 INTERVIEW WITH THE EDITOR
Millie talks with Instructor, Penney Baker
Penney
  1. How did you get started and how long have you been training dogs? I have always had dogs growing up.  It started with Pokey, who I don't remember much about her, then Betsy, Bootsie, Lila.  Fred was my first dog that I got after I moved out of the house. In between was a dog called Ginger that my parents had after we all moved out.  Fred came from the humane society and I learned a lot about housebreaking from him!  Lila was a dog owned by a person who I worked for and we ended up adopting her when she was no longer wanted by the owners.  We ended up with 3 dogs all around 11yrs old.  Lila was a labrador cross and where I got my love for my labradors.  I started training my oldest lab who is now 14 as a puppy for Hunt Tests.  I started at Tails U Win training agility with that same dog about 10 yrs ago and have been training ever since.
  2. What do you believe are the three most important things to teach a dog?
  3.  House Manners, Settling at Home and Tricks!
When you come home from a long day at work and are tired and hungry, the last thing you might want to do is train or worry about a dog. With each dog that has come into my house I have modified my life somewhat for the first year to make sure there is time for the dog and me to be together - even if it was just for playing ball and getting exercise. What a great excuse to quit the gym! I love it when folks come over my house and when they leave mention that you would never know that I owned 5 large dogs.
  4.  What types of situations do you find most challenging? What techniques have you found helpful in dealing with those situations?  Rescue Dogs - Folks that take on this task are a very special group of people. You have no idea what the dog has been exposed to, for how long and why.  I ask a lot of questions, try to get a good feel as to what the dogs new environment is like, what their day is like.  I take advantage of the great staff we have here at Tails and bounce questions and challenges to them so that I can bring back experienced answers.  Sometimes there is no one answer and that can be difficult for the owner because human nature is such that we just want to fix it!  One of my labradors is somewhat challenging due to being a single pup and I have learned a lot about that.
  5. What advice or tips would you give other trainers about working with dogs and their owners?  Smile, Breath and Have Fun.  Remember that everyone loves their dog as much as you love your own.  Remember why your dog came to you.  Figure out what is important to the person you are working with.  Sometimes as a trainer you want to push certain things because they are important to you, but another person might not care.  Remember why you wanted to be a trainer.  For me, its because I love it when people come back to class the next week and say "hey, that worked!".
  6. What are some of your other interests?  My husband and I enjoy going to plays (musicals are the best!), hiking with our dogs, canoeing and kayaking on occasion.  Being outside.  Reading, Gardening.  Sitting on the deck with the sun warming me and the dogs who are all snoozing on the broken hot tub!
Canine Chiropractor At Tails

We are happy to welcome Dr. Jacoba van der Giessen to Tails-U-Win!  She has been scheduling appointments at Tails every few Fridays for the last few months.  She is wonderful! She is highly skilled, kind and patient with her clients and nice to people, too.  If you would like to schedule an appointment she will be at Tails on May 14th.

 You can check out her
Coby's Schedule
and then contact   Pam to set up an appointment

Dr. Jacoba van der Giessen grew up in Nova Scotia, Canada, and graduated from the Atlantic Veterinary College in Prince Edward Island.  Having had exposure to holistic approaches in private practice, she decided to pursue chiropractic training to enhance and optimize quality of care.  She received her certification from the Healing Oasis Wellness Center, which is the only nationally accredited chiropractic school in the country.  Dr. van der Giessen has demonstrated significant improvement in success rates of treatments by integrating chiropractic with traditional care, and also performs veterinary spinal manipulative therapy to enhance athleticism in patients.  She has a special interest in performance dogs who are running agility courses, or field trials, as the benefits are easily appreciated not only in comfort, but also level of peformance and achievement.  Her greatest success story would be her own Ducktolling Retriever, Harley, who suffered from unmanaged severe hip dysplasia until she adopted him.  Despite numerous orthopedic specialist consultations and recommendations, Harley's pain level was barely touched by conventional medications.  With proper chondroprotectives, physical therapy, and regular chiropractic adjustments, he is now the most comfortable he's ever been, and rarely shows any evidence that he even has this condition!

2 Dogs 2000 Miles to visit New London

Man on walk from Austin to raise awareness for animal cancer to stop in New London on his way to Boston

In March 2008, Luke Robinson and his two dogs left their home in Austin, Texas, and began 2 Dogs 2000 Miles - a cross country trek to Boston in order to raise awareness for animal cancer. On April 25, Robinson will bring 2 Dogs 2000 Miles and its message to the New London Waterfront. The event will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Well-behaved, leashed dogs are welcome.

2 Dogs 2000 Miles in New London's Waterfront celebration will include performances from the canine musical freestyle group Top Hat & Tails Canine Dance Troupe by Carrie Neri, Laurie Sullivan,

Laurel Rabschutz and our own Nancy Triou. The performances will include traditional obedience, tricks and choreographed dance set to music

In conjunction with the doggie dancing on the Waterfront will be a 2 Dogs 2000 Miles meet and greet at Spirit Gallery - New London's tattoo studio and art gallery hybrid located at 207 State St. The meet and greet will also be held from 1 to 3 p.m. and will give attendees a chance to personally meet Robinson and his two Great Pyrenees, Hudson and Murphy. Refreshments will be served. After his stop in New London, Robinson and company will continue his journey to Boston, bringing his travels to an end on June 18.

About 2 Dogs 2000 Miles:

In 2004, Luke Robinson's dog Malcolm succumbed to bone marrow cancer after a two year battle. This tragic event inspired Robinson to start 2 Dogs 2000 Miles - a cross country walk to raise awareness for animal cancer. To date, Robinson and his dogs, Hudson and Murphy, have walked across 14 states and are scheduled to complete their trek in Boston on June 18, 2010. For more information, visit www.2dogs2000miles.org.

About Top Hat & Tails Canine Dance Troupe:

Formed in 1997 Top Hat & Tails Canine Dance Troupe specializes in Canine Musical Freestyle - a creative blend of traditional obedience, tricks, and 'dance' movements which are choreographed and performed to music. The Dance Troupe perform at competitions, fundraisers, schools, pet expos and community events. They are also active in teaching freestyle classes, workshops and dog camps. The outside agility field is now open for rentals aand classes. All equipment that was borrowed during the winter should be returned asap.

Our new Friday Fun Night program  has gotten off to a great start.  The agility games and rally night had a full turnout and we have a CGC test night coming soon. Its a great time to do something fun with your dog, relax and visit with friends.  We have lots of new ideas for the coming  weeks so  stay tuned!

I know many of you are busy showing, trialing and competing in various canine events.  I hear about lots of wins and titles.  Why is no one bragging?  I've decided you must be either really busy or really modest!  We'd love to share your accomplishments so send them in.  It's easy.  Attach a photo and we'll publish that too.
