In Memory - Derryl Faber Goes
|
 September 9, 1929 - April 9, 1929
Derryl Faber Goes, 82, of Greeley, CO passed away April 9, 2012 at Fairacres Manor in Greeley.
He was born September 9, 1929 in LaCrosse, KS to Herman and Minnie (Faber) Goes. Derryl graduated from the Atchison County Community High School in 1947. Derryl served his country during the Korean War from 1948 to 1952 on the USS Missouri. Derryl was Musician Third Class in the Admiral's Band. Upon returning home, he attended and graduated from Ft. Hays State College in 1956 with a Bachelor of Music degree.
While attending Ft. Hays, Derryl met the love of his life, Shirley Thomas. On January 22, 1955, Derryl and Shirley were married. They followed their dreams to come to Colorado and teach. Derryl went on to obtain his Master of Arts for Teacher degree from CSU in 1965. The family then moved to Greeley where Derryl began working for the University of Northern Colorado; he helped establish the music education program in Jazz as it stands today.
Derryl loved writing and playing music; he played many joyful years with Johnny Smith, Stan Kenton, Dean Bushnell, and many other jazz greats. His heart was always in the Rocky Mountains. He built four cabins in the mountains, spent time there with his family and friends, and he especially enjoyed his grandchildren. His family will remember him as a loving and devoted father and grandfather who was always ready with a joke or funny story.
He is survived by his daughters, Laura Faber (Kell) Hulsey and Krista (Jim) Hill, all of LaSalle, CO; his son, Gregory of Tucson, AZ; granddaughters, Kelli Faber (Kevin) Hesseltine of Glen Head, NY, Elizabeth Hill and Jamie (Emiliano) Bara all of Denver, CO; grandsons, Daniel and Benjamin Hulsey both of Evans, CO; great granddaughter, Sofia Faber Hesseltine of Glen Head, NY; great grandsons, Augustus John Hesseltine of Glen Head, NY and Maceo Saiz Bara of Denver; sister, Gloria Witte of Kansas City, MO; and three brothers, Dennis (Lola) Goes of San Jose, CA, Eugene Goes of San Antonio, TX and Harley (Ester) Goes of San Jose, CA.
Derryl is preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Shirley; his parents Herman and Minnie Goes and a sister-in-law Terry Goes.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, April 13, 2012 at Adamson Chapel. Memorial Contributions may be made to "LaSalle Volunteer Fire Department" in care of Adamson Funeral & Cremation Services, 2000 47th Avenue, Greeley, CO 80634. | The management of the Louisville Orchestra has announced that they intend to immediately hire a replacement orchestra.
The Louisville Orchestra Musicians Association (LOMA) has established an on-line petition that will allow you to demonstrate your support for the musicians of this great and historic orchestra. Crucial Year for Minn. Orchestra

In concert, the band has rarely sounded better. Backstage, the Minnesota Orchestra faces a year of living dangerously.
Last December, the organization reported its biggest annual deficit ever. In June, the band evacuates Orchestra Hall for a yearlong face-lift of its iconic home on Nicollet Mall. A shortened 2012-13 season opens in October in the acoustically challenged Minneapolis Convention Center.
The greatest challenge comes even sooner.
On Thursday, high-stakes negotiations begin on the musicians' contract, which expires in September. Management says it must resolve "unsustainable fiscal practices" by cutting costs. Musicians hear that and wonder how the organization can spend $50 million on the building project and continue touring and recording plans. Musicians' salaries account for 48 percent of the orchestra's $32 million budget for fiscal 2012.
"The full extent of where we are will not work itself out for five years," said orchestra president Michael Henson. "Change is always difficult."

Opening this Litton conducted performance is Brahms' Academic Festival Overture, described by Brahms as "a very boisterous potpourri of student songs." Pianist Pascal Roge is highlighted on Mozart's famous piano concerto No. 21, featured in the 1967 Swedish film Elvira Madigan. The concert concludes with one of the most revered works in the repertoire, Tchaikovsky's 4th.

Englewood Arts Presents: TRIO CORDILLERAS, 4/28
| ENGLEWOOD ARTS PRESENTS continues its Chamber Music of the Masters series with a performance by Trio Cordilleras (please note that Trio Cordilleras replaces the Papilia Quartet, originally scheduled on this date but unable to perform due to circumstances beyond their control).
Members of Trio Cordilleras include violinist Elizabeth Kipper, cellist Thomas Heinrich, and pianist Alejandro Cremaschi. The group was formed in Boulder, Colorado in 2006. A Cordillera, both in English and Spanish, is a chain of mountains. Just like the music the Trio performs, a long stretch of Cordilleras joins the Americas together, from Argentina to Canada. Trio Cordilleras performs works by composers of the Americas and Spain. The trio's first CD, "Las Puertas del Tiempo: the Music of Luis Jorge Gonzalez," released by the British label Meridian Records in 2009, was warmly received by the specialized press.

Elizabeth Kipper began her violin studies at the age of seven. After graduating from the Juilliard School, she spent two years playing in the Fort Worth Symphony, four years as a member of the Colorado Symphony, and five summers at the Grand Teton Music Festival. As an active orchestral and chamber musician, she has performed extensively throughout the United State and abroad. Ms. Kipper maintains an active interest in teaching and bringing music to young audiences. She is currently a member of the Boulder Piano Quartet and lives in Boulder with her husband, cellist Thomas Heinrich, and their son Eli and daughter Emi.

Thomas Heinrich has been a member of the Colorado Symphony since 1997. He is also the assistant principal cellist of The Santa Fe Opera orchestra and for eight seasons served as principal cellist of the Grand Teton Music Festival orchestra. He is a founding member of the Boulder Piano Quartet. His performances have been broadcast across North America on CBC Radio's Chamber Music at Noon, NPR's Performance Today, and CPR's Colorado Spotlight. He has recorded for the Summit, Koch, Meridian, and EMF labels. Mr. Heinrich lives in Boulder with his wife, violinist Beth Kipper, and their children Eli and Emi.

Alejandro Cremaschi, pianist, was born in Mendoza, Argentina. He currently teaches piano and piano pedagogy at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He received a Doctorate degree in Piano Performance from the University of Minnesota and undergraduate degrees from the University of Maryland in Baltimore and the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo in Argentina. Praised as an intelligent and sensitive pianist, he has played in numerous cities worldwide. He was a prize winner at the International Beethoven Sonata Piano Competition in Memphis, Tennessee in 2001.
The program will include works by Constatino Gaito, Joaquín Turina, Luis J. González, Paquito D'Rivera, Enrique Francini and Ástor Piazzolla.

I will be bringing in renowned pianist/ composer David Pearl from New York City. In addition, Bijoux Barbosa will join us on bass and my son Trevor (drum set) will be flying in from LA for this special concert - The Joe Anderies, David Pearl Reunion Concert. Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra Presents
Every month, MJO features two different high school jazz ensembles in concert at Dazzle! Playing the second and third Monday of each month (with some exceptions), the school plays one set followed by a set from MJO. The big finale includes both bands on stage featuring soloists from both groups. One of MJO's missions is to support jazz in the schools and this program, in our 6th year, continues to be wildly successful. Reservation ALWAYS recommended at Dazzle (303-839-5100). CHASED is Denver's own Bill Chase Tribute band playing authentic transcriptions of the 70's jazz/rock group, Chase. This is the only group sanctioned by the Bill Chase estate. We cover all the tunes from the three albums Chase recorded plus a number of never recorded tunes (only played live). Our instrumentation is 4 trumpets, bass, guitar, keys, drums and vocals. We seek a back-up male vocalist to cover as necessary. This position requires some relatively high male vocal chops. All vocal tunes have lyric sheets (only). The time requirement (as of now) is NOT very demanding. We rehearse 2-3 nights before a gig. Currently gigging only 2x year at Dazzle. Pursuing more playing opportunities; recently recorded a demo.

Deja Blu is an established regional variety dance band. We have been together for over 10 years. We are a 5 piece band with a female lead singer. All 5 of us sing lead and backup vocals.
We work with a full time sound man. We have a business manager who handles all of the business side of booking, contracts, marketing, promotion and the web site.
We play about 30-40 shows per year. The money is very good - most of our shows are weddings, private and corporate with summer festivals thrown in.
We all have flexible day jobs that allow us to take mid-week gigs in the summer and a few out of state weddings that require long weekends.
What we are looking for:
We are looking for an experienced player who can cover a large variety of music and cover it well. Prior experience with a variety dance band is a plus.

Summer Course in the Alexander Technique at CU Boulder, 7/14

The 18th Annual Summer Course in the Alexander Technique at the University of Colorado at Boulder will be held July 9-13, 9:00 to noon daily. A one day Intensive will be held July 14, 1-5:00 pm. The 2012 faculty includes Ed Bilanchone, Amy Likar, and DMA member James Brody. Early registration by DMA members will result in a 15% reduction in tuition.
The Alexander Technique is a powerful tool for changing habits in movement and thinking. While anyone can benefit from this Technique, the work applies especially well to musicians and educators. Participants will learn about generalized and specific body use issues that can affect both performance and educational settings, as well as practical skills for the classroom. The results of a medical study in England that investigated the Alexander Technique were recently published in the British Medical Journal. April 17th is a big day. If a man and woman in Colorado both started working on January 1st of last year, it would take until April 17th of this year for the woman to earn as much as the man had earned by the end of last year. And if a regular working person and a huge bank or corporation started working on January 1st of last year, the corporation might never pay as much in taxes as a regular worker did last year, because companies like Wells Fargo and Verizon so often pay ZERO taxes. Meanwhile, local, state, and federal services are being slashed -- the U.S. House just voted out a budget that would cut Medicaid, teachers in Jefferson County and across Colorado are being forced to take furlough days when they should be teaching our children, and the U.S. Postal Service is under attack in Congress. Jobs with Justice and its members and allies aren't going to let this stand. - 9to5 Colorado is holding a rally at noon for Equal=Pay at the Auroria Campus Tivoli Commons. Join them as they work to close the pay gap in Colorado.
- At 3:30 PM, Colorado Progressive Coalition will be protesting Corporate Tax Dodger Wells Fargo, at their downtown location: 1740 Broadway.
- CPC will end their rally by marching to join a joint labor-community rally at 5 PM, demanding Tax Fairness outside the U.S. Postal Service at 20th & Curtis.

Our non-profit Mile High Community Band seeks musicians of all ages, teen through adult, and at all levels of accomplishment, to join us for rehearsals on Thursday nights in Edgewater (just west of Denver).
Our organization's mission is to provide rewarding music education and performance opportunities for youth and adults at all skill levels. We have various bands for different skill levels, beginning through advanced, including jazz/blues and concert bands. In particular, we welcome additional brass and woodwind musicians.
We meet Thursday evenings at North High School (2960 Speer Blvd Denver) for rehearsals. Monthly memberships begin at $25-$35/month, but we can waive fees and provide instruments for those who need them - no one with an interest in playing music will be turned away. Family discounts also available.

Description: Small pattern full-size cello. The back is two-piece maple, semi-slab cut with faint figure in the lower half. The ribs are similar the back with rather more curl and figure. The top is of spruce, two pieces, with rather wide, irregular grain widening away from the middle. The neck and pegbox are original crowned by a rather large volute. The varnish is reddish-brown
in color. Despite the presence of several well-mended cracks, the condition of the cello is good.

Fox Renard 240 (short bore) $6000. Purchased new from Fox in 1995.
Mechanism: 18% nickel silver keys with silver plating. Full German system with High D and E keys. Ring key for wing joint third finger hole. Right hand whisper lock. Rollers on F, Ab, Eb, Db, right thumb Bb and F#, in combination with a crowned E key. Bb Guard. Metal tubes extending into the bore in the finger holes of the wing and boot joints to prevent water from entering the tone holes. All posts are set with epoxy and spring posts are locked with screws.
Body: Red Maple, selected for tone quality, naturally aged in our own facilities. Natural rubber linings in the wing joint and small bore of the boot joint. French bell (metal ring). Body Lock. Complete re-pad and service done by Fox summer 2010. Accessories:Fine plush-lined case (original).

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!
