Littleton Symphony withdraws from Richard Marx concert

By Pete Vriesenga

I'm pleased to announce that the Littleton Symphony has withdrawn from its August 14 engagement to perform with Richard Marx at Hudson Gardens. Confirmation of this engagement was known for two weeks before it was announced in the June 21 E-Bulletin. Al MacDonald, LSO President, confirmed that the decision to withdraw was Monday, June 20.

In my conversations with both Mr. MacDonald and Hudson Gardens CEO Rich Meredith, I agreed that a community partnership between LSO and Hudson Gardens should be encouraged. I also made it clear that it was not necessary for LSO to withdraw from the engagement. My position was simply that such community partnerships should be respectful of the talents and services that the musicians have to offer. They deserve to be paid at prevailing rate.

The American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada (AFM) is pleased to announce the appointment of Jay Blumenthal as director of Symphonic Services and as the Federation's Assistant Treasurer.

"Jay's outstanding relationship-building abilities have produced unparalleled excellence in the symphonic employment sector," says AFM President Ray Hair. "He is well known for promoting open, honest discussion on difficult issues, in difficult times, in a manner that encourages respect and problem-solving."

After a bloodless coup, the Fund for the Arts eyes ... itself?

Leo Weekly (Louisville's Alt-Weekly)
June 22, 2011
ByCary Stemle

It would be imprudent to wholly compare Shannon Westerman to the young Tunisian who set himself on fire and started a revolution. After all, for his protestations, that fellow paid the ultimate price. But when Westerman co-signed the letter that prompted Fund for the Arts President and CEO Allan Cowen to angrily threaten Westerman's job, a firestorm of sorts erupted. And by the time it burned out - things finally turned to gray ash when Cowen announced his retirement at a March 21 board meeting - the outcome was extraordinary in its own way.

During his 35 years at the Fund, Cowen was the most controversial figure in the Louisville arts scene, lauded for fundraising acumen and lamented for dictatorial tendencies. His last day was April 30. Barbara Sexton Smith, who's been at the Fund for 13 years, is the acting president and CEO as the board of directors decides what to do next. Currently, 10 people, including board members and representatives from various arts groups, sit on a committee charged with evaluating the Fund's modus operandi and recommending its future course.

The Denver Municipal Band, 7/3 & 7/4
Denver Municipal BandThe Denver Municipal Band is the oldest professional concert band in the continental United States.

The Denver Municipal Band was founded in the late 1860s by Alex Sutherland, bugler at the "Charge of The Light Brigade." Surviving the ordeal, he settled in Denver where he was active in many of the city's early musical activities. Originally constituted as the GAR Post Band, it performed early municipally funded concerts throughout the 1870s and 80s, changing its name to the Denver Municipal Band in 1891 when it began its continuous history of Denver Municipal Funding.

Summer Course in the Alexander Technique at CU Boulder, 7/11-15

The 17th Annual Summer Course in the Alexander Technique at the University of Colorado at Boulder will be held July 11-15, 2011, 9:00 to noon daily. A one day Intensive will be held July 15, 1-5:00 pm. The 2011 faculty includes Ed Bilanchone, Tully Hall, and James Brody. Early registration by DMA members will result in a 10% reduction in tuition.

The Alexander Technique is a powerful tool for changing habits in movement and thinking. While anyone can benefit from this Technique, the work applies especially well to musicians and educators. Participants will learn about generalized and specific body use issues that can affect both performance and educational settings, as well as practical skills for the classroom. The results of a
medical study in England that investigated the Alexander Technique were recently published in the British Medical Journal. A link to a summary of the study and a short film about it can be found at:
http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/337/aug19_2/a884.

For more information about the Course and the Alexander Technique in general, please consult the following web site: (http://spot.colorado.edu/~brody/alextechbasicinfo.html) or contact DMA member James Brody (brody@colorado.edu).

BEAVER CREEK: Progressives from around Colorado gathered today near a top strategy meeting of conservative funders, officials, and opinion makers near Vail, Colorado organized by the billionaire Koch brothers, to demand an end to recent attacks on Medicare and Social Security, and other institutions vital to the middle class in America.

"The billionaire Koch brothers are leading funders of the Tea Party, and the countless unnamed groups who appear on TV every election spreading misinformation," said Kjersten Forseth, executive director of ProgressNow Colorado. "Their agenda is simple: they want to dismantle Medicare and Social Security, cut education and every other source of public funding beneficial to America's middle class, while giving the wealthy and big corporations even more tax breaks."

"This secret conference is where they plot the next steps," said Forseth.

Word of the Koch brothers' unpublicized conference near Vail this weekend first leaked in an obscure Virginia news report about the upcoming travels of that state's conservative Gov. Bob McDonnell. The previous Koch conference, held in Palm Springs, California last January, was met with a large protest of progressives seeking transparency-and more importantly, truth in advertising.

"ProgressNow Colorado does not oppose political donations," said Forseth. "ProgressNow Colorado is against using corporate profits to attack Social Security, Medicare, and vital institutions that the Koch Brothers want to dismantle for future generations. We're against making painful cuts to education, health care, and transportation while giving rich people and big corporations more tax breaks."

"A larger problem for the Koch brothers, and other corporate funders of the right wing, is what happens when their consumers and shareholders figure out how the profits are being spent," said Forseth. "Our message for the Koch brothers for today is simpler: take all of the swanky vacations in our beautiful state that you want, because it's great for our local economy, but please end this war on America's middle class before it's too late."

Public or Private, It's Work

Sutton, Vt.

AS New Jersey throws its weight behind Wisconsin and Ohio in rolling back the collective bargaining rights of public sector employees, we are once again going to hear the argument that public sector unions ought not to be confused with their private sector counterparts. They're two different animals entirely.

Private sector workers, so the argument goes, have historically organized to win better working conditions and a bigger piece of the pie from profit-making entities like railroads and coal mines. But public sector employees work for "us," the ultimate nonprofit, and therefore are not entitled to the same protections.

This is a fond notion at best. Yes, public school teachers were never gunned down by Pinkerton guards; municipal firefighters were never housed in company-owned shanties by the side of the tracks. But none of this cancels their rights as organized workers. No ancestor of mine voted to ratify the Constitution, either, but I have the same claim on the Bill of Rights as any Daughter of the American Revolution. Collective bargaining is an inheritance and we are all named in the will. Read On

"The fact is that our entire economic system rests on the principle of paying someone less than his or her labor is worth. The principle applies in the public sector no less than the private."

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
