Bass player Charlie Burrell lays foundation for classical, jazz followers
|
By William Porter The Denver Post 06/19/2011 01:00:00 AM MDT Charlie Burrell's big left hand cradles the neck of the upright bass like a baby, his right hand coaxing a cascade of notes from the instrument's wooden belly: alternately popping and loping across the strings, always in perfect time. The glowing end of a cigar - Dominican robustos, baby, better than Cubans - juts from the musician's mouth. Eyes closed, he cracks a beatific smile. His face, though creased with age, seems adrift in time. He could be back in the Paradise Club in Detroit, the city where he grew up in poverty. Or with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra in the early 1960s, when he was its first black player. Or on the stages of Club Algeria or Lil's After-Hours in Five Points' heyday, Charlie Burrell a groundbreaking classical and jazz bassist at his Denver home on Thursday June 9, 2011 on Friday. Burrell is in his 90s and still going strong. He practices his bass in his music room with a signature cigar right in his mouth. (The Denver Post | Cyrus McCrimmon) backing jazz legends Billie Holiday , Erroll Garner and Charlie Parker . But Burrell is in his home just north of City Park, amid his studio's memorabilia and sheet music. A stand holds the score to "Lush Life," the Billy Strayhorn classic. Yes, Burrell met him too. How People's Opera Orchestrated Its Peril
| By ROBIN POGREBIN and DANIEL J. WAKIN Published: June 15, 2011, NY Times AT first glance New York City Opera would appear to have been blessed with a full chorus of advantages. For 46 years it was a fixture at Lincoln Center, operating at the city's premier cultural hub in an elegant theater overlooking the plaza fountain. Most of its utility expenses were paid by the city, which owns the building. It split other expenses with the New York City Ballet, which shares the space. And when the opera sought a renovation, a generous donor and the city stepped forward with $125 million to pay for it. Read On |
A Lost Tune by Gershwin?
| The following email came to me on 6/19, and Mr. Kates was thoughtful to follow-up with a phone call to discuss the unique nature of this story. At the very least, an interesting and intriguing story.
Pete Vriesenga Denver Musicians Association
 | Bruce Lloyd Kates |
Dear Mr. Vriesenga,
My name is Bruce Lloyd Kates, I am a piano tuner and a composer-lyricist living in Los Angeles, my place of birth. About 23 years ago, I was called to tune and repair the Steinway grand piano in the home of Mrs. Leonore Gershwin, the widow of Ira Gershwin. This piano had belonged to George Gershwin and was being prepared to be shipped to Washington, D.C. upon Mrs. Gershwin's passing. When I opened up the keyboard mechanism to repair some malfunctioning keys, I discovered a small piece of manuscript paper that had 15 notes written in C major with a repeat sign. Unaware at the time of what this crumpled wad of paper contained, I took it out of the mechanism with a pair of tweezers and dropped it into the side pocket of my sport coat. Only years later did I become aware of its contents, and this was after I had used the notes to create a song which I copyrighted. Realizing later that I may have unintentionally plagiarized a Gershwin tune, I contacted Warner-Chappell Publishing, ASCAP, the Library of Congress as well as some Gershwin heirs about this, but never received any reply. I have played this song for some Gershwin aficionados who say it sounds very Gershwinesque but they cannot place it.
This has all been posted on my website for a good many years: www.brucelloydkates.com under the heading "Gershwin's Lost Tune" but no one ever seemed to notice it. This led me recently to contact the Los Angeles Times and they took an interest in interviewing me and printing my story in their newspaper where it appeared on Sunday, May 29, 2011. I am including for you a link to that article.
http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-lost-gershwin-20110529,0,688726.story
I am contacting you today as I have been contacting other musicians' unions because I'm hoping to bring this matter to the attention of the professional music community, rather than simply the general public. Thank you for your time and attention.
Sincerely, Bruce Lloyd Kates Los Angeles, California brucelloydkates@earthlink.net www.brucelloydkates.com |

Summer Course in the Alexander Technique at CU Boulder, 7/11-15
| The 17th Annual Summer Course in the Alexander Technique at the University of Colorado at Boulder will be held July 11-15, 2011, 9:00 to noon daily. A one day Intensive will be held July 15, 1-5:00 pm. The 2011 faculty includes Ed Bilanchone, Tully Hall, and James Brody. Early registration by DMA members will result in a 10% reduction in tuition.
The Alexander Technique is a powerful tool for changing habits in movement and thinking. While anyone can benefit from this Technique, the work applies especially well to musicians and educators. Participants will learn about generalized and specific body use issues that can affect both performance and educational settings, as well as practical skills for the classroom. The results of a medical study in England that investigated the Alexander Technique were recently published in the British Medical Journal. A link to a summary of the study and a short film about it can be found at: http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/337/aug19_2/a884.
For more information about the Course and the Alexander Technique in general, please consult the following web site: (http://spot.colorado.edu/~brody/alextechbasicinfo.html) or contact DMA member James Brody (brody@colorado.edu).

Walmart Associates Stand Up for Change
|
As the largest private sector employer in the United States, Walmart has enormous power to set the trends not just for the retail and service industries, but for the economy as a whole. Wages and working conditions set at Walmart have a ripple-effect throughout all jobs: low wages, limited access to health care, and no retirement security.
On June 7th,associates at Walmart stores nationwide launched the Organization United for Respect at Walmart, or OUR Walmart. OUR Walmart was founded with a mission to ensure that every Associate, regardless of his or her title, age, race, or sex, is respected at Walmart.
Click here to let Walmart Associates know that you stand with them as they work to make a difference in their own stores & their company.
Jobs with Justice is making change at Walmart on two fronts:
- In cities where Walmart is looking to expand, Jobs with Justice coalitions are working to ensure that Walmart has a positive impact in our communities. For example, some coalitions are working to get Walmart to sign community benefit agreements that ensure good jobs, and to ensure that their stores do not negatively impact local communities.
- Jobs with Justice coalitions are working with the Organization for Respect at Walmart (OUR Walmart) to build a voice for Walmart associates.
What we're demanding from Walmart is what we're demanding overall: creation of good jobs, the right to organize and collectively bargain, and the right for dignity and self-determination for our families and the communities we live in.
Some say that Walmart cannot be organized. But many said the same about auto workers at Ford before 1935 or about janitors before 1985. Both victories not only changed the lives of the workers involved, but they raised the floor for working people and our communities across the country. They changed the entire economy for the better by creating sustainable, union jobs and dignity for our communities. If we can change Walmart, we can improve the lives of all working people. Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson. A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser! $25 Creekside Publishing Company Available mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton. Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson. Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8. $65 Creekside Publishing Company Availabe mail order through www.creeksidepublishingcompany.com or through Flesher-Hinton.
