Flying with Musical Instruments

Dear AFM Members,

Following the passage of the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012 (H.R. 658), we have been receiving many questions about the new policy and complaints that musicians are still experiencing problems at the airport. While the inclusion of a national musical instrument policy in the FAA bill is a major victory for AFM, musicians must be aware that changes will not happen immediately, and we ask for your patience.

The FAA reauthorization was signed into law by the President on February 14, 2012. However, the national instrument policy goes into effect upon issuance of FAA regulations to carry out the law, which must occur no later than February 2014. AFM is working with Congress, the FAA, and the airlines to get these regulations in place as soon as possible, and to encourage airlines that have not already done so to voluntarily adopt H.R. 658 as their policy in the meantime. This means that you may continue to face difficulties at the airport until the new procedures are fully rolled out.

In particular, please remember that flight attendants, gate attendants, and baggage handlers may not yet be aware of the new law. Often, they don't know the airline's own policy on musical instruments. In order for the carry-on policy to be effective, it is imperative that it be included in the FAA training manuals distributed to airline employees. As many of you have no doubt experienced, even airlines like United and Delta, which already have favorable musical instrument policies, frequently cause problems for musicians because the airline employees are unaware of the policy and refuse to allow the instrument on board. To address this issue, AFM is working to ensure that training manuals are updated as soon as possible.

Musicians who travel with their instruments are advised to visit the AFM website, where they can find the text of the law, links to major airlines' current musical instrument policies, and updated travel tips at  http://www.afm.org/member/page/id/1705. I recommend that you carry both the airline's current policy on musical instruments and a copy of the law when you fly.

Best,

Hal Ponder

Beethoven
Beethoven's Eroica Revealed
Fri, March 23, 7:30 PM - tickets

Beethoven's masterpiece is deconstructed in front of your eyes with stunning visuals, musical sound bytes and clever anecdotes, including revealing information about the composer's relationship with Napoleon, to whom the symphony was originally dedicated. Heroism and an idealized vision of redemption through love permeate the great master's work. Then hear the entire "Eroica" with a renewed understanding and appreciation for the art that was and will always be Beethoven.

Sat, March 24, 7:30 PM - tickets
Sun, March 25, 2:30 PM - tickets

KODALY / Dances of Galánta
HAYDN / Symphony No. 22, "The Philosopher"
BEETHOVEN / Symphony No. 3, "Eroica"

Haydn's charming symphony employs a muted tick-tock effect, evoking the image of a philosopher deep in thought while time passes by; and Kodaly's dances are a deeply personal homage to the place where he lived as a toddler with his family. Both are a prelude to the main work on the program: Beethoven's heroic symphony which was first dedicated to Napoleon, after which the disillusioned composer scratched his dedication off the work's title page.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The 50th Anniversary celebration of the Denver Folklore Center
As of last Tuesday, March 13th, the Denver Folklore Center marks 50 years since the opening of the little shop at 608 East 17th Avenue.  To  celebrate the occasion I have enlisted the aid of the Swallow Hill Music Association to produce a week-end of events over the Memorial Day week-end, May 25 - 27 (Friday to Sunday), with concerts, a documenting event, and a Sunday evening party/get-together.  Tickets are available from Swallow Hill through their web site,  www.swallowhillmusic.com, as well as some information at www.denverfolklore.com.

For those of you from outside of Denver who contemplate coming, I will be sending a separate e-mail with information and questions about lodging, etc.  Please feel free to write me directly at this address, denverfolklore@gmail.com (please delete denfolk@msn.com and use the one noted - thanks).

I've waited 50 years to celebrate the naive and probably rash idea of starting a business when I hadn't a clue how to do such a thing (even now I'm not sure I know anything).  I hope you will come help me celebrate.  I've chosen that week-end specifically so that there would be a full week-end of "partying," with a travel Monday at the end.  Let me know how I can help make a way for you to come.  All the best to you.  Specific information follows:

Workshop for Recreational Instrumental Musicians, 3/24
A workshop targeting adults whose avocation is instrumental music is being offered through the Colorado Music Festival and Rocky Mountain Center for Musical Arts. Hands-on injury prevention training will be coupled with new brain-based strategies in music learning. Teachers of adult musicians are welcome to attend at a reduced rate.

The instructors, Carolyn Kuban, neurologic music therapist, harpist, and music medicine practitioner, and Kim Nelson, Pilates and dance kinesiology practitioner, together bring over twenty years of knowledge and experience in their fields.  Carolyn has given this workshop to harpists for the past 8 years and is now opening it up to all instrumental musicians.

The goal in this workshop is to help musicians approach playing their instruments with new understanding, whether in the areas of memorizing and sightreading, mental focus and attention, alleviating posture, tendonitis, or carpel tunnel issues, increasing endurance and relaxation, or aging issues and playing--and much more.

The workshop will be held at RMCMA, 200 E. Baseline Rd., Lafayette, on Sat. March 24 from 1:00-5:30 PM. Participants need to bring yoga mats or blankets for movement participation. For a registration form, contact Carolyn Kuban, at 303-499-0229,  kubanks@qwest.net, or go online

Add your act to the AFM's new booking service
AFM Entertainment Logo
With the approaching public launch of AFM Entertainment, now is the time to add your musical act to the AFM's new booking service.

We will be booking gigs for all genres, from classical to jazz to hip-hop to rock. And every job will pay at least the appropriate local scale wages and benefits.

To participate, you'll need a solid, engaging electronic press kit. That means a well-written bio, at least one professional-grade photograph, and either great-sounding audio or a decent video.

As AFM President Ray Hair wrote, "When we work together and book that job, we will have partly answered that age-old question, 'What does the union do for me?'"

Arizona Activism Derails Minimum Wage Repeal
March 22, 2012

Thanks to growing pressure from Arizona working families, extreme right-wing lawmakers backed off efforts to repeal the state's minimum wage law. Even the high-powered Arizona Restaurant Association, which lobbied hard for the bill, saw it was overwhelmingly opposed by voters. But other bills attacking Arizona working families are still on the extremists' agenda.

Help Send a Strong Message to Verizon
There's something happening this week, and it's big: Verizon-one of the greediest companies in America-will be getting an earful from people all over the country.

For months, Verizon workers have been struggling for a fair contract. These workers just want a decent middle-class life. But as they've tried to protect health care, retirement and even benefits for job-related injuries, they've had to listen to Verizon claim it has no money for these basic protections.

Verizon workers have seen the company rake in billions of dollars in the past four years while paying top executives $283 million. And it just keeps getting worse: Verizon recently tripled the compensation of its CEO, Lowell McAdam-from $7.2 million to $23.1 million A YEAR.

This treatment is unfair, insulting and wrong. That's why, this week, those of us who've had enough of Verizon's greed are coming together to rally and tell the company: It's time to treat workers right and negotiate a fair contract now.

Click the following link to find a Thursday rally near you:
http://local.americawantstowork.org

This Thursday, union allies, clergy, academics, community leaders and more of us will make our voices heard all over America. Standing side by side, we can send a strong message to Verizon and CEO Lowell McAdam: We're not going to stand by as you take advantage of hard-working men and women and destroy the middle class.

In Solidarity,

Manny Herrmann

Republicans Want to Silence Safety Whistle-Blowers
March 16, 2012

House Republicans want to cut the part of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration budget that protects workers who blow the whistle on job safety violations and increase money to let employers voluntarily enforce workplace safety standards. Just more proof of where they stand on workplace safety--and it's not with workers.

EFCU donating to Labor's Community Agency

LCA Logo By Ed Knox

DMA member and President of IBEW Local 68

Hey everyone,

I just received the following message from Electrical Federal Credit Union:  "For every new member/account we bring in (to the Electrical Federal Credit Union) EFCU will - for the next three months - donate $5.00 to LCA."

There will never be a better time to join the Electrical Federal Credit Union!

With the exciting news regarding EFCU's generous donation to LCA, every Unionist should consider at least a one-time contribution.  Labor's Community Agency, as the Community Services Arm of the Colorado AFL-CIO, is supported by direct donations, grants and foundations. LCA is a nonprofit, charitable organization with a 501(c)(3) designation of our tax code. Your donations, as always, are tax deductible.

Looking for an easy way to donate to LCA?  LCA is now set up to accept donations directly out of your checking or savings account.  Please click
LCA-ACH-Form.pdf to download an ACH form today.

Click DONATE TO LCA to make donations on-line safely and securely through PayPal.

We appreciate direct donations. Please make checks or money orders payable to:

Labor's Community Agency

When you join EFCU you might consider asking them to accept your monthly AUTOMATIC DONATION to LCA, in the amount of $20 or so. (LCA-ACH-Form.pdf)  Those funds will then be channeled through EFCU to LCA, via the ACH (Automatic Clearing House) method, with EFCU charging NO FEE for transacting this business.  Please take the time to call the folks at EFCU and thank them for their generosity.  303-428-5080.

Without our collective help, LCA is not gonna be around to help any of us.

Fraternally,

Ed Knox

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
