Martin's International & Associates, LLC in assocations with American Airline presents The 27th Annual International Reggae and World Music Awards (IRAWMA), and returns to Harlem at the world famous Apollo Theater, located at 253 West 125th Street, NYC, on Sunday, May 4, 2008. A VIP reception begins at 6:00 pm and general admission is at 7:00 pm.
Various media organizations, promoters and performing artists were in attendance at the official IRAWMA New York Press Conference held March 27th, at club Element in Manhattan. Veteran vocalist Sheila Hylton, Ephraim Martin of Martin's International & Associates and Andrew Rowe of American Airlines, announced the nominees, performers and sponsors. Jowee Omicil & The Core
Joseph Omicil Jr. "Jowee" was born in Montreal, Canada, of Haitian parents. He plays the Alto, Soprano and Tenor Sax in addition to flute and clarinet by the age of 15. He majored in Music Education from Berklee College of Music in Boston. "Jowee" did his first major tour with Roy Hargrove. With his friend and mentor, Kenny Garrett, he rose to the top and shared stage with Marcus Miller, Pharoah Sanders, Branford Marsalis, Richard Bona, Wyclef Jean, Grant Green Jr. and most recently Marlon Saunders to name a few. His sound can be heard on CD or during performances with many like: Tabou Combo, Pepe Bayard, Beethova Obas, Emeline Michel, Belo, Phantoms, Wyclef Jean, and Harold Faustin, among many others. He released his CD "Let's Do This" in 2006 ( Darren Barrett is featured) to much industry acclaim and since then, the Jazz World has been hooked. Jowee Omicil & The Core just recorded their most recent album titled " Roots and Groove" with Grammy award winner Lionel Loueke (Africa), Herbie Hancock guitarist, Francisco Mela (Cuba-drums), Kona Khasu (Africa-upright bass and electric bass), Alain Kodjovy (Africa-acoustic guitar), Manny Laine (USA-drums), Emeline Michel and Erold Josue (Haiti-chants), Johnny Mercer (USA-keyboard) and Patrick Andy (Madagascar-bass.).He is proud and honored to have been chosen by the legendary Pepe Bayard to produce his album soon to be released JoweeO Saxophonist/Producer/Composer and Music Educator performed at many venues throughout the States and internationally. He recently represented Haiti at the 2nd Annual Port-au-Prince International Jazz Festival along side Brazil, United States, Mexico, Canada, Chile, Spain, Switzerland, and France. Andre Foaud of newspaper 'Le Matin" classified Jowee as "Le Virtuose du Jazz" for the skillful way that he manipulates the sax. Jowee's ad-lib performances are captivating enough to keep "those that came out sought cover from the rain in overhang areas and inspired by the high energy sounds of Haitian sax player Jowee Omicil from Miami, the majority of attendees stuck it out until the rain abated, loving his music" reported Tequilla Minsky for Heritagekonpa Magazine. Renowned guitarist Lionel Loueke calls him " Le Dechireur " meaning his sound is amazing and versatile. Florida State Representative Ronald Bris� recognized his efforts for his community activities (performances for young kids in prison, children at their sick beds in hospitals, march against youth violence, etc). During his performance at SOBs, NY - JoweeO &The Core kept the music lovers and those seeking for something fresh and exciting very occupied and flabbergasted. The crowd left asking for more... Carnival Center for the Performing Arts in Miami, JoweeO & The Core- his quartet- moved a mixed crowd during his entire presence on stage, brandishing his saxophone in the air while searching for the perfect note- a style unique to him- the audience tried to emulate his sound. "Starmania", the rock opera, makes wave in Montreal by way of Haiti.
"Haiti en sc�ne" (Haiti on stage) a theater group base in Port-au-Prince decided to revisit "Starmania", the famous rock opera by Luc Plamondon and Michel Berger, by adding Haitian flavor to this piece. This theatrical event took place at La TOHU in Montreal, Canada on March 26th-30th. The Governor General of Canada, Her Excellency The Right Honorable Michaelle Jean initiated the push to bring the group to Montreal after attending "Ha�ti en sc�ne"'s adaptation of "Starmania" during a mission in Haiti.
