In Memory - Sam Bivens
Sam BivensSam Bivens, jazz artist, composer and performer passed away on Friday, February 17.

Born December 3, 1930 in Atlanta, GA. Sam was constantly banging and blowing on whatever was in reach. It was only a matter of time before he discovered the trumpet at age 12. Two years after first picking up the trumpet, Sam demonstrated the spirit, skill and discipline of an experienced musician by winning a chair in the Wilford Gibbs Orchestra.

By the 1940's Sam's career was in full swing. He joined the AFM in Knoxville, TN in 1945 and went on a national tour with the Leo Hines Orchestra. In addition to the Gibbs and Hines Orchestras, he showcased his talent in the Christine Chapman Orchestra (toured nationally), the Scotty Jones Combo, the Jake Gunn Combo and the Jerome Richardson Combo. After three years on the road, Sam returned to his hometown in Knoxville and completed his High School education in 1951.

The 50's brought on 6 new jazz combos, 3 orchestras, the United States Army, a wife and college. During this time Sam became established as an arranger. From 1951 to '53 he wrote for the Ivory Joe Hunter Combo and the Alex Stevens Orchestra. Sam was drafted into the US Army in 1953, where he wrote and performed for two years with the Army Band. In 1955 he played a stint with the renowned Duke Ellington Orchestra, and also had the honor of writing arrangements for other popular orchestras. He wrote for the Choker Campbell Orchestra and closed the decade in 1958 as an arranger for the nationally touring Jackie Wilson Show.

A Theory/Counterpoint major and a Music Education minor kept Sam occupied for four years, as did his wife and five children. Despite the circumstances, he put a great deal of energy into his formal education. During his senior year, he assisted his professor with writing and arranging. In 1962 he graduated from Knoxville College, seventh in his class. From there Sam pursued a teaching career that lasted 10 years.

In 1977, Sam moved to New York City and began performing again. He soon connected with Sonny Stitt's Quintet, "Four Jacks and a King," and wrote arrangements for the New York Jazz Mobile, the Jazz Giants and the Charlie Percip Orchestra. Twenty-six years after his Ellington encounter, in 1981, he was honored to play with another master's orchestra - the late, great Count Basie!

Eager to apply his years of musical knowledge and experiences, Sam returned to his hometown, St. Paul, MN. in 1981 where he formed his first big band, which was named the "Sam Bivens New Experience Orchestra."

In 1987, Sam came to Denver, where he formed his second orchestra, which is now known as "The Denver Jazz Orchestra" with Sam as the featured soloist, bandleader, writer, arranger and conductor.

In April of 2006, during National Jazz Appreciation Month, Sam was awarded high honors from the City of Denver for his longstanding community service. The award was presented prior to DJO's performance at the Five Points Jazz Festival.

Sam is survived by a wife, Thelma Bivens; 5 children: Sam Bivens Jr., Celia Ealey, Howard Bivens, Kevin Bivens, Angela Bivens; 15 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and host of nephews and nieces.

A memorial service/viewing will be held from 11 AM to noon on Friday, March 2nd at Ballard Family Mortuary, 6700 Smith Road in Denver. The funeral service will commence at noon and conclude at 2 PM.

Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra reaches out in ways that befit its unique hometown
Boulder Philharmonic
February 24, 2012

Special to The Denver Post

It's generally understood that American orchestras are challenged as never before.

Whether you blame a prolonged economic recession, an outdated business model, rising costs, more diversified audience tastes or all of the above, orchestras around the country are facing budget shortfalls and declining attendance.

While the Colorado Symphony Orchestra looks to a fresh, consumer-focused approach to secure its financial future and better connect with audiences, the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra has been quietly experimenting and innovating outside the spotlight.

"We're not just trying to attract patrons, we're trying to build a real connection between the orchestra and the community," said Michael Butterman, the Phil's music director since 2005. "Concerts are a gateway opportunity for people to connect to us."

Louisville Orchestra musicians ask council to back panel to settle dispute
Dan Klepal
The Courier-Journal
February 23, 2012

The continuing dispute between Louisville Orchestra musicians and its management reached the Louisville Metro Council Thursday when the musicians asked for the city legislators' support on a recommendation to form a "blue-ribbon commission" to help settle the year-long dispute.

At issue is whether recommendations in a report by Henry Fogel, former president and CEO of the League of American Orchestras, should be followed and the commission formed to identify long-term solutions to the impasse; or whether the two sides enter into binding arbitration, as management wants.

Music Meets Chávez Politics, and Critics Frown

Young Venezuelan musicians who are part of the country's training program, El Sistema.

CARACAS, Venezuela - In a country sharply divided by its blustery populist president, Hugo Chávez, Venezuelans can agree on one thing: El Sistema, its training system for young musicians, is a cherished vehicle for social uplift and a source of national pride.

But in recent years cracks have been appearing in that musical consensus. The way Mr. Chávez has embraced El Sistema has angered some of its supporters and has been seized on by Chávez opponents, provoking rare criticism of two of Venezuela's most celebrated and popular figures: the movement's revered founder, José Antonio Abreu, and its most famous product, the conductor Gustavo Dudamel.

"A lot of us are upset that Chávez has taken Sistema as his own child, and it's not," said Gabriela Montero, a Venezuelan pianist with an international career who has written a piece, "Ex Patria," denouncing the Chávez government and the fraying of civil society here. "It's almost like he's stolen something that we lived with for the past 40 years and dirtied it with his presence."

Workshop for Recreational Instrumental Musicians
A workshop targeting adults whose avocation is instrumental music is being offered through the Colorado Music Festival and Rocky Mountain Center for Musical Arts. Hands-on injury prevention training will be coupled with new brain-based strategies in music learning. Teachers of adult musicians are welcome to attend at a reduced rate.

The instructors, Carolyn Kuban, neurologic music therapist, harpist, and music medicine practitioner, and Kim Nelson, Pilates and dance kinesiology practitioner, together bring over twenty years of knowledge and experience in their fields.  Carolyn has given this workshop to harpists for the past 8 years and is now opening it up to all instrumental musicians.

The goal in this workshop is to help musicians approach playing their instruments with new understanding, whether in the areas of memorizing and sightreading, mental focus and attention, alleviating posture, tendonitis, or carpel tunnel issues, increasing endurance and relaxation, or aging issues and playing--and much more.

The workshop will be held at RMCMA, 200 E. Baseline Rd., Lafayette, on Sat. March 24 from 1:00-5:30 PM. Participants need to bring yoga mats or blankets for movement participation. For a registration form, contact Carolyn Kuban, at 303-499-0229,  kubanks@qwest.net, or go online

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
