In Europe, Where Art Is Life, Ax Falls on Public Financing
| By LARRY ROHTER New York Times Published: March 24, 2012 European governments are cutting their support for culture, and American arts lovers are starting to feel the results. In Italy, the world-famous opera house La Scala faces a $9 million shortfall because of reductions in subsidies. In the Netherlands, government financing for arts programs has been cut by 25 percent. Portugal has abolished its Ministry of Culture. Europe's economic problems, and the austerity programs meant to address them, are forcing arts institutions there to curtail programs, tours and grants. As a result, some ensembles are scaling down their productions and trying to raise money from private donors, some in the United States, potentially putting them in competition with American arts organizations. For Americans used to seeing the best and most adventuresome European culture on tour in this country, the belt-tightening is beginning to affect both the quantity and quality of arts exchanges. At least three European troupes that were expected to perform in January at the Under the Radar theater festival in New York, for example, had to withdraw as they could not afford the travel costs, and the organizers could not either. Much uncertainty amid Kimmel Center's lease talks with orchestra
| March 26, 2012 By Peter Dobrin, Inquirer Culture Writer
Each spring for the last decade, Philadelphia's largest performing arts importer has unveiled what's in store for next season: world music, jazz, superstar pianist Lang Lang, or, when times were flush, the widely worshipped Vienna Philharmonic.
So far this spring, however, except for announcing its lucrative Broadway series, the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts has been silent on plans for 2012-13. The Kimmel has a season penciled in, leaders say, but for now, completion of its own presentations must wait as negotiations over a new lease agreement between the Kimmel and its largest tenant, the Philadelphia Orchestra, reach a critical point.
What's at stake, according to several sources who have been briefed on the talks, is the question of whether the Kimmel can continue as a full-fledged arts center with an artistically independent presenting arm, or whether it will be reduced to being a rental facility for resident companies while letting its halls on open nights to commercial entities such as Live Nation.
Philadelphia Orchestra president Allison B. Vulgamore has made her preferences known. Read On

Louisville Orchestra to send musicians new contract offer
| Elizabeth Kramer Louisville Courier-Journal March 26, 2012
The Louisville Orchestra's board of directors voted in executive session on Monday to send its musicians a new offer under which the two sides could agree to a new contact, according to board president Chuck Maisch. The musicians have not had a contract since last June and haven't performed together as the Louisville Orchestra since last April.
"It's going to be very similar to the last offer. We're just going to make it very, very clear - to clarify exactly what it is going to take," Maish said, referring to the terms under which management believes it can employ the musicians and not exceed its budget projections. He has said the orchestra has to keep its budget under approximately $5.3 million. Read On

Summer Course in the Alexander Technique at CU Boulder, 7/14
|
 | James Brody |
The 18th Annual Summer Course in the Alexander Technique at the University of Colorado at Boulder will be held July 9-13, 9:00 to noon daily. A one day Intensive will be held July 14, 1-5:00 pm. The 2012 faculty includes Ed Bilanchone, Amy Likar, and DMA member James Brody. Early registration by DMA members will result in a 15% reduction in tuition.
The Alexander Technique is a powerful tool for changing habits in movement and thinking. While anyone can benefit from this Technique, the work applies especially well to musicians and educators. Participants will learn about generalized and specific body use issues that can affect both performance and educational settings, as well as practical skills for the classroom. The results of a medical study in England that investigated the Alexander Technique were recently published in the British Medical Journal. A link to a summary of the study and a short film about it can be found at http://www.bmj.com/content/337/bmj.a884 For more information about the Course and the Alexander Technique in general, please consult the following web site: (http://music.colorado.edu/departments/wellness/) or contact DMA member James Brody (brody@colorado.edu).

The 50th Anniversary celebration of the Denver Folklore Center
| As of last Tuesday, March 13th, the Denver Folklore Center marks 50 years since the opening of the little shop at 608 East 17th Avenue. To celebrate the occasion I have enlisted the aid of the Swallow Hill Music Association to produce a week-end of events over the Memorial Day week-end, May 25 - 27 (Friday to Sunday), with concerts, a documenting event, and a Sunday evening party/get-together. Tickets are available from Swallow Hill through their web site, www.swallowhillmusic.com, as well as some information at www.denverfolklore.com. For those of you from outside of Denver who contemplate coming, I will be sending a separate e-mail with information and questions about lodging, etc. Please feel free to write me directly at this address, denverfolklore@gmail.com (please delete denfolk@msn.com and use the one noted - thanks). I've waited 50 years to celebrate the naive and probably rash idea of starting a business when I hadn't a clue how to do such a thing (even now I'm not sure I know anything). I hope you will come help me celebrate. I've chosen that week-end specifically so that there would be a full week-end of "partying," with a travel Monday at the end. Let me know how I can help make a way for you to come. All the best to you. Specific information follows:
50th Anniversary of the Denver Folklore Center in 2012:
Make your plans for this Memorial Day Weekend of exceptional music from Friday through Sunday! Tickets are available through Swallow Hill for any or all performances.

In a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder, Rep. Join Us on the Picket Line FRIDAY at 1 PM
| Support Our Sisters on Strike. At 8 AM last Thursday, eight UFCW members who work as barbers at Buckley Air Force Base made a difficult decision. They went out on strike against their employer -- Gina Morena Enterprises, a huge and highly profitable company with over 400 shops nationwide. These workers decided to go on strike because Gina Morena is demanding that they take a pay cut for the third straight contract. The barbers already have gone from 70% commisions to 60% commissions, and Gina Morena wants to cut that further. Unsurprisingly, given the company's greed, these workers also do not receive health care, pensions, paid sick days, or paid vacations, and their pay is barely enough to support a family as it is. Join Them on the Picket Line FRIDAY, 1 PM BUCKLEY AIR FORCE BASE. Eight workers against a huge greedy corporation. It's going to be a tough fight, so we need to move quickly. UFCW Local 7 is already mobilizing to stand by their members; Local 7 President Kim Cordova said "every member of Local 7 deserves respect and fairness from their company" and we at Jobs with Justice couldn't agree more. So join us at 1 PM this Friday at Buckley Air Force Base and let's show Gina Morena Enterprises what solidarity is all about. We'll be at 6th Avenue & Aspen in Aurora; from I-70 take Airport Rd south to 6th and turn left, then we'll be at the second light, or take 6th Avenue all the way out from the city.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
