Are You Ready to Rock and Roll?

There is no better way to kick off this Independence Day weekend than to participate with fellow Downtown Sailing Center members at July's First Friday party - and this Friday's party will be like no other!

We will be celebrating Peter Hegel, outgoing Director of Youth and Community Outreach Programs and the many contributions he has made to the Downtown Sailing Center.  Bring your memories, stories and thanks for Peter.

And what would the Fourth of July weekend by without fireworks?  With that in mind, this party will feature a flare demonstration by Steve Maddox, DSC Director of Operations.  If you've never lit a flare, this is a great opportunity to learn how they work, how long they burn and how to extinguish them.

This Friday is also your chance to leave your mark on the DSC.  There is a new Sonar coming to our fleet and we are running a Sonar naming contest.  Come Friday night and help us pick the name of our newest Sonar!  The rules of the naming contest are pretty simple.

  1. You must get an official envelope from Grady Byus - our new office manager.
  2. You must write your name, and your boat name on your envelope.
  3. You must get people to stuff that envelope with cash and checks by selling the merits of your name pick.
  4. You must return your envelope to Grady Byus at the end of the night.
  5. The person who raises the most money - wins.

Note:  The official close of the naming contest will be July 9, but all eligible names must be registered with Grady at this Friday's party.

Fair Winds and Following Seas

The Downtown Sailing Center is sad to bid farewell to Peter Hegel, the outgoing Director of Youth and Community Outreach Program. His last day is Friday, July 2, 2010. For the last month Peter has been volunteering his time to help assist Allie Robinson, the new director of youth and outreach programs, as the summer starts, but he is now ending his 3-and-a-half year tenure at the DSC.  Over that time accessible and outreach programming has expanded significantly and more than 4,000 people have come through the outreach programs.  Peter will be at the July 2 First Friday Party, so stop on by if you would like to say goodbye!
