DENVER -- Longtime Arapahoe Philharmonic conductor Vincent LaGuardia has died after collapsing during a concert in front of an audience and his wife, who was playing violin in the orchestra at a suburban church.

His wife of 25 years, Tracy LaGuardia, said her husband died at a hospital Friday night following an apparent heart attack at Mission Hills Church in Littleton, south of Denver. He was 68.

The orchestra was two-thirds of the way into its first piece of the concert, "Bach's Toccata and  Fugue," when LaGuardia collapsed, Tracy LaGuardia, the orchestra's concertmaster, said.

"He was doing what he loved," a tearful Tracy LaGuardia told The Associated Press on Saturday. "All (of) a sudden I looked up and he leaned into the front stand and he fell onto his nose ... he never came to."

Magic returns as Hawaii Symphony Orchestra takes stage
Pacific Business News

Monday, March 5, 2012

Musicians rarely get a standing ovation before they sit down to play.

But it happened at the Neal Blaisdell Concert Hall Sunday afternoon when the
Hawaii Symphony Orchestra took the stage for the first time.

Symphony musicians usually are in their seats tuning up as concertgoers file
into the hall. But in this case the seats on the stage were empty at 4 p.m.
as the concert was scheduled to begin. Then, from offstage, a voice
announced: "Ladies and gentlemen, the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra."

The approximately 2,000 concertgoers leaped to their feet as the musicians
filed onto the stage. The chemistry between the musicians and the audience
was immediate and the message was clear: "You've been away too long, and
we're thrilled to have you back."

Louisville Ballet Review: 'Cinderella' charmed and sparkled....(but something was missing!)
"Foregoing live music was a decision made by the company and is not due to the current impasse in contract negotiations between the Louisville Orchestra and its musicians. It felt abnormal to sit through recorded overtures. This ballet does not rise to its full potential without live music."

Written by Elizabeth Kramer The Courier-Journal
March 10, 2012

For decades "Cinderella," choreographed by former artistic director Alun Jones and former associate artistic director Helen Starr, has been a jewel in the Louisville Ballet's repertoire, and Friday night it dazzled and charmed while also coaxing laughs.

Beethoven
Beethoven's Eroica Revealed
Fri, March 23, 7:30 PM - tickets

Beethoven's masterpiece is deconstructed in front of your eyes with stunning visuals, musical sound bytes and clever anecdotes, including revealing information about the composer's relationship with Napoleon, to whom the symphony was originally dedicated. Heroism and an idealized vision of redemption through love permeate the great master's work. Then hear the entire "Eroica" with a renewed understanding and appreciation for the art that was and will always be Beethoven.

Workshop for Recreational Instrumental Musicians, 3/24
A workshop targeting adults whose avocation is instrumental music is being offered through the Colorado Music Festival and Rocky Mountain Center for Musical Arts. Hands-on injury prevention training will be coupled with new brain-based strategies in music learning. Teachers of adult musicians are welcome to attend at a reduced rate.

The instructors, Carolyn Kuban, neurologic music therapist, harpist, and music medicine practitioner, and Kim Nelson, Pilates and dance kinesiology practitioner, together bring over twenty years of knowledge and experience in their fields.  Carolyn has given this workshop to harpists for the past 8 years and is now opening it up to all instrumental musicians.

The goal in this workshop is to help musicians approach playing their instruments with new understanding, whether in the areas of memorizing and sightreading, mental focus and attention, alleviating posture, tendonitis, or carpel tunnel issues, increasing endurance and relaxation, or aging issues and playing--and much more.

The workshop will be held at RMCMA, 200 E. Baseline Rd., Lafayette, on Sat. March 24 from 1:00-5:30 PM. Participants need to bring yoga mats or blankets for movement participation. For a registration form, contact Carolyn Kuban, at 303-499-0229,  kubanks@qwest.net, or go online

Trumka: On the Endorsement of Barack Obama for a Second Term as President
Statement by Richard Trumka
President, AFL-CIO
On the Endorsement of Barack Obama for a Second Term as President
March 13, 2012

As president, Barack Obama has placed his faith in America's working men and women to lead our country to economic recovery and to our full potential as a nation.  With our endorsement today, we affirm our faith in him-and pledge to work with him through the election and his second term to restore fairness, security and shared prosperity.

The coming election is about values.  President Obama honors the values of hard work, of mutual respect, and of solving problems together-not every person for himself or herself.  He believes that together we will get through the most challenging economic crisis in memory and restore opportunity for all.  Each of the Republican presidential candidates, on the other hand, has pledged to uphold the special privileges of Wall Street and the 1%--privileges that have produced historic economic inequality and drowned out the voices of working people in America.

President Obama took America from the brink of a second Great Depression by pressing Congress to pass the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which saved or created 3.6 million jobs.  He championed comprehensive health insurance reform, which -- while far from perfect -- set the nation on a path toward health security that had eluded our country for nearly 100 years.  He insisted upon Wall Street reform-passed over the objection of almost every Republican-that is now beginning to reverse decades of financial deregulation that put our entire economy at risk.

Although the labor movement has sometimes differed with the president and often pushed his administration to do more and do it faster, we have never doubted his commitment to working families.  He has worked hard to create good jobs; he has made the revival of the manufacturing sector a hallmark of his jobs agenda; he has moved aggressively to protect workers' rights, pay and health and safety on the job; he has worked for a fair resolution of the housing crisis and he put his confidence and administration unequivocally behind the workers and companies in the American auto industry-a move that saved hundreds of thousands of jobs and is helping to revive the economy now and for the future.

President Obama has earned the support of working people for a second term and today the AFL-CIO voted proudly and enthusiastically to endorse him for a second term.

The labor movement is the original social network-a working class social network-and this year the unions of the AFL-CIO will be mobilizing working people to come together to organize our neighborhoods door to door, powered by cutting-edge technology and old-fashioned energy. We will be running an independent program rooted not in parties or candidates but in helping working people build power, making informed decisions about which candidates at every level to work for based on records and issues.

EFCU donating to Labor's Community Agency

LCA Logo By Ed Knox

DMA member and President of IBEW Local 68

Hey everyone,

I just received the following message from Electrical Federal Credit Union:  "For every new member/account we bring in (to the Electrical Federal Credit Union) EFCU will - for the next three months - donate $5.00 to LCA."

There will never be a better time to join the Electrical Federal Credit Union!

With the exciting news regarding EFCU's generous donation to LCA, every Unionist should consider at least a one-time contribution.  Labor's Community Agency, as the Community Services Arm of the Colorado AFL-CIO, is supported by direct donations, grants and foundations. LCA is a nonprofit, charitable organization with a 501(c)(3) designation of our tax code. Your donations, as always, are tax deductible.

Looking for an easy way to donate to LCA?  LCA is now set up to accept donations directly out of your checking or savings account.  Please click
LCA-ACH-Form.pdf to download an ACH form today.

Click DONATE TO LCA to make donations on-line safely and securely through PayPal.

We appreciate direct donations. Please make checks or money orders payable to:

Labor's Community Agency

When you join EFCU you might consider asking them to accept your monthly AUTOMATIC DONATION to LCA, in the amount of $20 or so. (LCA-ACH-Form.pdf)  Those funds will then be channeled through EFCU to LCA, via the ACH (Automatic Clearing House) method, with EFCU charging NO FEE for transacting this business.  Please take the time to call the folks at EFCU and thank them for their generosity.  303-428-5080.

Without our collective help, LCA is not gonna be around to help any of us.

Fraternally,

Ed Knox

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
