Colorado Symphony's summer lineup reflects a whole new attitude
|
5/06/2012 By Ray Mark Rinaldi The Denver Post When summer comes to Denver, most of the city's fine-arts groups take a warm-weather break. They dabble, but leave the serious playing to the Colorado Rockies.
 | Natalie Merchant will join the Colorado Symphony at the Botanic Gardens on July 17. |
This year, it's a whole new ballgame - at least for the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. The CSO will be going full-swing, preforming more than a dozen times in July, and it will be trying out new positions, taking its team on the road to towns its has never played before. Fans can see the orchestra at Red Rocks jamming on the music of Queen, at the Denver Botanic Gardens backing up Natalie Merchant, in a patriotic program at Civic Center or doing chamber music in the atrium of the new Clyfford Still Museum. But the summer concert lineup announced a few days ago - and it's aggressive, creative and whomped up from previous years - will also take the players west to the Arvada Center's outdoor amphitheater for a moonlight Mozart concert and south for a variety of shows at two recently opened venues, the Lone Tree Arts Center and the Parker Arts, Culture and Events Center. Things will sound different, too. Look for the "symphony" to morph into trios and quartets, chamber ensembles and more. Read On

Minnesota Orchestra trims its staff
|
May 8, 2012 Graydon Royce Minnesota Star-Tribune
Deficit cited for layoff of nine full-time employees and seven part-timers. No musicians were cut.
The Minnesota Orchestra has eliminated nine full-time positions, or 13 percent of its full-time administrative staff. In addition, the orchestra said Tuesday that it has laid off seven part-time employees.
The cuts are in response to the orchestra's 2011 deficit of $2.9 million.
No musicians or artistic staffers were affected by the layoffs. The musicians' union is in negotiations with orchestra management for a new deal to replace the contract that expires in September.
The timing of the staff reductions was intended to coincide with the closing of the season in early June, and the temporary closing of Orchestra Hall. Groundbreaking for a $50 million hall remodeling project will take place this summer. The year-long construction project will expand the lobby and refurbish the auditorium. Read On

Philadelphia Orchestra Tunes Up for Its Future
| 'Fabulous Philadelphians' Plan Bankruptcy Exit With a Revised Labor Pact, Fewer Musicians and a New Lease By PETER LOFTUS April 29, 2012 Wall Street Journal PHILADELPHIA-The Philadelphia Orchestra has traveled the globe in its 112-year history, giving the first performance by an American orchestra in China after President Richard Nixon thawed relations between the countries in the early 1970s.
 | The Kimmel Center's Verizon Hall |
But the "Fabulous Philadelphians," as the orchestra's players are nicknamed, have been on a not-so-fabulous journey through bankruptcy court proceedings. The orchestra, one of the prestigious "Big Five" U.S. ensembles, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in April 2011. Although it had an endowment and no long-term debt at the time, the orchestra wanted to use bankruptcy proceedings to reduce chronic operating losses caused by declining ticket sales, fallen donations, pension obligations and other financial challenges. Attendance had plunged 40% in the preceding 20 years, even while Philadelphia's Center City enjoyed resurgence. Read On

Englewood Arts Presents: 'SOUTH OF THE BORDER!' , 5/19
|
ENGLEWOOD ARTS PRESENTS concludes its 2011-12 Chamber Music of the Masters series with a program entitled 'South of the Border,' featuring CSO Assistant Principal 2nd Violin, Allegra Wermuth and CSO colleagues. Allegra will perform double duty as conductor and soloist for this concert.
 | Allegra Wermuth |
Allegra joined the Colorado Symphony in September 2003 as Assistant Principal Second Violin. She holds degrees from Oberlin Conservatory and Northern Illinois University where she studied with Roland and Almita Vamos and Shmuel Ashkenasi, respectively. Along with her orchestral duties, she maintains a large teaching studio with students ranging from age 3 to 17. She teaches at Preludio, an intensive summer program for highly talented young violinists at Ithaca College. Allegra is also an avid knitter and is the co-founder of the online magazine, Petite Purls, which offers free patterns for children's garments. She also designs knitwear with her own pattern line, Fiddlestix Designs. She lives with her husband and daughter 'as close to the mountains as she can.' The program will include Villa-Lobos' String Quartet No. 1 (CSO musicians Rachel Segal and John Hilton, violin; Mary Cowell, viola; Thomas Heinrich, cello) and Piazzolla's The Four Season of Buenos Aires, the latter of which will feature Allegra as soloist and conductor. A few words from Allegra on this work: 'The first time I heard Piazzolla's Four Seasons of Buenos Aires was a live performance by Gidon Kremer and his group, KremerATA at Orchestra Hall in Chicago. I have been obsessed with the piece ever since. Last summer I had the opportunity to play the Seasons, as soloist and conductor, and I am really excited to be playing it again with my friends and colleagues from the Colorado Symphony.' We hope you will join us for this grand finale to what has been a fabulous 10th anniversary season!

CHASED (A Bill Chase Tribute Band) - looking for back-up male vocalist
|
CHASED is Denver's own Bill Chase Tribute band playing authentic transcriptions of the 70's jazz/rock group, Chase. This is the only group sanctioned by the Bill Chase estate. We cover all the tunes from the three albums Chase recorded plus a number of never recorded tunes (only played live). Our instrumentation is 4 trumpets, bass, guitar, keys, drums and vocals. We seek a back-up male vocalist to cover as necessary. This position requires some relatively high male vocal chops. All vocal tunes have lyric sheets (only). The time requirement (as of now) is NOT very demanding. We rehearse 2-3 nights before a gig. Currently gigging only 2x year at Dazzle. Pursuing more playing opportunities; recently recorded a demo.
If you need to hear some of the tunes, a search on YouTube will yield lots of clips. If interested or have questions, please contact Scott with a brief musical resume via e-mail (scotthandler@comcast.net)

Kailin Yong's Violin and other instruments stolen
|
Our close friend Kailin Yong had his car broken into (5/01/12) at the Mercury Cafe in Denver. He pretty much lost his livelihood as a musician, including his violin. Here are his words, please read them & see if there's a way you can help, even if just to get the word out around Colorado: . "Big shift in my ocean tonight. The right back window of my car was smashed in and my entire livelihood got... lifted out of the back seat outside of the Mercury Cafe. Items stolen include my workhorse fiddle, trusty friend and companion for the last 20 years - a violin made in 1957 by Louis Bertrand in Paris, a violin bow made by Evan Orman with engraving that reads "Love & Music Kailin" on the silver ferrule, a Michael DaSilva custom concert ukulele with a Yin-Yang symbol inlaid on the head stock. A big request to all my musician friends and friends who frequent pawn shops, second hand music stores, and those of you who browse ebay and Craigslist to keep an eye out for these items. Please help spread the word and help me relocate these instruments, otherwise I might be looking at a career change soon. ;-)"

Summer Course in the Alexander Technique at CU Boulder, 7/14
|
 | James Brody |
The 18th Annual Summer Course in the Alexander Technique at the University of Colorado at Boulder will be held July 9-13, 9:00 to noon daily. A one day Intensive will be held July 14, 1-5:00 pm. The 2012 faculty includes Ed Bilanchone, Amy Likar, and DMA member James Brody. Early registration by DMA members will result in a 15% reduction in tuition.
The Alexander Technique is a powerful tool for changing habits in movement and thinking. While anyone can benefit from this Technique, the work applies especially well to musicians and educators. Participants will learn about generalized and specific body use issues that can affect both performance and educational settings, as well as practical skills for the classroom. The results of a medical study in England that investigated the Alexander Technique were recently published in the British Medical Journal. A link to a summary of the study and a short film about it can be found at http://www.bmj.com/content/337/bmj.a884 For more information about the Course and the Alexander Technique in general, please consult the following web site: (http://music.colorado.edu/departments/wellness/) or contact DMA member James Brody (brody@colorado.edu).

Celebrating the life and music of Mort Mann, 5/16
|
For those of you who are interested, services in memory of Uncle Mort will be held at 3:00 on Wednesday, May 16th, at the graveside in Fairmount Cemetery, located at Alameda and Quebec. Go in the main entrance, which is just south of Quebec on the east side of the street. Head up the hill and turn right, then bear right again on the "main road" that circulates around the cemetery. You will find the gravesite fairly quickly. It's in the Temple Emanuel section, which is in the westernmost part of the grounds just a little south of the main entrance. A celebration of Mort's life will be held at my house, 1136 Fillmore St (in Congress Park), following the services and lasting into the evening for those who cannot come until after work.

Trumka on 'Newsmakers': Romney Policies Could Pull Us Back Into Recession
| May 7, 2012
Rather than pursuing bipartisanship to create jobs, congressional Republicans pushed their priority of making Obama a one-term president, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka said yesterday on C-SPAN's "Newsmakers." In the wide-ranging interview, Trumka discussed the U.S. Supreme Court and the health care act, building a permanent campaign structure for all working people and why NLRB member Terence Flynn has to go.

115,000 Jobs Created in April
| May 4, 2012
Job growth in April rose by 115,000, above the 100,000 needed to keep up with new job entrants. The unemployment rate improved a tad, from 8.2 percent in March to 8.1 percent in April, as did the number of jobless, which declined from 12.7 million in March to 12.5 million in April, according to U.S. Department of Labor data ( http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm ) released this morning. But the one-tenth of a percent improvement in the nation's jobless rate is "due to people dropping out of the labor force, not an increase in the share of the working-age population with jobs," notes the Economic Policy Institute.

Call Verizon TODAY and Tell It to Treat Workers Fairly
| May 3, 2012
Thousands of working families are outside the Verizon shareholder meeting today in Huntsville, Ala., to protest the company's "VeriGreedy" treatment of customers, workers and taxpayers. Even as Verizon tripled the compensation of CEO Lowell McAdam to $23.1 million last year ( http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-20120319-714892.html ), the corporation was outsourcing U.S. jobs, gutting worker pensions and raising health care costs. Employees have been struggling to win a new contract for nearly a year. Call Verizon today at 800-229-9460. Tell the company to give workers a fair shake.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
