In the UK: Equity launches low pay/no pay campaign
Published Thursday 26 April 2012 at 10:23 by Matthew Hemley
THE STAGE NEWS

Performers will be urged to pursue legal action against companies paying less  than the minimum wage, as part of a new Equity campaign aimed at stamping out exploitation in the industry.

The union's plans for targeted activity around the issue of low and unpaid work in the performing arts sector has arisen from a working party, which made 19  recommendations to the union's ruling council on how to progress Equity's policy on the subject.

These recommendations, all of which were backed by the council, included doing more to encourage "members to fight national minimum wage cases",  persuading casting companies "not  to include low pay/no pay work", and  clarifying what is meant by profit share.

Equity's campaign is also expected to provide tighter guidelines on members' rights for performers working in fringe theatre.

President Malcolm Sinclair said: "Working for nothing is becoming too usual for newcomers to the profession, and not just newcomers. An Equity working party has been examining this whole matter. Underlying our whole approach is the belief that if anyone makes money out of a show, then the performer makes money."

Retirement Centers - a growth industry for musicians
The Seniors "industry"  is one of the fastest-growing industries in Colorado and growing bigger every day because it's financed by home sales and investments of retiring baby, middle-class boomers. They have voluntarily or involuntarily retired and who no longer want to mow their own lawn and paint the porch but do want a decent quality of life without all the daily chores.
Rod Taylor
Rod Taylor

DMA member Rod Taylor has tapped into this expanding economy and now authors the All Around Seniors website/blog to further promote it and . "Our web site is a blog page dedicated to the Seniors I play for, the lifestyle they live, and the places they get to live it!" says Rod. "With their disappearance from our neighborhoods, many other things have also disappeared, and Night Clubs that used to employ musicians are among the most obvious. I don't know how many retirement homes there are in Colorado or how many people are in those retirement homes but as a rough estimate if you said there were 500 homes of various levels and each home had 50 people (conservative number) at an average monthly cost of $2500 it doesn't take long to figure out what is making this industry grow!"

The good news  for musicians is that as the Seniors industry grows, employment opportunities for those entertainers who feel they are qualified to do this type of work grows as well and in this economy, it just might be the type of thing you could (or should) take a look at www.allaroundseniors.com
Federal Arts Endowment Sharply Cuts PBS Grants
By ELIZABETH JENSEN
NY Times
Published: April 25, 2012

The National Endowment for the Arts made sweeping cuts in its support of established PBS shows on Wednesday, and for the first time awarded significant grants to an array of gaming, mobile and Web-based projects.
Among the PBS programs receiving significantly less financing under the 2012 Arts in Media grants were "Live From Lincoln Center," which was awarded $100,000 last year and nothing this year.

The Metropolitan Opera received $50,000 for its national "Great Performances at the Met" telecasts, $100,000 less than in 2011. WNET in New York received $50,000 to support other "Great Performances" productions and the same amount for "American Masters," compared to $400,000 for each last year.

Louisville Orchestra musicians, management reach short-term deal
Written by Dan Klepal, The Courier-Journal, 5:06 PM, Apr. 25, 2012

After 20 months of contentious negotiations, an agreement has been reached
between the Louisville Orchestra musicians and management that both sides
hope will result in a long-term deal.

Under the agreement, the orchestra will play a 30-week season starting in
September, and calls for an arbitrator to review all aspects of orchestra
operations.

If the two sides can't agree on a long-term contract, they will enter into
binding arbitration with the consultant.

CHASED (A Bill Chase Tribute Band) - looking for back-up male vocalist

CHASED is Denver's own Bill Chase Tribute band playing authentic transcriptions of the 70's jazz/rock group, Chase. This is the only group sanctioned by the Bill Chase estate. We cover all the tunes from the three albums Chase recorded plus a number of never recorded tunes (only played live). Our instrumentation is 4 trumpets, bass, guitar, keys, drums and vocals. We seek a back-up male vocalist to cover as necessary. This position requires some relatively high male vocal chops. All vocal tunes have lyric sheets (only). The time requirement (as of now) is NOT very demanding. We rehearse 2-3 nights before a gig. Currently gigging only 2x year at Dazzle. Pursuing more playing opportunities; recently recorded a demo.

If you need to hear some of the tunes, a search on YouTube will yield lots of clips. If interested or have questions, please contact Scott with a brief musical resume via e-mail (scotthandler@comcast.net)

James Brody
The 18th Annual Summer Course in the Alexander Technique at the University of Colorado at Boulder will be held July 9-13, 9:00 to noon daily. A one day Intensive will be held July 14, 1-5:00 pm. The 2012 faculty includes Ed Bilanchone, Amy Likar, and DMA member James Brody. Early registration by DMA members will result in a 15% reduction in tuition.

The Alexander Technique is a powerful tool for changing habits in movement and thinking. While anyone can benefit from this Technique, the work applies especially well to musicians and educators. Participants will learn about generalized and specific body use issues that can affect both performance and educational settings, as well as practical skills for the classroom. The results of a medical study in England that investigated the Alexander Technique were recently published in the British Medical Journal. A link to a summary of the study and a short film about it can be found at http://www.bmj.com/content/337/bmj.a884 For more information about the Course and the Alexander Technique in general, please consult the following web site: (http://music.colorado.edu/departments/wellness/) or contact DMA member James Brody (brody@colorado.edu).

Celebrating the life and music of Mort Mann, 5/16
Mort Mann

For those of you who are interested, services in memory of Uncle Mort will be held at 3:00 on Wednesday, May 16th, at the graveside in Fairmount Cemetery, located at Alameda and Quebec. Go in the main entrance, which is just south of Quebec on the east side of the street.   Head up the hill and turn right, then bear right again on the "main road" that circulates around the cemetery. You will find the gravesite fairly quickly.   It's in the Temple Emanuel section, which is in the westernmost part of the grounds just a little south of the main entrance. A celebration of Mort's life will be held at my house, 1136 Fillmore St (in Congress Park), following the services and lasting into the evening for those who cannot come until after work.

Trumka: Wal-Mart Bribery Charges 'Breathtaking'
April 26, 2012

This week's reports from The New York Times that found "credible evidence that bribery played a persistent and significant role in Wal-Mart's rapid growth in Mexico" are breathtaking, says AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka in a Huffington Post column. He says they show "the utter futility of expecting large corporations, their boards and their law firms to police themselves." Click here ( http://www.huffingtonpost.com/richard-trumka/walmart-mexico-bribery_b_1455680.html ) for the full column.

Republican Attack on Fair Election Rule Fails
April 25, 2012

Senate Republicans yesterday failed (45-54) to kill a new National Labor Relations Board rule that makes modest changes in the procedures for workers who want to vote on whether to form a union. Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
