Amen.

Mother Love
Some of our mothers taught us what it was like to be loved. Some others of us grew up with mothers who couldn't really teach us much about love, because they'd never really learned themselves. We tend to idealize mothers as the perfect dispensers of love.
Sometimes mothers do their best work by getting out of the way, or by leaving. After all, children need that to grow up, too. After all, even Jesus gets out of the way so we can try his way for ourselves.
When Jesus is getting ready to leave his disciples, he begins to tell them good-bye. It's not so different from the speech a mother on her deathbed might give the kids: "Now children, I won't be with you much longer. You are going to keep looking for me. . . but you can't come where I'm going. I'm giving you some new instructions: love each other, just the way I've loved you. Everybody will know whose family you come from if you love each other."
The kids get a remarkable challenge-now it's time to put to work everything they've been taught. Love one another, as I have loved you.
What does love look like? Getting out of the way, so another person can try. Blood, sweat, and tears. Feeding one another. Above all, love liberates, love sets us free to be more than we thought possible. Love one another as I have loved you. Befriend the stranger. Engage your enemy in love. Challenge the unlovable. Go hunting for the unloved.

RESERVE YOUR SEATS TODAY! SHAKESPEARE'S WEDDING MANIA AT BOSCOBEL
SUNDAY, JUNE 27 AT 6:00pm
The Fellowship Commission is delighted to begin taking reservations Sunday for another of Shakespeare's witty comedies, The Taming of the Shrew. Baptista has two daughters who need to be married off: Bianca, beautiful and docile, and Katherina, renowned for her sharp tongue and temper. As the oldest, Katherina must marry first even though she has vowed never to wed. Enter the flamboyant Petruchio who agrees to marry Kate sight-unseen when he learns of her sizeable dowry. Will he succeed in curing Kate of her quick-witted, scolding tongue, or will she prove his perfect match? Please join our Grace family and friends for this quintessential battle-of-the-sexes. We have 50 seats reserved @ $32 per ticket for the Sunday, June 27 performance at 6:00pm. As usual, picnicking overlooking the Hudson is optional beginning at 4:00pm, weather permitting. Don't tarry, say YES today, or you might miss an hilarious start to summer. Any questions? Ready to make reservations? Contact Barbara Cross during coffee hour or @ 358-4599 or send an e-mail to babcross@aol.com. You may also call the church office to reserve, (358-4599, ext. 10) then write a check ($32.00 per ticket) to Grace Episcopal Church (with Shakespeare on memo line), hand it in or mail to the church office. See you there! Barbara Cross |
CONFIRMATION REDUX: AN ALL-PARISH REFRESHER COURSE
BEGINS THIS SUNDAY WITH PARISH FORUM ON ANGLICAN/EPISCOPAL HISTORY
Whether one was confirmed 50 years ago or 5 years ago or is just now considering joining the Episcopal Church - all of us need to review the basics from time to time. Come join in with the rest of your parish community as we prepare to corporately renew our Baptismal Covenant during the Bishop's visit to Grace Church on June 6. From April 25 through May 23 the All Parish Forums (10:10-10:50am each Sunday) will be dedicated to the exploration (and explanation) of Anglican/Episcopal history (April 25), our view of scripture and ministry, our unique styles of spirituality, and our rich tradition of liturgy and music. All are invited and encouraged to attend! A note to those considering confirmation, reception or reaffirmation in the Episcopal Church: This series is part of the Adult Confirmation Course for this year. If you wish to be baptized, confirmed, received, or to reaffirm your vows or are even contemplating one of these actions, this class is for you. Please contact the clergy to let them know of your interest and they will be happy to talk with you about these steps which take place at the Bishop's visit once each year. |

To My Mother
by Wendell Berry
I was your rebellious son, do you remember? Sometimes I wonder if you do remember, so complete has your forgiveness been.
So complete has your forgiveness been I wonder sometimes if it did not precede my wrong, and I erred, safe found, within your love,
prepared ahead of me, the way home, or my bed at night, so that almost I should forgive you, who perhaps foresaw the worst that I might do,
and forgave before I could act, causing me to smile now, looking back, to see how paltry was my worst, compared to your forgiveness of it
already given. And this, then, is the vision of that Heaven of which we have heard, where those who love each other have forgiven each other,
where, for that, the leaves are green, the light a music in the air, and all is unentangled, and all is undismayed.
"To My Mother" by Wendell Berry, from Entries. Pantheon Books, 1994. |
