Greetings!

Welcome to the Nutcracker Season!

I am happy to reconnect with Alumni during this Nutcracker season. Whether you were under the tutelage of Audrée Estey, Judith Leviton, Dermot Burke, Marjorie Mussman, Septime Webre, Graham Lustig, Douglas Martin, and probably Mary Pat Robertson, we all share a common bond. We, as  students or professional dancers, support staff, parent volunteers, and board supporters, helped to make Nutcracker magic together!

This year's 48th annual season of The Nutcracker features new choreography by Company Director Douglas Martin, and a restored Victorian era Act 1, originally created for the company by Princeton Ballet School founder Audrée Estey in 1963. We welcome back Sherry Alban as Children's Rehearsal Director setting the Party Scene, getting those mice whiskers going, and the soldiers' barn door exact! She joins Mary Barton as ARBW Jr Ballet Mistress. Alumna Carolynn Hawthorne is designing and building our Snow costumes. We are proud to have Princeton Ballet School Alumni Stephen Campanella, Jennifer Gladney, Samantha Gullace, and Edward Urwin join our ranks in the American Repertory Ballet company.

Make sure to mark your calendars for the Nutcracker Alumni Gathering (details below)

Nutcracker 1956. Kit Hulit 3rd child from the left. Ralph Hulit , Herr Drosselmeyer's nehew, Pat Holcome as Clara.

We are so pleased to reconnect with Kit Hulit. She was a Party Girl in the Princeton Ballet Society's May 1956 production of The Nutcracker at McCarter Theatre. She sent us a memoir  where she writes of Audrée's vision in building towards the formation of the Princeton Regional Ballet which presented The Nutcracker in December 1963.We are proud to be one of our country's longest consecutive producers of this Holiday tradition.

Kit generously donated original programs, a photograph, and Party Girl costume all of which will be displayed at the Annual Nutcracker Gathering. She states that she is sure that Audrée lives on in the hearts of the hundreds of children to whom she passed on her gift.

Remember when...

Moving towards our 50th anniversary of The Nutcracker I am collecting " remember when" stories. Here is what Paul Liberti (circa 1980's) writes:

"Remember when Bryd White KICKED the sleigh off the tracks doing his jete in his Cavalier solo.... (it was the Trenton War Memorial and the stage was HALF the size of McCarter's stage). So there I was as the Prince...knowing that in a few minutes the sleigh was NOT going to travel off with me and Clara with the entire cast waving goodbye. ... so the prince (me) had to get out.... and PUSH!! Dermot's wife Karen who was the Sugarplum, started to giggle and could not stop. The Sleigh bumped along sideways....so to mask our exit... they started to pump out more DRY ICE thinking that would hide the fact that we could not exit!!!! It was like pushing your car home in the mud and fog. We laughed so hard afterwards .... cause what else can you do?"

Please send along any memories. Also, Christine Chen our Managing Director has just started a Vintage T shirt contest on American Repertory Ballet and Princeton Ballet School Facebook pages. We would love for you to participate!
