DMA/COMBO MEMBERSHIP DRIVE
Save $$ by Joining DMA, COMBO, or Both!

Colorado musicians are fortunate to have two great organizations that were created by musicians, for musicians. The Denver Musicians Association has raised prevailing wage and established industry standards and benefits. DMA offers an active referral service, contract guarantees, instrument insurance, rehearsal space, pension and more. The Colorado Music Business Organization (COMBO) has built a deserving reputation as a welcome home for touring and club bands, while providing musicians with the tools and business savvy that will help to launch their careers and ensure success.

DMA and COMBO are both member-driven organizations committed to pursuing all available avenues to organize our industry and create opportunity. There is great logic in pooling our minds and resources for the future - YOUR FUTURE.

From October 1 through December 31, 2010, the Denver Musicians Association (DMA) is offering an exclusive $50 membership discount to members of the Colorado Music Business Association (COMBO). DMA's one-time $115 Initiation Fee will be reduced to $65, meaning that you can join the DMA for only $88.50. If you're age 20 or younger you will qualify for a Youth Membership and you can join for only $38.50!

From October 1 through December 31, 2010, COMBO is offering a $10 exclusive membership discount to DMA members at a cost of $20. If you're contemplating joining either the DMA or COMBO, now is the time to join both and save a total of $60! Join COMBO today directly through their website at www.coloradomusic.org. Click on "Join COMBO" and then register as a "Supporter". Indicate "DMA" on the "Other comments" line to claim your discount. You can also call 720-570-2280. Then contact the DMA at 303-573-1717 to join, or through the DMA website at www.dmamusic.org.

You can renew your COMBO individual membership in 2011 for $30/year. Also, you can renew your DMA membership for $149/year or $38.50/quarter. We only hope that you use this opportunity to become a member of both organizations, and then take charge of the possibilities that lie ahead.

Students Performing Work of Professionals
From the Pike's Peak Musicians Association,
AFM Local 154 in Colorado Springs.

We continue to receive reports of students being engaged to perform in non-educational settings, thereby displacing those who earn or supplement their living as professional musicians. This practice not only deprives our union musicians of securing work that should rightfully belong to them, but it does a disservice to the students (who perhaps may be future professionals) by teaching them that their performance has no value. Minimum wage and child labor laws have existed for many, many years, yet they would seem not to apply when students of music are readily asked to perform at weddings, at the Broadmoor or for other public events for little or no remuneration or in exchange for tuition credits or donations to the organization that promoted them. We need to be more alert to these demeaning situations and to object and discourage their occurence. Educators, private teachers and parents alike need to be educated to protect the rights of these students and to instill in them a respect for the profession that they may one day be part of.

The PPMA Board has discussed this continuing problem and welcomes your suggestions. We plan to take this matter up with educational leaders in the community in the near future. More to follow!

Editor's Note
Readers expressed great interest in ethical and job loss concerns raised in our 9/21/10 and 9/29/10 ebulletins, which focused on escalating conflict between amateur and professional ensembles. Unfortunately, parallel conflicts between student and professional musicians are also on the rise. Educational institutions promoting such activities are only robbing future employment opportunities for their students.

Re: "Why is Denver so cheap?" Sept. 12 A&E story.
Contrary to your article, the Boettcher Concert Hall project is not in danger of being scrapped but was temporarily placed on hold with the full blessing of the city while the symphony recovers from the recent economic recession, implements the proper internal systems, and engages the personnel necessary to realistically conduct a large-scale campaign.

Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra Presents
Every month, MJO features two different high school jazz ensembles in concert at Dazzle! Playing the second and third Monday of each month (with some exceptions), the school plays one set followed by a set from MJO. The big finale includes both bands on stage featuring soloists from both groups. One of MJO's missions is to support jazz in the schools and this program, in our 6th year, continues to be wildly successful. Reservation ALWAYS recommended at Dazzle (303-839-5100). Great food, great atmosphere and always a great night of big band music! Check our website (MetropolitanJazzOrchestra.org) for our calendar and to confirm each month's schedule.

Performer Pass Acceptance at the CCC Garage!

Effective immediately, Performer Pass Coupons will be accepted for parking use, at all times (excluding CCC garage specific Black-Out dates), on the P2 level of the Convention Center Garage.  Click Here for detailed information sheet that outlines the specific instructions for Coupon use.  Please be sure to distribute this important information to all your organization team members.  The Performer Pass Coupon can be used at the CCC garage at nearly any time, regardless if there is a Black-Out date at the DPAC Garage, or not.  The only exception to the Pass use is if the CCC Garage has it's own specific Black-Out date based on their facility parking needs. Use of Performer Passes is also subject to the Master Black-Out Schedule for both garages.

Because the two parking garages use two completely different parking management systems, a simple low-tech procedure has been established to accommodate Complex employee parking at the CCC Garage.  Basically, Coupon holders wishing to park in the CCC garage just need to follow3-Easy Steps:
1.) Park on Level P2,
2.) Write the 4-digit vehicle stall # on the Coupon, and
3.) Drop the Coupon into a locked drop box located along the route to DPAC.
We are very delighted to include the CCC Garage into the Performer Pass Program - it certainly expands employee parking options in the immediate area.

Reminder, the first DPAC Only Black-Out date of the season is Saturday, October 16th!

"Black-Out" Dates for DPAC Performer Parking Passes (rev. Oct 4)
The Denver Musicians Association is one of several entities that may distribute DPAC parking passes, which we currently available for $6 each. The policy for distribution and use of parking passes is detailed in a MOU with the parking complex.
As detailed in a Sept 15 Memo, performer parking passes will be subject to Black-Out and Red Flag Dates (rev. Oct 4) when these parking passes will be invalid. These are designated high volume dates as the Holiday Season approaches, and will also affect parking in the Colorado Convention Center (CCC) garage. Immediate dates in the DPAC garage are Saturday, October 16 and Saturday, October 23.
Please make alternate arrangements on these specific dates, and be sure to allow plenty of extra time.

Call for GBYO brass musicians
Dear music teachers,

We're very excited that many people are showing a great deal of interest in the new Greater Boulder Youth Orchestras, and we've already received more than 150 audition applications. However, we're light on brass, especially low brass. We have trumpet players, but need horns, trombones, and tuba.
We are only a few brass players away from assembling a full orchestra, and I hope you'll join me in seeking out talented and enthusiastic brass students to work with Maestro Gary Lewis, the artistic staff, and the GBYO mentoring program in this inaugural season. It promises to be a tremendous year full of wonderful opportunities.
I'd also like to remind you at this time that all GBYO musicians are required to participate in their parallel school music ensemble and take private lessons.
More about our programs and conductors, and an audition application, can be found online at www.greaterboulderyo.org and I'd certainly be more than happy to talk with you about the coming year.

Thanks!
Brian Jack

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
