Fall is definitely here! My dehumidifier is still on, yet only being emptied once per day (instead of 4 times/day). The leaves are changing from green to orange to "off the trees".  It's happening fast! Another season is rolling in and preparing us for the next phase. Enjoy the time of harvest, cooler mornings and nights, days of jeans and a sweater, and brisk cool air outside.  Fall is in full force!
WHAT IS LURKING IN YOUR PERSONAL CARE ITEMS?

Ever look at the ingredients on the back of a shampoo or soap bottle?  Can you pronounce more than half of them? I can't, so I looked them up online!  WOW!! What I found was disturbing.  Below are just two common "ingredients" in your personal care items.

1). Sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate - chemicals that cause "foaming"; commonly used in car washes, laundry detergent, mascara, mouthwash, etc. May cause skin irritation, hormone imbalance, and possibly cancer.

2). Proplyene glycol - a cosmetic form of mineral oil that is used in antifreeze, degreaser, wall paper stripper, & hydraulic fluid. KNOWN skin irritant and may cause liver & kidney problems.

These are just TWO of the many harmful ingredients found in personal care items.  If they're in YOUR soaps and shampoos, they are also in your children's products. SYNDROME X = The METABOLIC SYNDROME

What IS syndrome X (aka the metabolic syndrome)? It's a name for a group of symptoms that happen at the same time AND increase your risk of heart disease, diabetes, & stroke. A major contributor to the risk factors is obesity (the 2nd leading cause of preventable death!). Not just any obesity, but "apple-shaped" obesity. Aging, genetics, hormones, and a lack of exercise also contribute to the risk factors.

So why is this so important? All these factors are associated with "gunking" up the body systems. If you have syndrome X, you typically also have high cholesterol, high blood pressure, & high blood sugar. You can see the relation to heart disease and diabetes.

Prevention is always easier than treatment! Prevention requires a healthy lifestyle. Scientific research suggests:

  • Eating a diet low in fat, with a variety of fruits, vegetables, and whole-grain products

  • Getting REGULAR exercise, at least 30 minutes of moderate activity almost every day

  • Losing weight

  • Managing blood pressure and blood sugar

  • Not smoking

  • Trying to include fish, preferably oily fish, in your diet at least twice a week

Best advice: keep active & eat healthy!

The METAL Season: LUNG

From an Eastern perspective, autumn/fall is the METAL season, a time of harvest - a time to pull inward, to store up, and to prepare for the cold stillness of winter.  Also, associated with dryness, the color white, a pungent smell, and rice.  The metal element is associated with the energy of the LUNGS, which relate to the nose, our ability to smell, skin and hair, grief and melancholy, weeping sounds, mucus, and vigor.

The lungs are the most fragile organ in the human body (from an acupuncture perspective) yet also the most vital to our immunity. Because the warmer months of summer are so "scatterred and free" (from an energetic perspective), autumn is a time to contract and focus. Foods can be used to help nourish and protect the lung organ. Adding more SOUR flavored foods, such as sourdough bread, sauerkraut, olives, pickles, aduki beans, vinegar, cheese, yogurt, lemons, limes, grapefruit, and sour varieties of apples and plums nourish the lungs.

With the humidity of summer moving out and the dryness of autumn moving in, the body needs moisture.  Symptoms such as nose bleeds, dry lips, dry skin, and thirst are common this time of year.  Foods that moisten the body are spinach, barley, pear, apple, tofu, soy milk, honey, milk and dairy products, eggs, crab, clams, peanuts, sesame seeds, almonds, pork, and minimizing the use of salt.

Emotionally, the lungs are associated with sadness and grief.  Lungs in harmony can feel sadness and grief for an event/person then let it go.  Those with weak lung energy hold onto that grief and sadness, not letting the emotions go.  Not resolving these emotions causes long term contraction of the lungs and impairs the overall energy in the body, as well as immune system.  According to Paul Pitchford, "Virtually everyone with lung and colon problems, regardless of the source of the problem, has unresolved sadness that needs to be cleared."

Because the lung energy is outwardly expressed by the skin, often you can "see" lung energy in balance or disharmony.  Healthy lung energy outwardly appears as soft, supple skin and lustrous hair.  On the contray, dull or dry skin is indicative of lungs in disharmony.

This season it is important to stay hydrated (prevents dryness), choose sour foods (promotes constriction, thus nourishing lungs), and resolve any lingering grief or sadness.

JACK KNIFE

This is an exercise for your whole body!

In a plank position, put the lower half of your legs (mid-shin to top of foot) on the stability ball and straighten the entire body.  Shoulders are directly over your hands.  Keeping your body tight (no wiggling), pull your knees to your chest (& bring the ball with you!).  Then straighten your legs out and return to a plank position. Repeat this 10 times, rest 30 seconds then do two more sets.

This is a great whole body exercise because you have to keep your upper body stable WHILE you are moving your lower body, and not wiggling so much you fall off the ball.
