An Interview with Tom Jensen - JSG's Music Director
|
Part II of a two-part expose' of the Junior Symphony Guild Interview by Pete VriesengaThe Denver Musician, Spring, 2012
"Flanked by navel oranges, caramel apple dip, a huge pile of tomatoes and 4-pound cartons of "old-fashioned" potato salad (you know, the kind Grandma used to box), the Colorado Springs Philharmonic prepared to help Tom Jensen do what no conductor has done before: conduct for 24 hours straight. In perhaps the most unpretentious concert setting imaginable -- the produce section of King Soopers on West Uintah -- musicians played in shifts at Jensen's insistence." And Jensen, would occasionally get on the store mic and ask: "can I get a price check on a cellist?" That was the opener from a May 29, 2003 Colorado Springs Independent news story, reporting on a 24-hr marathon fundraiser for the Colorado Springs Philharmonic Orchestra. The fledgling orchestra was just gaining its footing after the collapse of the former Colorado Springs Symphony. Tom Jensen proposed this marathon as public relations and fundraising opportunity for the orchestra. The CSPO raised $13,500 in 24 hours and brought the community together which brought in $1 million......... and received a welcome barrage of local and national publicity, including the TODAY Show, CNN, FOX News, and a picture picked up by the AP wire .... Chicago Orchestra breaks 20-year silence in Russia
|
Wed, Apr 18 2012
By Nastassia Astrasheuskaya MOSCOW (Reuters) - The Chicago Symphony Orchestra performs in Russia for the first time since the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union on Wednesday, hoping to show Russian audiences a different side of American cultural with its rendition of Soviet composer Dmitry Shostakovich. The performance is the highlight of this year's American Seasons festival in Russia -- a series of cultural exchanges led by the U.S. Embassy in Moscow and the Russian Cultural Ministry to strengthen ties between the former Cold War foes.

Lancaster Symphony to fight union ruling
| The symphony will raise anew the underlying issue: are musicians employees or independent contractors? By TIM MEKEEL Staff Writer lancasteronline.com The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra will challenge a National Labor Relations Board ruling that allowed its musicians to unionize. The symphony will take the matter to either the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals or the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals, officials said Wednesday. "We feel strongly about our position and we're moving forward with our appeal," said Scott Robinson, the symphony's president and chief executive officer. Depending on the court's finding, the symphony action could overturn last month's apparent victory by pro-union musicians, which capped a five-year effort. But it will be at least a year until the symphony and its musicians learn whether the pro-union vote sticks. "It saddens us deeply that they're not willing to negotiate," said John Hess, secretary-treasurer of Local 294 of the American Federation of Musicians. The key issue in the unionizing battle remains whether the musicians are employees or independent contractors. Read On

Guerrilla Promotion and Artist Development
| By David Codr Founder of Musicpage.com
 | David Codr |
After promoting or producing around 1,000 concerts, managing bands, booking tours and scouting talent, you pick up a few tricks of the trade. That's how I started doing artist development work. The gang at Indie Extreme asked if I would share a few of my artist development techniques in this newsletter. So if you are looking for some artist development techniques, read on.
How to Get 3,000 New Fans in the Next 12 Months, For FREE Running a web community like Musicpage.com, I get a lot of artist development questions from our artist users. When I do, one of the first things I do is ask how many fans a band or performer has. If I get a non-specific answer like "a lot" I know the band isnt doing a very good job of collecting information or growing their fan base.
Most bands have figured out how to get people to become their friend on facebook or twitter, but that's not a real fan base. A fan base is more than a list of names. A real fan base is a growing entity with its own quirks and personality. Maybe its best to consider WHY you are trying to build a fan base. Sadly, most artists think its simply to have the biggest list. But your fan base shouldn't be about quantity as much as it is about quality. In the most simple terms, building a fan base is all about cultivating a list of your customers.

Fresno Grand Opera: Musicians union dispute isn't about wages
| By Larry Gardner President of AFM Local 12
When workers strike, it is often assumed that the issue is wages and benefits. Representatives of Local 12 of the American Federation of Musicians and the Fresno Grand Opera began bargaining during the fall of 2010.
Having reached no agreement one year later, both parties sought bargaining assistance: for FGO - a local labor attorney; for Local 12 - a negotiator from the national office along with a federal mediator.
On March 26, after four months and no resolution, the musicians reaffirmed a strike authorization vote that was initially taken in November 2011. The issues in the dispute are about how, when and for what engagement musicians are hired.

CHASED (A Bill Chase Tribute Band) - looking for back-up male vocalist
|
CHASED is Denver's own Bill Chase Tribute band playing authentic transcriptions of the 70's jazz/rock group, Chase. This is the only group sanctioned by the Bill Chase estate. We cover all the tunes from the three albums Chase recorded plus a number of never recorded tunes (only played live). Our instrumentation is 4 trumpets, bass, guitar, keys, drums and vocals. We seek a back-up male vocalist to cover as necessary. This position requires some relatively high male vocal chops. All vocal tunes have lyric sheets (only). The time requirement (as of now) is NOT very demanding. We rehearse 2-3 nights before a gig. Currently gigging only 2x year at Dazzle. Pursuing more playing opportunities; recently recorded a demo.
If you need to hear some of the tunes, a search on YouTube will yield lots of clips. If interested or have questions, please contact Scott with a brief musical resume via e-mail (scotthandler@comcast.net)

Summer Course in the Alexander Technique at CU Boulder, 7/14

 | James Brody |
The 18th Annual Summer Course in the Alexander Technique at the University of Colorado at Boulder will be held July 9-13, 9:00 to noon daily. A one day Intensive will be held July 14, 1-5:00 pm. The 2012 faculty includes Ed Bilanchone, Amy Likar, and DMA member James Brody. Early registration by DMA members will result in a 15% reduction in tuition.
The Alexander Technique is a powerful tool for changing habits in movement and thinking. While anyone can benefit from this Technique, the work applies especially well to musicians and educators. The results of a medical study in England that investigated the Alexander Technique were recently published in the British Medical Journal. A link to a summary of the study and a short film about it can be found at http://www.bmj.com/content/337/bmj.a884 For more information about the Course and the Alexander Technique in general, please consult the following web site: (http://music.colorado.edu/departments/wellness/) or contact DMA member James Brody (brody@colorado.edu).

Add your act to the AFM's new booking service
| With the approaching public launch of AFM Entertainment, now is the time to add your musical act to the AFM's new booking service. We will be booking gigs for all genres, from classical to jazz to hip-hop to rock. And every job will pay at least the appropriate local scale wages and benefits.
To participate, you'll need a solid, engaging electronic press kit. That means a well-written bio, at least one professional-grade photograph, and either great-sounding audio or a decent video.
As AFM President Ray Hair wrote, "When we work together and book that job, we will have partly answered that age-old question, 'What does the union do for me?'"

URGENT: Workers' Rights on the Line
| Corporate-bought politicians are taking aim at workers again. And this time, they've got fair elections for workers in the crosshairs.
In December, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB)--the federal agency that protects workers' rights--issued a rule that modernizes the NLRB election process and helps ensure workers have a fair way to form a union without unfair delays and manipulation of the process by employers.
Now, anti-worker politicians in Congress are trying to ram through a resolution to undo this modest step forward for the 99%.
The resolution is headed for a vote in the U.S. Senate this week, and we need your voice in this debate. Please take 30 seconds to write your senators NOW: [ http://act.aflcio.org/c/18/p/dia/action3/common/public/?action_KEY=4195 ].

Tell Senate: Stop Attack on Fair Union Elections
| April 18, 2012
Congressional Republicans--backed by their corporate sponsors--are continuing their assault on the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) and workers' rights. This time, Republican senators are trying to ram through a resolution to kill a new rule by the NLRB that ensures that workers who want to vote to form a union at their workplace get a fair opportunity to do so. Click here to tell your senators to vote "No" on S.J. Res. 36 ( http://act.aflcio.org/c/18/p/dia/action3/common/public/?action_KEY=4195 ).

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
