In Memory - Morton Mann
| 
Mort Mann, a lifelong professional musician and longtime DMA member, passed away the morning of December 22nd after a lengthy illness. He was born in Denver on June 29, 1924. He lived in the family home at 919 St. Paul Street from shortly after his birth until 2009.. Mort was the son of Joe Mann and nephew of Cecil Mann, both highly regarded musicians in the Denver music scene. Joe Mann was one of the premier bookers and leaders of musical groups during the 20's and 30's both in Colorado and nationwide. Mort was a graduate of East High School with high scholastic and musical honors. He served in the Army from April 1943 through March 1946, first at Lowry Field in Denver and later in Italy. He played French Horn in the 522nd AAF Concert Military Band. He also played piano and accordion in a dance band that played for enlisted men's and officer's dances. His music was broadcast over KOA and KLZ radio here at home, as well as in Italy. After the war, Mort attended Yale University where he studied composition under Paul Hindemith. His education was interrupted by family illness, causing him to complete his studies and degree at the University of Denver. Mort wrote an exquisite 8-pc book for alto, tenor, bari, trumpet, trombone, bass & drums. Though drawn from commercial titles of the day, Mort crafted clever phrasing, modulations, and "Mort Chords" (a liberal use of secondary dominants). After playing the book, musicians often commented on the experience as though it was written specifically for their instrument. Mort typically booked his band above union scale and almost always split the proceeds with his sidemusicians. He taught piano lessons in addition to running his own band and playing numerous gigs. He loved his home, which was impeccably decorated and had some amazing flower gardens. Mort was highly regarded by all who knew him as an impeccable musician and a true gentleman. Mort was never married; as his sister used to say, he was married to his music. His parents were Joseph Mann and Ethel Weinberger; sister was Ruth Betty (Mann) Schoen, who passed away in 2003. He is survived by a niece, Heidi Schnicker, and longtime friend and personal assistant Irene Haro. A memorial service will be held in mid-May at Fairmount Cemetery (probably May 15 or 16) with a reception afterwards at Heidi's home in Congress Park. Donations are being accepted in Mort Mann's name by Our Musical Heritage, which will further Mort's love for youth music education opportunities. Checks can be mailed to: Our Musical Heritage, Inc. The Colorado Symphony Orchestra unveils new business model

Vowing to move forward with the bottom line in mind, the cash-strapped Colorado Symphony Orchestra unveiled a new, consumer-first business model Monday that managers hailed as pathway to a financially secure future.
The plan changes the way the CSO does business, putting more emphasis on earned income rather than donations, working closely with educational groups and corporations to demonstrate its value beyond music-making and using newer technologies, such as video screens during concerts and social networking sites, to help it connect with contemporary audiences.
Artistically, the plan plays down the organization's middle name by diminishing its emphasis on large symphonic pieces. The CSO will still play Beethoven and Brahms masterworks at Boettcher Concert Hall downtown, but will also perform more intimate programs of chamber music, and pieces for quartets and quintets at smaller venues across the region. Those concerts will require fewer musicians and greatly reduce labor costs per concert.

Heather Miller & Bruce Clinton throwing spitballs ... again

As much as they keep trying, resigned CSO board members Heather K Miller and Bruce Clinton are failing to show any evidence that the CSO is holding firm to an unsustainable business model. As board members they were more determined to shut the organization down than take the lead into the future. Rather than accept their personal failings as board members they repeatedly tried to paint "union work rules" as their scapegoat, despite the simple fact that the musicians repeatedly yielded to their demands.
The first spitball was Miller and Clinton's politically charged editorial, published in the Denver Post on November 13 - two months after they walked away from their responsibilities as board members. Their latest was a December 22nd interview with Mike Rosen on KOA (850 AM). They initially hoped to have the show to themselves, but a CSO board co-chair arranged after the fact to call in during the later part of the show. It wasn't until that moment on live radio that Miller and Clinton learned of all the good that happened since they walked away, including the CSO's announcement of a new business plan that was vetted by an inclusive committee and broadly endorsed by the musicians.
In full disclosure, Mike Rosen admitted "I don't like labor unions" and "haven't gone to a symphony concert in probably 10 years, maybe longer." So, this is the perfect forum for Miller and Clinton who chose to put themselves on public display with a talk show host who knows nothing of the subject matter except that he shares their political ideology.

Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra Presents
Every month, MJO features two different high school jazz ensembles in concert at Dazzle! Playing the second and third Monday of each month (with some exceptions), the school plays one set followed by a set from MJO. The big finale includes both bands on stage featuring soloists from both groups. Pianist looking to form jazz trio
|
I am looking for a base or cello player and a drummer to form a jazz trio. I can perform 200 songs, and can keep the melody and major harmonies moving. I've played solo during the last 15 years, which has been fun, but I think greater opportunities are available to groups. The last gig I did was at the Wolf Rock Steakhouse in Keystone, Colorado.
My last jazz group was the Equinox Quartet, which, among many other gigs, backed Flash Cadillac in Vail, played for eight weeks at the Denver Playboy Club penthouse in the old Radisson hotel on Grant Street, and Tulagi's in Boulder. Prior to my trio I played in the group Cancion, run by Frank Wexler, in and around Denver. Prior to that I played in the Blue Jazzmen Trio, which got a write-up in the Denver Post, performing, among many other places from Colorado to Illinois. I was also a finalist in the Liberace Piano Contest in 1986. My main purpose in playing is to become recognized, earn a decent income, and have a lot of fun. I have an album out-"Classically Blue"-entirely of my own compositions, some of which have aired on KVOD. I also wrote a song for my friend, Eric Hererra, who recorded it on his album, "A New Life." Our Musical Heritage, Inc. (OMH) a Colorado 501c(3) non-profit arm of the Denver Musicians Association (DMA) has set up a CSO Musicians Assistance Fund. This Fund will accept tax-deductible contributions from the general public who wish to assist Colorado Symphony Orchestra (CSO) musicians who are facing financial challenges due to a reduction in scheduled concerts for at least the next two months. Funds will be disbursed to the CSO musicians in consultation with an Assistance Fund Committee. Cash or checks will be accepted. Checks should be made out to Our Musical Heritage, Inc. House Republicans Scrooge Jobless Workers
| A Living Wage, Long Overdue

New York City provides hundreds of millions of dollars a year in taxpayer-financed subsidies to private developers. It is only right that the jobs created by those projects pay a decent wage. The Fair Wages for New Yorkers Act, widely known as the living-wage bill, would nudge these employers in the right direction.
The bill now before the City Council would require future development projects that receive $1 million or more in discretionary financial assistance from the city to pay $10 an hour plus benefits for full-time workers and $11.50 an hour without benefits for at least 10 years. That may not be much, but it is an improvement over the minimum wage of $7. 25 an hour.

Comprised of some Metropolitan State College students and community members, the band under the direction of Gerald Endsley meets on Tuesday evenings from 7-9 P.M. in the King Center Concert Hall on the Auraria campus. All wind and percussion instruements are welcome and there are no fees, auditions, or chair placements. The band generaly shares two concerts per semester with other metro ensembles. The Department of Fine and Performing Arts Music Program at Regis University calls on faculty, staff and community string players (violin, viola, cello, double bass) to join its Chamber String Ensemble this fall at Regis. The goal is to establish and develop the University's first college/community chamber orchestra.
The Chamber String Ensemble is currently under the direction of Dr. Charles Lee and rehearses on Monday afternoons from 4:00 to 6:00pm. Its winter concert is scheduled for Wednesday, December 7. While students must register for the course, faculty and staff do not need to register but may do so if they are seeking credit.

Community Band Seeking New Members (Edgewater/Lakewood)

Our non-profit Mile High Community Band seeks musicians of all ages, teen through adult, and at all levels of accomplishment, to join us for rehearsals on Thursday nights in Edgewater (just west of Denver).
Our organization's mission is to provide rewarding music education and performance opportunities for youth and adults at all skill levels. We have various bands for different skill levels, beginning through advanced, including jazz/blues and concert bands. In particular, we welcome additional brass and woodwind musicians.
We meet Thursday evenings at Jefferson High School in Edgewater for rehearsals. Monthly memberships begin at $25-$35/month, but we can waive fees and provide instruments for those who need them - no one with an interest in playing music will be turned away. Family discounts also available.

1876 Prague Cello - 4/4 Violincello on rare 'small' pattern
Description: Small pattern full-size cello. The back is two-piece maple, semi-slab cut with faint figure in the lower half. The ribs are similar the back with rather more curl and figure. The top is of spruce, two pieces, with rather wide, irregular grain widening away from the middle. The neck and pegbox are original crowned by a rather large volute. The varnish is reddish-brown
in color. Despite the presence of several well-mended cracks, the condition of the cello is good.

Mechanism: 18% nickel silver keys with silver plating. Full German system with High D and E keys. Ring key for wing joint third finger hole. Right hand whisper lock. Rollers on F, Ab, Eb, Db, right thumb Bb and F#, in combination with a crowned E key. Bb Guard. Metal tubes extending into the bore in the finger holes of the wing and boot joints to prevent water from entering the tone holes. All posts are set with epoxy and spring posts are locked with screws.
Body: Red Maple, selected for tone quality, naturally aged in our own facilities. Natural rubber linings in the wing joint and small bore of the boot joint. French bell (metal ring). Body Lock. Complete re-pad and service done by Fox summer 2010. Accessories:Fine plush-lined case (original).

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
