Yaakov Want at Kibbutz
Yaakov Wang at Kibbutz Sde Eliyahu
You can help a Chinese Jew to study Torah in Israel

Yaakov Wang has a dream. This young Chinese Jew was brought on aliyah last year by Shavei Israel, along with six other young men. They are all descendants of the millennia-old Jewish community of Kaifeng, China, which once numbered nearly 5,000 people but has since dwindled to just a few hundred.

After completing their studies in Hebrew at the ulpan of Kibbutz Sde Eliyahu, Wang and his friends recently enrolled at Yeshivat HaMivtar, which is part of Rabbi Shlomo Riskin's Ohr Torah Institutions.

There, in a special program that was put together for them by Shavei Israel, they are immersing themselves in their Jewish heritage. Each day, they pore over the ancient texts of our people, delving into the history and faith that was previously out of their reach.

"I love learning Torah. It makes me feel connected to G-d," Wang says, adding, "This is what my ancestors hoped and prayed for - to be able to come home to Jerusalem and live a Jewish life."

Wang's dream is to continue studying and eventually to become ordained as a rabbi - the first Chinese rabbi in nearly 200 years!! - in order to serve his community.

For others in the program, such as Shi Heng, the opportunity to learn more about Judaism has strengthened their resolve to build new lives here in the Jewish state.

"Yes, we were born in China," he says. "But we wanted to change our future and that of our children. Our bodies may have been 'Made in China', but our souls belong to Israel."

But Yaakov Wang and Shi Heng need your help. Shavei Israel is urgently looking to raise funds to sponsor these budding young Chinese Jewish scholars. Costs such as tuition, room and board need to be covered, along with tutors, educational materials and other related expenses.

For just $25 a day, or $750 for a month, you can help a Chinese Jew to study Torah in Israel and reconnect with his roots. Please click here to visit the Support Us page on our website to make your tax-deductible donation.

Avner Diniz at the Kotel
Avner Diniz at the Western Wall
Shavei Profile: Avner Diniz - A hidden tradition ignites a passion for Judaism and Israel

Avner Diniz is sitting in his living room in the Israeli coastal city of Netanya, reflecting on the unusual path that took him from just a few faint hints of a Jewish past growing up in a Portuguese family in Mozambique, to a new life as a committed Jew studying Hebrew and Judaism in Israel.

His journey began when he was a child playing marbles with the local kids. "I remember I won a match and the losing boy was furious. He called me a "Marrano" (a derogatory term for crypto-Jews in Portuguese), Diniz recalls. "I didn't know what that was. But my great-grandmother saw everything from the window. She told me, 'the next time someone calls you that word, punch him in the nose. It is a very grave insult for our people.'"

"Our people?" the six-year-old Diniz wondered, having no idea what his great-grandmother was talking about. But he later realized that his family kept certain traditions that were different from those of other families. They abstained from eating pork or shellfish, kept milk and meat separate, and lit candles at home on Friday nights. Most intriguing to Diniz was the fact that once a year in the fall, the family would fast for 24 hours on what they called "the Great Day" while whispering strange prayers "we didn't understand."

Diniz, a curious child, began to question these practices until, one day, his great-grandmother and mother came to him and told him "you are a Jew, that's all!

Shavei Israel to sponsor special seminar for "Hidden Jews" of Poland

Exciting news from Poland! Shavei Israel is sponsoring a unique five-day seminar in the city of Dinov, about two hours from Krakow, for Polish Hidden Jews. The seminar will be held at the Polish Center for Jewish Heritage, which has built a visitor's complex, complete with hotel and synagogue, in an area known for its Hassidic history.

The seminar will take place from December 24-28. That Shabbat is the hilula (a celebration) dedicated to Rabbi Tzvi Elimelech of Dinov, the author of the book "Bnei Issachar." A contingent of Israelis will be flying in, along with 25 Polish Jews brought by Shavei Israel. They will study Hassidic thought and visit the towns of Ropczyce, Lancut, Przemysl.

Shavei
Israel's Polish emissaries will also be attending, together with other rabbis and teachers from Poland. We'll have more details in the next issue of the Roots newsletter.
