In Memory of Marsha Greenfield

The Downtown Sailing Center has lost another beloved sailor. Marsha K. Greenfield, who lived in Virginia but was a regular Impulse 21 skipper at the DSC passed away unexpectedly on November 14, 2011.
She was a 1976 graduate of Bryn Mawr College and a 1979 graduate of the George Washington University's National Law Center. Following graduation, she practiced with Metzger, Shadyac & Schwarz, and then with Finalco. She also ran the adventure gift service, Adventureline, Inc. Most recently, she was a Vice-President with the Student Loan Marketing Association (Sallie Mae).
Marsha could often be found sailing singlehanded on one of the Downtown Sailing Center's Impulse 21's. In 2010 Marsha was recognized as the "Sailor of Week." In addition to being an avid sailor, Marsha was a sports car devotee, and a frequent international traveler. She is survived by her husband Lawrence Greenfield, of Annandale, Virginia. Marsha was beloved by everyone and will be deeply missed. |

New Face at the DSC

There is a new face in the Downtown Sailing Center office. Calvin Newton has joined the team to support community outreach and accessible sailing programs.
Calvin is from New York and has come to the DSC as an intern through a national service program called Public Allies. The goal of Public Allies is to advance new leadership to strengthen communities, nonprofits, and civic participation. Calvin applied to work with Public Allies to make an impact on his community.
While Calvin is interning at the sailing center he is also currently enrolled in cosmetology school looking to become a license cosmetologist. He says, "People want to look good all the time, and I just want help, what better way than doing hair?" He goes to school at night while working hard at the DSC during the day.
Calvin also has always an unconditional love for music and says "music without a purpose is worthless and with it I can change the world forever, for the better''. If you ever see Calvin around the center ask him to share a few lines from his music, it's incredibly impressive.
The reason why he chose to intern at the Downtown Sailing Center is not only because he believes in its mission but he also lives with limited mobility. Calvin was born with Cerebral Palsy (C.P.) which is a condition that effect muscles and tendons. Calvin wants to reach out to others to help them understand that life is worth living no matter their limitations.
Calvin is excited about helping those less fortunate and experiencing a new adventure.
