myself and Steve Bates training then please check out this link for more info!

On top of that we are now looking at running another course before Xmas in Essex and also courses in January over a weekend for people who can't attend courses during the week.

On a personal level I got my biggest score ever at ten pin bowling last night so am well chuffed today! :-)
Issue: # 11
October 4th 2008
Greetings!

I hope you had a really good week and are looking forward to this very autumnal weekend.

Personally I have had a great week and have really been achieving things which is always a nice way to be moving onwards and upwards (and inwards if you are reducing your weight!)

This weeks article is on a "technique" that I made up but I find it works really well with people when they are stuck in their mindset, or specifically see themselves as "bad" at something and I hope it helps you with either something you are working through or for any of your clients you are working with, I have also found it works very well with my own kids !

As a final thought, I took my four year old daughter to school yesterday in the driving rain and we walked from the car to the reception classroom with the rain absolutely hammering us.

My initial thought was "How bad is this? Where did summer go! What ever happened to summer, I hate rain...etc etc etc" but when I looked at Emily she was loving it! She was bouncing in and out of the puddles and screaming with laughter.

I then realised she reminded me of me when I was that age! And I questioned at what age did I stop enjoying rain and decide it was a "negative" thing.

So I decided I didn't care and I jumped in the puddles with her, I am sure people were watching and thought I was mad but we were loving it and suddenly I didn't care if I was getting wet as I was laughing too much to worry about wet socks!

I now look at my kids who are the picture of happyness as they have no worries, concerns or bothers and therefore I emulate their outlook on life as opposed to the one "society" says I should.

Have a fantastic week!

10 Percent

Just imagine you were 10 percent better....

Most of the time I spend with people 1-2-1 I find they are stuck in a problem, or they perceive themselves as being "bad" at something. My job is to help and coach them to help themselves realise that actually they have other options and they can be and do so much more.

A technique I use quite often is the "10 Percent" technique which I made up last summer.

Let me give you an example.

I worked with a lady who fantastically reduced her weight by many many stones and was at goal weight. She came back for a maintenance weigh in and a chat and said that her problem was that with a hectic business lifestyle she had to eat when she could and sometimes whatever she could because she rarely had time to herself. She also stated that she could never eat healthily as she was always in roadside cafes and petrol stations.

She then went on to say she was "useless" and "incapable" when it came to food which is never good to hear as it is such a limiting belief. (See previous article --> Limiting Beliefs)

So I asked her "OK, imagine you were 10 percent better at looking after yourself when it came to food then what would you do ?"

She then sat and thought for a few seconds, maybe even a minute!

And then it started...she said

1. She could actually eat the healthier options in Little Chef etc as they don't force you to order the Olympic breakfast.
2. She could buy breakfast bars and have them in the car as she used to skip breakfast and then eat more later when she was hungry.
3. She could plan a 30 minute break at lunchtime in her diary to have some downtime and go and find a nice sandwich bar.
4. She could change to black coffee instead of latte's which she drank 3 or 4 of a day.

All the time she was coming up with ideas I was writing them down for her on a pad, when she left I gave her the sheet and off she went to do them.

Now all of a sudden instead of imagining she was 10 percent better, surely is she was doing that she actually was 10 percent better?

But of course I never told her anything, as she is the expert of herself and who am I to tell her whether she should eat salad or chips?

The key to helping people is to simply be their tour guide and help them help themselves.

So turning this to you, think of something that you have a limiting belief about, think about something you percieve you are not very good at and then get a pen, if this relates to weight reduction then great but if not then great anyway!

Write down five things you would do if you were 10 percent better at it. When you have the list then the important thing is to go and take action and do those five things.

After you have done everything on the list and you have got 10 percent better then what if you decided you could be 10 percent better than that :-)

Have an absolutely brilliant week everyone.

Mike :-)
The Last Lecture
Last Lecture
An Inspirational Read

I bought this book at the airport a few weeks ago and it is a truelly magical read.

In America professors are asked to give their "last lecture", this means they give a lecture that, if they had to choose, would be their ultimate lecture on everything they had taught and learnt throughout their careers.

For Randy Pausch this was suddenly not a problem when he was diagnosed with terminal cancer a few weeks before his last lecture.

Instead of pulling out or dwelling on his death he instead did a lecture about life, he talked about seizing the moment, living every day and how to enable his own and others dreams.

The lecture was also written for his children which adds a real dimension to the book and moved me like no other book I have ever read.

This truelly is an amazing read and although at times very emotional it is also exactly how I would want my "last lecture" to be.

Simple amazing and strongly recommended.
