News from Steven Carney, Principal

Thank you Mrs. Dayton, Mr. Wurden, Mrs. Clifton
Western Sierra Parent Volunteers

Over the past few weeks Mrs. Dayton, Mr. Wurden, Mrs. Clifton and their Western Sierra Parent Volunteers have led their students to stellar performances.  From showcases such as the Science Fair, the Art Show in Roseville, and the Music Concert, these three teachers and their parent partners have exemplified Western Sierra's mission by showcasing their student's "intellectual and creative excellence." I applaud their fervor, time, talent and ability to bring out the best in student learning.   Thank you for all that you give and do to make Western Sierra an exceptional choice in the greater Sacramento region.

2011-12 Leadership for Western Sierra and
Rocklin Academy Schools

In 2009, when I eagerly agreed to serve in dual roles as the founding Principal for Western Sierra and the Director/Assistant Superintendent of Education for Rocklin Academy schools, it was clear that the need for a permanent Principal would evolve.  In keeping with this agreement and in preparation for the 2011-2012 school year, I will gradually transition out of the Principal role.  This includes continuing to diligently serve as Western Sierra's Principal for the remainder of this year while playing a critical role in the selection of the leader who will succeed me in continuing to build the culture of collaboration and partnership that our community is establishing at Western Sierra.  I greatly appreciate and am grateful for the incredible level of encouragement and energetic fervor from every member of the Western Sierra community as we brought this new school to life.

The search for a new Principal will begin soon. I am building a selection process that will involve our faculty, board members, parents, and students. Please check our WSCA website and future newsletters for more information about our hiring timeline and ways you may show your interest in participating in the search for our new Principal.  Additionally, the search and selection process will be discussed at the upcoming Rocklin Academy Board meeting on Monday, March 21, 2011 at 6:30 PM.

Once Western Sierra's new Principal is hired and brought fully on board, I plan to continue to partner and maintain my relationships with all of Rocklin Academy's schools, its Superintendent, and the schools' Principals to support the exceptional growth and success of this dynamic organization.

Student Celebrations

This week, it was my pleasure and honor to celebrate, with the staff, Western Sierra Students of the Quarter with a buffet style lunch provided by all staff and faculty.  Mr. Crosson and I were also honored to celebrate our 2nd quarter/1st semester C-PREP Award recipients with a lunch from In and Out Burger.  The opportunity to enjoy a meal with these outstanding students was cherished and valued by all staff and faculty. Thank you for all that your do to support the fine character of your students. Daily, we learn and grow as a culture and profession by working along side you and with your students; a partnership we take seriously and with a "whatever it takes" attitude.

Thank you,

Steven Carney

News from Dave Patterson, Executive Director

The Rocklin Board of Directors is excited to announce that it has signed a contract to purchase 660 Menlo Drive and is moving aggressively to complete the purchase of the building. This is a 64,000 square foot building located on 5.3 acres in the Atherton Center. This facility will be an outstanding permanent home for Western Sierra Collegiate Academy! The building is in a 90 day escrow period, during which we are working with the Public Facilities Investment Corporation and Piper Jaffray, a leading investment bank to arrange for long term financing of the facility.

While all the necessary steps are underway to purchase the building, until the purchase is complete, there is always the possibility of unforeseen obstacles that could delay or derail the purchase. To ensure there is a space for all existing and incoming Western Sierra students, Principal Carney and Facilities Solution Team Co-Chair, Peggy Broussard, have been working with the Solutions Team and WSCA Faculty to develop a facility contingency plan, soon to be announced, that can be implemented at our current location at Sunset Christian Center.

The Board, faculty, staff, and the Western Sierra Solutions Team are also working with JoAnn Koplin of TFO Architecture to finalize an innovative and effective learning environment for our students.  In addition, we will be scheduling opportunities for our families and prospective students to visit and learn more about this exciting facility over the next few weeks.

Western Sierra Facilities Update

  Western Sierra Crest

WSCA Facilities Solutions Team Update

2011-2012 School Year

As we continue the process for the purchase of the 660 Menlo Drive site, we are also preparing for any possibility of either a delay in occupancy or purchase. While we expect the timely purchase of the Menlo site to be finalized,  planning for alternative possibilities is prudent. To honor the request of our parents, students, faculty, administration and boards commitment to offer our complete WSCA program for students in grades 7-12, we have developed a proposal that will allow all incoming Rocklin Academy and existing WSCA students to be served at the current Sunset Christian Center facility.

General information about this contingency proposal will be presented to the Board of Directors during their regular meeting on Monday, March 21, 2011 at 6:30 PM in the library of the Turnstone campus.  After this presentation and after the opportunity for public comment, the Board will take action to approve or deny the proposal.  If the Board approves the proposal, there will be a Parent Information Night to provide an opportunity for you to learn more about this plan on Thursday, March 24, 2011 at 6:00 PM in the Atrium.

All parents are invited and encouraged to come to the Board of Directors meeting and the Parent Information Night to find out more about this contingency proposal.

No matter where WSCA is housed for the 2011-2012 school year, the Wolf spirit and mission will continue to thrive as we continue to provide the best educational choice in Placer County and all of California!

Lost and Found

The school Lost and Found is FULL! There are numerous items in our school Lost and Found, which is located in the main hall (outside of Mr. Odell's classroom).  Items waiting to be claimed include lunch totes, school binders, textbooks, jackets and more.  Please encourage your student to check the Lost and Found frequently for misplaced items. Often teachers or students will hold onto a found item until the next day when they will then deliver it to the Lost and Found.  At the conclusion of each quarter, we will donate all items to a local charity.  Please be mindful that the last day of the quarter is next Friday, March 25th.

Math Tutors Needed

The Western Sierra Math team is requesting parent support over the course of the next six weeks.   To increase our capacity to meet the needs of students requiring additional support to master  essential standards in Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, and Algebra II,  we are looking for parents who are willing to tutor students between 2:40 PM and 3:30 PM and/or 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM Monday - Friday.   A strong foundation and skill in one or all of the named mathematics is essential.   PSP is willing to give double credit for all volunteer tutoring hours served.  Please contact Mr. Fletcher, Pre-Algebra and Algebra II and Mr. Odell, Algebra I, to arrange tutoring times.  Your support and time is greatly appreciated.

CAHSEE Completed

On Tuesday, March 8 and Wednesday, March 9, our sophomores completed the first required CAHSEE (California High School Exit Exam) administered at Western Sierra. Within eight weeks, we will receive the results for each student who took this examination. Although students are able to re-take the exam if they do not pass the first time, our school's first-time pass percentage is something that colleges consider when determining the quality of a Western Sierra diploma. Our sophomores worked carefully and diligently for more than eight hours on this two day test. They also enjoyed the support of our PSP group who provided pizza and snacks to boost our sophomores' energy and brain power. Thanks to our students' hard work and our parents' support, we look forward to great results! If you would like more information, please click on the following link.

College Planning
College and Career planning are two of the most important processes your student will undertake during their time at WSCA.  The College and Career Planning Committee (CCPC) has been working hard to build opportunities and information designed to support you and your student in the planning and preparation process.

The CCPC have put together a number of events and informational opportunities for the upcoming months, including a college road trip.  If you did not receive this committee's newsletter highlighting all that is current and forthcoming, please access the College and Career Newsletter for additional information.
