Good Shepherd Youth Help Children from Darfur
In 2003, a horrible genocide started in Darfur. Because of the color of their skin, no one was safe from being ripped from their home and brutally murdered. Children have suffered the most. Almost eight years later, the war still continues. Anyone under the age of 9 who is still alive, has never known a home without fear, loss, and horrors that we will never have to face. Many of the families who survived escaped to Chad to be placed in refugee camps, where violence, raids, rapes, disease, pitiful food and clean water availability, and hopelessness seems to rule. For a child, this is not a life. Living behind barbed wire in a world so cruel; watching violence, death, and horror daily steals any chance for a childhood, little alone a hope for the future that these precious children of God deserve.
Last year, the youth of Good Shepherd started a project to build an elementary school in the Djabal Refugee Camp in Chad. There are 632 elementary aged children living in this camp without a school, without electricity, and without hope. The 2010 Gala raised funds to start the project. Good Shepherd raised $17,788.01 (plus funds raised by Beth Davis) to build a school. This school will give the children something to do during the day besides hate. It will educate the children so they do have a future. It will bring hope.
The school will be built in conjunction with the UN through the Darfur Dream Team. Any funds left over after the building is complete will be used to buy furnishings. All of the people of Good Shepherd made this dream possible.
