The Hawaii Symphony Orchestra will launch its inaugural season this weekend at the Neal S. Blaisdell Concert Hall in Honolulu.

The orchestra's debut performance, set for 4 p.m. on Sun. March 4, will mark the return of symphonic music to Oahu after a quiet stretch of about two years.

About a year ago, the 110-year-old Honolulu Symphony folded. Prior to its liquidation due to debt-related matters, the symphony operated under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for about a year and cancelled all of its concerts.

In the aftermath of the liquidation a group of Hawaii business leaders announced their intention to bring back the music. Among the group's members: Oswald Stender, an Office of Hawaiian Affairs trustee who is now serving as director of the new Board of the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra.

In a recent news release issued by the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra, Stender said: "It is our belief that having a symphony orchestra organization in Hawaii is critical to the state's artistic and economic vitality." He continued, "We are all thrilled to be making the dream of a new orchestra a reality."

Canadian Band Rush Tells Limbaugh To Stop Using Their Music

Justice Through Music

By CR - Posted on 07 March 2012

MAR 7, 2012 - The Canadian rock trio Rush, whose songs were being used by talk show host Rush Limbaugh as "bumpers" for his show, has received a letter from Rush's management demanding that Limbaugh immediately stop using any of the band's music in his show. The letter points out how using their music in a political show is a copyright infringement, and more importantly the band does not want people to assume that the band endorses or supports the hateful rhetoric Limbaugh engages in.

Phila. Orchestra gives new contract to Allison Vulgamore
Peter Dobrin
February 29, 2012

The Philadelphia Orchestra Association has signed on president and CEO
Allison B. Vulgamore for another three years. Vulgamore, who took the helm
of the troubled orchestra with an initial two-year contract starting in
2010, will remain its leader through Dec. 31, 2014, according to a proposed
deal filed Wednesday and subject to approval by U.S. Bankruptcy Court.

"We have a contract and we're delighted," said orchestra chairman Richard B.
Worley. "We thought it was a fair and reasonable contract that gives us a
chance of keeping her for three years and working productively."

An orchestra spokeswoman said Vulgamore was unavailable for comment.

The terms of the new three-year pact are similar to the one that is
expiring. Vulgamore will earn an annual base salary of $450,000 - but with a
list of extras that sweeten the deal considerably:

Beethoven's masterpiece is deconstructed in front of your eyes with stunning visuals, musical sound bytes and clever anecdotes, including revealing information about the composer's relationship with Napoleon, to whom the symphony was originally dedicated. Even though our concerts are normally on Tuesday, please note that this concert will be held on MONDAY, March 12th, at 7:30 p.m.

Mort Mann Obituary

MusicPage - A NEW WAY for musicians to network
MusicPage LogoBy David Codr, Founder of Musicpage

"Its not what you know. It's who you know"

Luckily for independent musicians, it just got a whole lot easier to find people to know in the music business.

Musicpage.com is the first online community built specifically for musicians and music professionals. The international community already features tens of thousands of music industry profiles from 40+ categories.

Unlike social networking sites, Musicpage profiles feature detailed contact information. Phone numbers are required for every profile. The profiles also include addresses, company personnel contacts, production specs, call times and other useful data.  "We call it an industry networking site," said Musicpage founder David Codr.

The profiles are organized by category and state which gives users the ability to browse and manipulate contacts as they need.
David Codr
David Codr

"Musicians usually only know what they are looking for, they just dont know the who part," Codr explains.  "Musicpage is the only community that lets users browse contacts by category and location. This makes it much easier for then to easily find the contacts they need; live music venues in Nebraska, promoters in California, Sound reinforcement in Chicago. We are built to give musicians options."

Those options are fairly comprehensive. With over 40 industry categories, a musician would be hard pressed to name a industry type that Musicpage doesnt already feature.

Something else that is incredibly useful is Musicpage's online notes feature. Any user can add their own private online notes to any profile in the community. This is a true game changer as Musicpage users dont just view the data in the profiles, they add their own notes to them.

For a group of people who work in multiple markets at the same time but don't have an office, giving users the ability to store their own reminders and online notes to the profiles is a stroke of genius.

Although Musicpage only launched last year, the list of contacts is impressive. There are over 5,000 live music venue profiles alone - complete with detailed booking and production information; genres booked, capacity, music format, days they have music, age requirements, sound specs, lights, dressing rooms - even the average age of the crowd. You can view one of their venue profiles here https://www.musicpage.com/waitingroom

Some of the other more notable profile categories include; producers, promoters, agents, managers, record labels, tour managers, entertainment attorneys, distributors, music publishers and of course band profiles.

While its free to create a business or band profile, you have to have a personal profile (also free) to create those types of profiles. "We wanted to make sure the profiles in the community were legit, and our users are real," explains Codr. A lot of social networking sites include incomplete or fake profiles. We have a more elaborate signup process that helps us filter out the pretenders."

Musicpage's band / solo performer group profiles are free to create and become a de facto Electronic Press Kit as all the artist's contacts (agent, manager, publicist, tour manager) profiles are displayed as clickable links.

Bands can upload their songs, press photos, bio, tour dates along with detailed performance and production specs (Average draw, CD's released, CDs sold, etc) to the profile which essentially adds them to a section of the community that is frequently viewed by promoters, talent buyers and other music pros who are looking for up and coming artists.

"We like to say having a Musicpage puts you in the right place. At the right time. All the time," said Codr.

In addition to the industry profiles, Musicpage has a number of user features designed to help musicians with their careers.

Gig Swapping - Users who are linked to a band or solo performer profile can post Gig Swap's in the markets they are looking to play in. Bands in that market see the post, which is linked to your band profile so they can check you out. If you like what you hear, you contact the band directly and work out the trade details. A great way to get into a new market you haven't played in before.

Industry Classifieds - Lets users post ads for bands or musicians wanted, Announcements, gear or instruments for sale, etc. Bnefit being that the posts are all music industry related and specific to your community.

SID - The Stolen Instrument Database or S.I.D. allows users to create a stolen instrument report complete with photos, description, key data like; serial number, finish, police report number, reward details and the owner's contact information. The post stays on the Musicpage system until you get your gear back.

Final analysis: In the Facebook age, is there a need for a community like Musicpage? Not if you are looking for fan promotion or exposure. Facebook is the undisputed king there.

But if you are a musician looking for an industry contact, or exposure to the music industry, a Musicpage may be just the ticket you're looking for.

Workshop for Recreational Instrumental Musicians, 3/24
A workshop targeting adults whose avocation is instrumental music is being offered through the Colorado Music Festival and Rocky Mountain Center for Musical Arts. Hands-on injury prevention training will be coupled with new brain-based strategies in music learning. Teachers of adult musicians are welcome to attend at a reduced rate.

The instructors, Carolyn Kuban, neurologic music therapist, harpist, and music medicine practitioner, and Kim Nelson, Pilates and dance kinesiology practitioner, together bring over twenty years of knowledge and experience in their fields.  Carolyn has given this workshop to harpists for the past 8 years and is now opening it up to all instrumental musicians.

The goal in this workshop is to help musicians approach playing their instruments with new understanding, whether in the areas of memorizing and sightreading, mental focus and attention, alleviating posture, tendonitis, or carpel tunnel issues, increasing endurance and relaxation, or aging issues and playing--and much more.

The workshop will be held at RMCMA, 200 E. Baseline Rd., Lafayette, on Sat. March 24 from 1:00-5:30 PM. Participants need to bring yoga mats or blankets for movement participation. For a registration form, contact Carolyn Kuban, at 303-499-0229,  kubanks@qwest.net, or go online

AFM Entertainment Logo
With the approaching public launch of AFM Entertainment, now is the time to add your musical act to the AFM's new booking service.

We will be booking gigs for all genres, from classical to jazz to hip-hop to rock. And every job will pay at least the appropriate local scale wages and benefits.

To participate, you'll need a solid, engaging electronic press kit. That means a well-written bio, at least one professional-grade photograph, and either great-sounding audio or a decent video.

As AFM President Ray Hair wrote, "When we work together and book that job, we will have partly answered that age-old question, 'What does the union do for me?'"

AFL-CIO Launches Cutting-Edge Website
New website puts working people front and center, creates community space
www.aflcio.org

March 1, 2012 - The AFL-CIO launched its new website today to put the stories of working people front and center and create a community space to share information, take action, and showcase the work of the labor movement. The website is part of a broader effort to highlight the diverse work of the labor movement and use innovative technology to engage people in dynamic ways.

"Since becoming Secretary-Treasurer, I have committed to making the labor movement more available and open to all working people," said AFL-CIO Secretary Treasurer Liz Shuler.  "I believe to be relevant and part of the conversation in this day and age we need to do things differently. The goal of the AFL-CIO's new website is to not only be a resource for working family issues, but to provide an online forum and showcase working families and union members in a new and nontraditional way."

The website includes several new features that are designed to allow for more interactivity and voices on the site. The "AFL-CIO Now" blog, one of the most trafficked parts of the site, is a space where people from both outside and inside the labor movement can post content and updates and be part of a community on issues relevant to working people. An artificial intelligence search feature allows for content to be tagged with terms that connect it to relevant parts of the site so that the information stays fresh.  And the new "Action Center" provides a space for online organizing and information sharing, where people will enter their zip code to get recent local news, identify upcoming events, send petitions and contact their local member of Congress. The website also prominently features an "En Español" page which showcases Spanish language content and issues relevant to the Latino community.

The AFL-CIO website currently receives 350,000 unique visitors every month. Its most popular features include "How to Join and Form a Union" and "CEO Paywatch."

Gov. Nikki Haley and Friends at [Right to] Work

Guess who doesn't want you to know the truth about right to work? Mitt Romney. Newt Gingrich. Rick Santorum.

Gov. Nikki Haley is so adamantly in favor of laws hurting workers and unions that she introduced another right-to-work measure - even though South Carolina is already a right-to-work state.

Right to work isn't about rights or work. In fact, right-to-work laws drive down job standards for all of us. But corporate-backed politicians like Mitt, Newt, Rick, and Nikki want us to believe otherwise.

We need to take a stand to show lawmakers we're not fooled by their anti-worker spin. Sign our petition NOW!

Last month corporate-backed politicians succeeded in making Indiana the 23rd right-to-work state, and they're just getting warmed up. They won't stop until every state is right to work. Extremist legislators are busy pushing this deceptive legislation wherever they can - Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, and Ohio - and New Hampshire lawmakers are voting on a right-to-work proposal THIS WEEK.

Right-to-work supporters are moving full steam ahead.

Will you join me in fighting back against the right-wing's right-to-work scam?

>>YES, I'm in. Right to work is wrong for everyone.

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
