Navajo Nation Extreme Mustang Makeover Champion Crowned

For the past three months, more than twenty trainers have been working with wild Mustangs in preparation for the Navajo Nation Extreme Mustang Makeover in Tsaile, Arizona, August 12-14, the hard work was put to the test as the trainers displayed the talents of the Mustangs in classes designed to showcase the horses' intelligence and athletic ability. When the dust settled, Jed Austin Mayfield of Tucson, Arizona, and his Mustang EZ were named the champions of the first Extreme Mustang Makeover ever to be held in Arizona.

Mayfield and EZ, a 2008 black gelding gathered from the Cedar Mountain Herd Management Area in Utah, amassed 34 points for their compulsory class and 60 points in the freestyle finals for a total score of 94 to win the event. Mayfield is a 27-year-old native of Tucson. He learned to ride from his father at the age of 4 and started training his own horses at 17. Mayfield and his wife, Amy, have two sons. He is a fourth generation farrier and is a certified performance horse trainer. Mayfield has been using EZ in his clinics to teach other riders, and was thrilled to adopt EZ for $950 at the adoption on August 14. Mayfield and EZ earned a check for $2,000 for their victory.

Frank Despain of Winslow, Arizona, trained Clyde, a 2008 bay gelding gathered from Cedar Mountain, Utah. Despain and Clyde were the reserve champions at the Navajo Nation Extreme Mustang Makeover. Clyde was the highest adopted horse at the August 14 adoption and was adopted for $1,400. Compete results are available at www.extrememustangmakeover.com/emmarizona.php.

The storied history shared by Mustangs and Native Americans was front and center when the Extreme Mustang Makeover stopped at the Navajo Nation and Diné College in Tsaile, Arizona. Horse songs and traditional prayers began each day's competitions. The breathtaking scenery made the experience even more unforgettable. Mustangs and their trainers got to explore the beautiful country while competing on a natural trail course designed by the Ultimate Ranch Cowboy Horse Competition.

The Ultimate Ranch Cowboy Horse Competition (URCHC) raises funds for scholarships. Stanley Kedelty presented the idea to the family of the late Ross Begay Sr. The funds raised from the URCHC event are used solely for college scholarships for the Crystal, New Mexico, community. The Annual URCHC honors the late Ross Begay Sr., Alvin Begay and Grace Denetso who were well-known ranchers in Crystal. All three were among the first family in Crystal to advocate for infrastructure development and improving the quality of life for the community. Their support for improving Navajo life extended beyond their family and into the local community.

In all, $6,000 in prize money was awarded at the competition. In addition to the top-10 finals, other awards were also presented. Jennifer Earnest, who trained Claude, won the buckle for the Rookie Division. The Rookie Division recognizes the highest placing trainer after the preliminary classes. Earnest, who is from Silt, Colorado, and Claude finished third in the finals. Wesley Coates, who trained 44 Magnum, won the buckle for the Silver Bullet Division, which recognizes the highest placing trainer 50 years old or older. Coates is from Gunnison, Utah. Aaron Smith-Tayson, who trained Charger, won the buckle for the Young Gun Division. Smith-Tayson is from Twenty-Nine Palms, California. The Young Gun award is given to the top placing trainer aged 18-21.

J.W. Brooks was born in Durango, Colorado, and raised on the ranchlands of Colorado and Wyoming. From a very young age, it became apparent that J.W. was destined to become an artist. In 1994, J.W. was the youngest artist commissioned to render Phoenix, Arizona's "Rodeo of Rodeos" rodeo lithograph. Phoenix later asked J.W. to be the featured artist again in 1996 and 1997. In 2004, he was honored again by Scottsdale, Arizona's Parada Del Sol Rodeo to be their featured artist.

In addition to crafting cowboy hats and drawing western art, J.W. has gained popularity as a country western singer. J.W. and his wife, Jody, live in Scottsdale, Arizona, and are working to continue and preserve the western heritage and way of life they've always enjoyed.

Helmet Incentive

Riders4Helmets Offers Incentive at Supreme

The Riders4Helmets campaign has created a unique $2000 Helmet Safety Incentive that will debut at the 2011 Supreme Extreme Mustang Makeover 2011.

Each division - Stars, Idols and Legends - will have a $500 Helmet Safety Incentive. In order to qualify for the Incentive, exhibitors must wear a properly SEI certified helmet with a properly fitted strap in all preliminary classes and finals, if qualified. The winner of the $500 will be the highest scoring rider, or handler for Stars, that is sporting a SEI certified helmet. Each division will be awarded $500. The winner in each division will be determined from the preliminary scores - not the freestyle. An exhibitor could win this award without making the finals if none of the top 10 exhibitors are wearing an approved helmet.

In addition to these incentives for each division, there will be a separate $500 award given to a rider that wears a helmet and has not already won a Helmet Incentive Award. This $500 award will be drawn at random from all the exhibitors signed up for the helmet incentive that did not win their respective division helmet incentive awards. The $500 award for the random drawing of helmeted exhibitors is $250 cash and a $250 gift certificate to Equestrian Collections, a Western and English online retail store.

"As trainers of these amazing American Mustangs, it is our duty to represent the breed will dignity, honor and respect," says Mary Miller Jordan, who helped organize the incentive and is a Supreme adopter/exhibitor. "It is an honor to have the opportunity to show America what these horses are capable of and along with that honor comes a duty to represent ourselves as responsible, positive role models. One way we can do that is by using the platform of the SEMM to show others that it is cool to wear a helmet. Whether or not you feel you need a helmet, there are others watching you that undoubtedly do need a helmet. You may not realize it, but by being a competitor in the SEMM, you have many eyes watching you. Everything you do is making an impact on others - from the respect that you treat your Mustangs with, to the helmet on your head or lack thereof. YOU are a role model, and you ARE being watched."

In order to sign up for this incentive, exhibitors must bring their helmet to the trainers meeting to have it checked for SEI certification and proper fit.

Need a helmet? Tipperary Helmets has offered a 20 percent discount for all Supreme Extreme Mustang Makeover exhibitors toward the purchase of a Tipperary Sportage, an attractive, well ventilated helmet.

The goal of the Riders4Helmets campaign is simple: to get more equestrians wearing helmets...period. The campaign was founded by Lyndsey White and Jeri Bryant. Learn more about the Riders4Helmets campaign at www.riders4helmets.com.

TIP halter horse

Trainer Incentive Program

The Mustang Heritage Foundation is always looking for talented trainers to join our Trainer Incentive Program. Approved TIP trainers, pick up a Mustang from a BLM facility, gentle the horse and find an adopter within 90 days. TIP Trainers can also make arrangements with most BLM offices to pick up horses from a BLM satelite adoption site on the final day of the adoption event. Visit the BLM's website to see the satelite adoptions planned for September. Many BLM offices also allow TIP Trainers to bring gentled TIP horses to satelite adoption sites to connect with potential adopters, too! Call your local BLM office to get details and verify their policy.

Not a TIP Trainer? Apply today to be part of this great program that pays trainers to help a deserving Mustang find an adoptive home!
