Timberline Symphony opts for a Cheap Makeover
By Pete Vriesenga

This past July, the board president of the Timberline Symphony Orchestra registered a new trade name "Boulder Symphony Orchestra" with the Colorado Secretary of State, accompanied by the requisite $20 filing fee. They updated their mission statement that now reads: "The Boulder Symphony encompasses the inspiration -which music brings to our lives- by the fearless exploration of undiscovered possibilities." The BSO secured a new performance venue as the orchestra in residence at First Presbyterian Church in Boulder. Also, a revamp of their website gives the orchestra a look and feel that would rival any professional ensemble, except for a brief disclaimer that is found on the Auditions page: "These are currently volunteer positions."
Many in the community are asking why this volunteer community orchestra is deliberately confusing name branding with the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra? Despite the confusion and potential damage to both organizations (even Google gets it wrong), the BSO has no intention of backing down from their new look. This could be their "fearless exploration of undiscovered possibilities" as the BSO simply rides the coattails of the professional musicians who have paved the way forward, but with none of the cost.

WE'LL GLADLY PLAY FOR LESS
Evidence already shows that the BSO's residency at First Presbyterian Church may displace professional engagements that have been established for over 20 years. If so, the BSO now joins company with the Lone Tree Symphony, which recently took a high-profile gig in Sweetwater Park that was built and established by professionals for more than 10 years.
There is only shame for musicians who knowingly take the bread & butter of professional musicians, and for no reason other than exposure - or worse yet, a pretense of community purpose. Jack London put it best in a speech entitled "The Scab," delivered in 1903: "To strike at a man's food and shelter is to strike at his life; and in a society organized on a tooth-and-nail basis, such an act, performed though it may be under the guise of generosity, is none the less menacing and terrible."
The DMA has always supported community ensembles and will continue to do so for generations to come. But, at what point do we collectively say enough is enough? When and under what circumstances should DMA members refrain from participating and assisting with these organizations? That subject and question is on the agenda of our September 27 General Membership Meeting. I look forward to seeing you there.

Notice Concerning Richardson (TX) Symphony Orchestra
The Dallas-Fort Worth Professional Musicians Association, Local 72-147 of the American Federation of Musicians, which represents more than 1700 professional musicians across North Texas and Southern Oklahoma, including musicians of the Dallas and Fort Worth Symphony Orchestras, The Dallas Opera Orchestra and the Richardson Symphony Orchestra, has placed the name of the Richardson Symphony Orchestra on the AFM's International Unfair List. At a management-called orchestra meeting on June 30, 2010, in which Union representatives were barred from attending, RSO Executive Board chairman, Jim Pierce announced that the RSO would refuse to recognize or negotiate a successor collective bargaining agreement with the musicians' union.
On July 1 the RSO management issued regressive, self-serving personal service contracts that eliminated the union as the bargaining rep. With union musicians refusing to work for the RSO, management is attempting to cobble together a replacement orchestra, consisting largely of amateur musicians, including students, some of whom have been told they won't be paid for up to a year. We urge all university teachers to discourage their students and colleagues from performing services for the Richardson Symphony Orchestra.
On October 2, 2010, the scheduled date of their first concert since this dispute began, Local 72-147 will be engaging in its right to form a lawful picket line outside the Eisemann Center in Richardson, Texas to protest this egregious act by the RSO. We invite any and all who wish to support us in this effort to attend. And we remind all members of the AFM that the possibility of fines up to $50,000 and/or expulsion can be levied against members who perform musical services for the RSO.
Please feel free to contact the office of Local 72-147, American Federation of Musicians for further information. You may wish to visit our website at www.musiciansdfw.org and click on "Orchestras in Crisis" for all of the latest news and press releases concerning this ongoing dispute with the RSO, including a recording of the now infamous rant by conductor Anshel Brusilow against certain members of the orchestra.

Charles Ansbacher, former director of the Colorado Springs Symphony and most recently the Boston Landmarks Orchestra, died of a brain tumor Sunday at his Cambridge, Mass., home. He was 67.
A private family service is planned.
Ansbacher was "the brilliant strategist" in starting the Pikes Peak Center for the Performing Arts, according to a prepared statement by Phil Kendall, former president of the Colorado Springs Symphony.
Ansbacher had been chair of the state Council on the Arts and Humanities and was on a mayoral committee that chose art for Denver International Airport. In March, Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper dedicated the Charles Ansbacher Hall, which connects the DIA terminal with concourse A.

LABOR & POLITICS

Colorado AFL-CIO Statewide Political Endorsements
Working families in Colorado are struggling mightily right now with this challenging economy. When our members or their families are struggling it is easy to get discouraged, but now is not the time to lose ground for working families in Colorado.
Working families have a clear choice to make in 2010. We can sit on the sidelines and allow the same politicians that let Wall Street run amok and ruin our economy back in power or we can support candidates and issues that will continue to move our agenda forward in Colorado and in Washington, D.C.
The Denver Musicians Association in concert with Colorado AFL-CIO's endoresement process, has researched the candidates and ballot measures and would ask you to consider the following points as you decide how to fill out your ballot.
Support Michael Bennet for U.S. Senate  - Michael Bennet voted for financial reform to protect Colorado working families from having to rescue the big banks that took sloppy and excessive risks that nearly wrecked our economy. Michael Bennett opposes raising the retirement age and says we need to protect Social Security from those who want privatize it.  He wants to be sure Social Security is there for current retirees and for future generations.
Vote "NO" on Amendments 60, 61, 63 and Proposition 101   - These anti-worker ballot measures are risky experiments that will kill our members' jobs, threaten our fragile economy, hurt our children's schools and increase healthcare costs for all of us. We need to vote "NO!"
As an affiliate union of the Colorado AFL-CIO, the State Labor Federation, we have also included a copy of the 2010 Colorado AFL-CIO Voter guide. We would ask that you strongly consider the AFL-CIO endorsed candidates for U.S. House, State Senate and State House as you make your voting decisions.
How you vote is your decision. We have interviewed the candidates and researched the ballot measures and have made these recommendations to you and your family to help you make an informed decision.
Please call the DMA at 303-573-1717 or the Colorado AFL-CIO at 303-433-2100 if you need more information about candidates, ballot measures or information on voting procedures.

Please remember to vote by November 2nd.

YOUTH ORCHESTRAS / EDUCATIONAL ENSEMBLES

Call for GBYO brass musicians
Dear music teachers,

We're very excited that many people are showing a great deal of interest in the new Greater Boulder Youth Orchestras, and we've already received more than 150 audition applications. However, we're light on brass, especially low brass. We have trumpet players, but need horns, trombones, and tuba.
We are only a few brass players away from assembling a full orchestra, and I hope you'll join me in seeking out talented and enthusiastic brass students to work with Maestro Gary Lewis, the artistic staff, and the GBYO mentoring program in this inaugural season. It promises to be a tremendous year full of wonderful opportunities.
I'd also like to remind you at this time that all GBYO musicians are required to participate in their parallel school music ensemble and take private lessons.
More about our programs and conductors, and an audition application, can be found online at www.greaterboulderyo.org and I'd certainly be more than happy to talk with you about the coming year.

Thanks!
Brian Jack

Congas for Sale - I am downsizing my gear and have decided to sell my almost new Toca Traditional congas!  It is a set of 3: 11" quinto, 11 3/4" conga, and 12 1/2" tumba, each with a bag!  They are the natural oak finish drums, with near new heads!  I have only used them for recording sessions, since I have fiberglass drums for live gigs.  I am willing to sell the set for $600, which is far below the cost of a new set of pro drums.  Please call or email if you or someone you know is interested!  I am attaching a photo of the drums from Toca's web site.

Thanks for your help, and have a blessed day!

Quiet Song for Band- Grade 1/2, by Debbie Davidson.
A great song for the first band concert of the year! It uses the first five notes typically used in band method books, and is inspired by "Bolero." A quiet tune begins with the flutes and then gradually all of the instruments are added for a big climax before it tapers back down to the flutes. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Finale to Beethoven Symphony No. 9- Grade 2+ for full orchestra and SAB chorus, Debbie Davidson.
Arranged to make this amazing classic accessible for middle school students. Key signatures and changes are simplified. Vocal parts are all doubled, and the Baritone part is optional. An advanced part is included for extra support - when this piece was premiered at Cherry Creek Academy, a teacher played this advanced part on the cello and an advanced piano student played it on piano. Most of the second parts (i.e. second clarinet, second flute, second violin) can be handled by students in their second year of instruction. The Cherry Creek Academy performance involved singers, grades 5 - 8, band members, grades 6 - 8, and orchestra members, grades 6-8.
