CSO boss Sobczak confident of better times ahead
Denver Business Journal

Despite a working capital deficit of more than $1.2 million to start its fiscal year July 1, the Colorado Symphony Orchestra predicts it will finish 2012 with a balanced budget.

Gene Sobczak, CSO president and CEO, said Friday the orchestra's new business plan, supported by musicians, has helped cut the deficit by more than half as new concerts and operational changes bring in new revenue to the CSO.

Colorado Symphony Orchestra officials released audited financial statements for its 2011 fiscal year on Friday and it contains revelations about the serious financial challenges faced by the orchestra.

Conducted by Eide Bailly LLP, the audit notes said that the city of Denver took initial action in January to revoke the symphony's Boettcher Concert Hall lease because of non-payment of rent. A repayment plan has been worked out and it's no longer an issue, Sobczak said.

According to the audit, the CSO finished its fiscal year on June 30 with revenues from performances of $5.94 million, contributions of $4.48 million and $824,216 in proceeds from its share of the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District tax. Total revenues, including all sources, was $13.8 million.

Louisville Orchestra to hire replacement musicians
Elizabeth Kramer
The Courier-Journal
April 5, 2012

Louisville Orchestra Inc. will begin hiring musicians this month to replace those who have been enmeshed in contentious negotiations with the organization for nearly a year, orchestra CEO Robert Birman said Thursday.

"We declared that negotiations were over a long time ago'" Birman said. "If the players want to make a proposal, they have that option, but we are at an impasse."

Birman said orchestra management will start hiring musicians in April and May, "and the goal would be to have an orchestra by September."

Birman's comments came on the same day the Louisville Orchestra Musicians' Association held a press conference on the steps of the Kentucky Center, calling for both sides to work with an arbitrator who also is an orchestra industry professional to break the impasse.

Under the musicians' proposal, which they sent to orchestra management last week, the arbitrator would make binding recommendations concerning the musicians' contract and management of the organization.

Urgent petition to support Louisville

FROM: Bruce Ridge, ICSOM Chair
SUBJECT: urgent petition to support Louisville

Dear friends and colleagues,

As you might have read in the Louisville Courier-Journal article posted to Orchestra-L this evening, the management of the Louisville Orchestra has announced that they intend to immediately hire a replacement orchestra and that they will no longer negotiate with the members of the Louisville Orchestra Musicians Association (LOMA).

This evening, the LOMA has established an on-line petition that will allow you to demonstrate your support for the musicians of this great and historic orchestra. It is very important that musicians everywhere sign this petition in a display of solidarity, and to demonstrate to the leaders of the city of Louisville that the musicians of the LOMA have support from across the world.

Please forward the petition link to everyone you know, and post it on your Facebook pages, etc. We must spread the word through our united network of friends to every member of ICSOM, the entire AFM, and beyond.

The petition can be found at:

in solidarity,
Bruce Ridge

Melbourne brain study: Are musicians born or made?
Neil McLachlan
Associate Professor Neil McLachlan's new musical instruments will help to increase music participation.

By Lieu Thi Pham | April 4, 2012

MELBOURNE - Neil McLachlan says he wants to do for music what Apple did for the personal computer. For over two decades, the scientist, artist and university professor has worked to increase music participation.

"Only five per cent of people (in the West) who go through tertiary music education end up playing music," the University of Melbourne associate professor said. "On the whole, music education has created an elitism around music performance that has caused the normal person to feel that they can't play," he said.

McLachlan works in a multidisciplinary team at the university's Music, Mind and Wellbeing (MMW) Center, an initiative that aims to understand the relationship between our brains and music.

Deja Blu is an established regional variety dance band.  We have been together for over 10 years. We are a 5 piece band  with a female lead singer. All 5 of us sing lead and backup vocals.

We work with a full time sound man. We have a business manager who handles all of the business side of booking, contracts, marketing, promotion and the web site.
We play about 30-40 shows per year. The money is very good - most of our shows are weddings, private and corporate with summer festivals thrown in.

We all have flexible day jobs that allow us to take mid-week gigs in the summer and a few out of state weddings that require long weekends.

What we are looking for:

We are looking for an experienced player who can cover a large variety of music and cover it well. Prior experience with a variety dance band is a plus.

We would like for you to be able to sing lead on a few songs and cover some vocal harmonies.

You must have pro gear, formal attire, reliable transportation for mountain travel and a great attitude

We are asking for a 100% commitment to the band so, please - No guns for hire or guys who play in multiple bands. It just would not work for us.

Summer Course in the Alexander Technique at CU Boulder, 7/14
James Brody
James Brody
The 18th Annual Summer Course in the Alexander Technique at the University of Colorado at Boulder will be held July 9-13, 9:00 to noon daily. A one day Intensive will be held July 14, 1-5:00 pm. The 2012 faculty includes Ed Bilanchone, Amy Likar, and DMA member James Brody. Early registration by DMA members will result in a 15% reduction in tuition.

The Alexander Technique is a powerful tool for changing habits in movement and thinking. While anyone can benefit from this Technique, the work applies especially well to musicians and educators. Participants will learn about generalized and specific body use issues that can affect both performance and educational settings, as well as practical skills for the classroom. The results of a medical study in England that investigated the Alexander Technique were recently published in the British Medical Journal. A link to a summary of the study and a short film about it can be found at http://www.bmj.com/content/337/bmj.a884 For more information about the Course and the Alexander Technique in general, please consult the following web site: (http://music.colorado.edu/departments/wellness/) or contact DMA member James Brody (brody@colorado.edu).

Add your act to the AFM's new booking service
AFM Entertainment Logo
With the approaching public launch of AFM Entertainment, now is the time to add your musical act to the AFM's new booking service.

We will be booking gigs for all genres, from classical to jazz to hip-hop to rock. And every job will pay at least the appropriate local scale wages and benefits.

To participate, you'll need a solid, engaging electronic press kit. That means a well-written bio, at least one professional-grade photograph, and either great-sounding audio or a decent video.

As AFM President Ray Hair wrote, "When we work together and book that job, we will have partly answered that age-old question, 'What does the union do for me?'"

They Had Their Hands on the Freedom Plow
April 5, 2012

A new book, Hands on the Freedom Plow, tells the stories of 52 women who joined the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in the early 1960s to combat the blatant and pervasive racism and injustice that infected the South. Three of those women told their stories yesterday in an AFL-CIO forum in Washington, D.C.

Even Grosser Than Pink Slime
I hope you don't mind a little salmonella and E. coli in your chicken. Because if the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) gets its way, chicken contaminated with disease, feathers and other really disgusting stuff could be on its way to your dinner plate within the year.

We count on USDA inspectors to help us keep our families safe and healthy. But the USDA wants to save money by throwing about 1,000 of them out of work.

Hurry: Sign our petition against the "dirty chicken" rule today, and tell the USDA inspectors they can count on us, too:

About 3,000 Americans die from food-borne illnesses each year. But instead of doing more to protect our families, the USDA is taking budget cuts out on the inspectors we need. Not only would about 1,000 get the boot-the inspectors who keep their jobs would be told to inspect 175 chickens per minute. That's more than three chickens per second!

Working people like us, and like USDA inspectors, take pride in our work. We work hard and make a difference. USDA's "dirty chicken" rule would take that away while endangering our families.

Right-Wing Union Sting Exposed
April 4, 2012

Peek into the dirty tricks of the right-wing activists who stitch together phony "exposés" and doctored videos and then peddle their "investigations" to the Fox News and Drudge Report arm of the media. This "anatomy of a political sting" centers on the elaborate scheme of a fake union organizer.

SAG/AFTRA Merger Means Stronger Voice
April 2, 2012

Members of the Screen Actors (SAG) and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) overwhelmingly approved--by more than 80 percent--merging their unions into one, SAG/AFTRA. The merger gives the workers a more powerful voice in dealing with a changing industry, especially in emerging areas of work, say union leaders. AFTRA has some 70,000 members in the entertainment and news industries, while SAG represents about 125,000 actors.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
