RESEARCH NOTES
University of Rhode Island researchers found 34 beneficial compounds in pure maple syrup.  Several of the compounds are anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant in nature; helping fight cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.  The anti-oxidant properties help with Type 2 diabetes management.
Who knew maple syrup was THIS good for you?

April showers definitely brought May flowers! Now is the time to enjoy them.  Run outside, take a hike, go for a bike ride - whatever you do - do it outside! BUT, be sure to bring plenty of water and healthy snacks.  Summer is here and so is the heat! During these next few months, find a way to reduce the heat IN you.  Drink more water, exercise smart, worry less, "chill-out", and enjoy yourself!
NATURAL CLEANING AGENTS

Now that the rain is gone, I feel a need to stare out my windows at the beauty that the rains brought; flowers, lush green trees, etc. But, my windows are very dirty! Rather than reaching for the Windex, I wanted something more natural. After some research, I found information on great all natural cleaning agents! Now I can clean my whole house with no harsh chemicals. Check these out!

Baking Soda: it neutralizes odors in water and absorbs them from the air. GREAT freshner! Sprinkle it on a wet cloth to use as a soft abrasive for countertops, sinks, bathtubs, ovens, and you can even throw some in the laundry!
White vinegar & lemon juice: dissolves gummy buildup on surfaces & removes dirt from wood surfaces. Vinegar (5% solution) kills 99% of bacteria, 82% mold, & 80% germs! It's a natural antibacterial & disinfectant.
Mold killers: Essential oils such as oregano, tea tree, clove, grapefruite seed extract, and cinnamon are great antiseptics. One teaspoon of essential oil to 2 cups water in a spray bottle - spray area.
Window cleaner recipe: 1/4 cup vinegar, 1/2 teaspoon liquid soap, 2 cups water - mix and put in a spray bottle then clean windows.

IS YOUR MAKE-UP SAFE?

Ever wonder if the make-up you're wearing is "safe"? If the ingredients are harmful? Of course not! Why would a company produce something that could potentially cause cancer or be toxic to your body? Most likely because it makes more economic sense to use cheap, caustic, harmful ingredients! Check out this link to see if YOUR make-up makes the "safe" list.
The FIRE Season: HEART

From an Eastern perspective, summer is associated with the HEART energy and with FIRE. Interestingly, the Heart does not like heat yet is susceptible to heat damage. The Heart is responsible for circulation of blood in the body (much the same as Western medicine).  The Heart also "houses the mind". Thus, it is responsible for clear thinking, sleep, memory, and plays a role in our ability to have a healthy relationship. An imbalance in the Heart organ can lead to anxiety, palpitations, excessive sweating, disturbed sleeping, panic attacks, insomnia, excess or no laughter, and forgetfulness.

Many factors can affect the Heart. Emotions are a big one! The heart's natural emotion is joy, yet excessive joy or worry can damage Heart Qi.  Calcium malabsorption and high-protein diets also affect the heart.

Diet can play a positive role in helping nourish the Heart.  Foods that help Heart function and cool the body are salads, cucumbers, cherry, pistachio nuts, red lentils, beets, okra, red bell peppers, scallions, and tomatoes.  However, chocolate, sugar, kale, onions,  and caffeine can damange the Heart meridian by creating too much heat and mucos.  Other cooling foods that are beneficial for the Heart are: tofu, lemons, seafood, yogurt, and summer squash.  To preserve the cooling effect of your food, reduce cook time by steaming or sauteeing.

While common sense would suggest you eat cool foods and drink cold drinks in the summer, you would do the opposite.  Drinking warm liquids and eating warm foods actually promotes sweating, which allows the body to cool itself.  Too much coolness constricts the fluids and the body and hampens digestion.

This summer, stay cool by warming up!
BIRD DOG

This is an exercise for your back muscle strength and stabilization.  Lie on the ball with your belly positioned in the center (as pictured).  Arms on the floor and feet on the floor.  (If you don't have a ball, just get on "all 4s" on the floor).

At the same time, lift and straighten your LEFT leg and RIGHT arm then return to the floor.  Alternate and lift your RIGHT leg and LEFT arm.  Alternate opposite arms with legs.  Perform 3 sets of 15 repetitions each.

Thank you!
