September 2009

Welcome to our New Families and welcome back to those of us
returning to this most extraordinary school we call Old Mill. As the Old Mill
PTA President, there is so much to do. From Kindergarten Special Friends to
Movie Night, Lapathon, Book Faire, Halloween Parade, Field Trips,
Assemblies, Authors Month, Hobby Night, Science Night, the Art Show and the
most amazing Music and Dance performances. It makes me tired just thinking of
it all again!
But the good news is, I don't do all of this myself, the
only way we do all this is because of all of you! Ingrid Tolson, my
co-president and I will continue to lead, but really all of you are doing your
part. A perfect example of your desire to help was the Volunteer sign-ups on the first day of school. Thank YOU to all of you! We've got people to help with everything! If you missed something, we've put the
originals outside the Office. So sign up still! The Walk to School Committee
sign-ups I think went up late, so please check those out and help. It is so
important to have the kids walking, biking and scootering to school.
Thank you for your time and, well, I have to say it, your
Money. Yes, given the times we're in, keeping our school functioning at its
peak level is thanks to all of you. Thank you for Measure A Parcel Tax last
year, Thank you for giving to Kiddo! and Thank you for giving to PTA. Without
each of these supports, our budget would not have balanced! So I must say it, Please
make your Lapathon Donation and buy a few lunches.
But most of all. Enjoy! It all goes so fast. Try to make it
to as many field trips as you can. Come to all of your music performances. Walk
in the Halloween Parade. Cook at the Lapathon BBQ. Enjoy your children.
Appreciate your outstanding Teachers. And always say a Mighty Thank You to our most
extraordinary principal, Jane McDonough, who gets to know each one of your
children and what they need, while managing the sticky issues of our District,
the State Budget Crisis and the many lice, flu's and heat waves that run
through this school.
Here's to a great year! "We're all in this together" Thank
YOU.

the middle school and we are so glad to have her return to Mill Valley!
Working with Sarah is...

Jodi

Also, we
welcome back Kate Foley who
returns this year as our school psychologist.
Nancy Felder is a new instructional assistant for grades 4 and 5. Nancy
brings a wealth of education and experience to the position.
And we also
welcome Joni Hendrix- known to
most of you from EDS who will take over the very important lunch office relief

Swine Flu Info
|
From Principal Jane McDonough:
Please have a plan ready to keep your child home should he/she be sick with the flu or flu symptoms this year.
If the school calls to have you take a child with a fever home, the need is urgent that the child not be in the front office where exposure is unavoidable.
If you plan now for that eventuality then if it comes at a bad time you will be ready and we will not have the risk of more students missing school for long periods of time. THANKS!
- - -
Advice from the Marin County Health and Human Services:
Not only is flu season just around the corner, it's already here. As reported in the Marin IJ, there were 35 confirmed and 70 probably cases of (swine) flu in Marin County from April through August--
not the traditional flu season; 29 people were hospitalized during this time, and there were four tragic deaths.
Please read the attached information to help protect yourself and your family.
Follow these five basic health tips:
1. If you are sick, stay home from work or school. Call your doctor to discuss symptoms and to determine if you should make an appointment (or go to the hospital). Experts note that unless, you are critical, a hospital visit will likely result in your spending a long time in the emergency room with many other sick people-- so consult your doctor first.
2. Avoid close contact with sick people. You may become ill from being near the coughing or sneezing of a sick person, or from germs in their environment.
3. Sneeze "Carefully" - Health practitioners ask that you cough or sneeze "into your elbow"-- to prevent the spread of germs. (And try to steer clear of others who are coughing or sneezing.)
4. Wash your hands - Wash frequently with soap and water, especially after coughing or
sneezing or being out in public. (If water is not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer such as Purell.)
5. Keep hands away from the eyes, nose mouth - "Dirty hands" can cause illness by
spreading germs from things we touch with our hands to the eyes, nose or mouth.
REMIND CHILDREN TO FOLLOW THESE TIPS -- ESPECIALLY THE HAND WASHING!!

Grist
A Wonderful New School Year! From Jane McDonough, Principal
"...all of us will live on in the future we make." - Senator Edward M. Kennedy
What a smooth start! Thanks to Deborah Goldman and Ingrid
Tolson, PTA co-presidents for that smooth hum of activity I took delight in on
our first day. All the students safely in their appointed classrooms, all the
teachers shining with anticipation and students ready to take up the year full
of challenges and accomplishments- brimming with that special excitement that
the first day always brings.
Our start up on the lunch changes we instituted this year
have come to fruition nicely. Stephanie Alamin deserves a huge thank you for
jumping on to the Waste Free lunch program so readily and in helping us work
directly with our students to have them be the managers and implementers of
this program. Their mastery of these habits and considerations will change
their approach to what we throw away without thinking, and support our learning
and curiosity about where it all goes, when, why and how.
Teachers have created beautiful spaces full of intriguing
and inviting learning opportunities. It is always a thrill to see these all in
completion when our Back To School night occurs and the student's initial work
has been added.
Budget news from Sacramento is pretty consistently hard to
hear. It seems like the education of our state's students may be getting badly
splintered via the messy political situation in which California finds
itself. In the meantime, we are doing
our best every day with what we have - which is so much more than most of our
colleagues out there- to deliver the best education possible to your
children. If you want to hear more
about the specifics of cuts we have made and may need to make here in Mill
Valley you should go to the district website http://www.mvschools.org/news/finance/default.htm
for a very detailed outline of actions taken and actions under consideration if
mid-year cuts come during the 2009-10 school year.
Regarding H1N1, two pieces of information (from the Center
for Disease Control) will guide us in our response to the H1N1 or "swine flu"
that is present in the general population at this time.
-
"Those with
flu-like illness should stay home for at least 24 hours after they no longer
have a fever, or signs of a fever, without the use of fever-reducing medicines.
They should stay home even if they are using antiviral drugs."
- "Based on the experience and knowledge
gained in jurisdictions that had large outbreaks in spring 2009, the potential
benefits of preemptively dismissing students from school are often outweighed
by negative consequences, including students being left home alone, health
workers missing shifts when they must stay home with their children, students
missing meals, and interruption of students' education."
Keeping the above in mind I want to make a personal plea to
every family to make a very specific plan this year for what to do should
your child need to be at home or in case they need to be sent home on short
notice with fever/flu symptoms. Sometimes
it can be hard to be late for work, or miss work or an important meeting
depending on your circumstances, and as a parent myself I know how hard it can
be to make that decision without a strong backup plan for the children's care.
So, NOW, before you need it (and
maybe you won't need it if we are all lucky) have a ready plan for a way to
have your child at home rather than be faced with the question of possibly
compromising the school population if your child develops symptoms described
above. I understand that getting
support for a sick child when you have to work is not an easy request, but I
ask it on behalf of the whole school community. Please be vigilant about your
child's health this year, and follow the CDC directive and your doctor's advice
regarding the flu. It is helpful if you keep in mind, other than our district
nurse Martha Parker, we are not
health professionals at the school, and are operating under guidance from the
county, state and ultimately federal health professional community in
responding to this issue.
Creating community and including everyone - Character Ed
this year. Handouts on this program will be provided to every class at Back To
School Night, and you will see informational posters throughout the district,
and on our website oldmillschool.org. Please be patient with us as we make some
important fixes on the teacher pages this year. All teachers received new
laptops and updated software over the summer which will make everything
smoother in the long run but which have a few glitches moving from the old
sites to the new.
After school
information has been sent to you and provided by teachers as well, but just to
help Ms. Frazier out, please be sure you have an after school plan that is
understood by all when school gets out. Students are to go to EDS, after school
classes, supervised play (check with Park and Recreation) or home. At 3 pm we have to start calling on
those children who are not in one of those places. Your cooperation is greatly
appreciated!
Welcome to the next great school year for Old Mill School!

Save the Date!
Old Mill Lapathon
Sunday, Oct 25th
11:00am - 3:00pm
Make sure the "Best Party in Town" is on your calendar! Don't miss Old Mill School PTA's biggest fundraising event of the year.
VOLUNTEERS: We still need
volunteers to help make this year's Lapathon a success! Please make sure to
turn in your volunteer sign-up sheets that were included in your First Day
Packets. We will also have a sign-up sheet at the PTA Coffee Cart on Wednesday,
9/23. We hope to see you
there!
NEW THIS YEAR: Be
prepared for the unexpected with an Emergency Preparedness Kit created
especially for Old Mill School. Look for your order form in this year's Pep
Rally Packet. Place your orders in advance and pick up your kits at Lapathon.
15% of the cost will be donated back to the school, so now is the time to buy
that kit!
LAPATHON DONATIONS: are already
being collected. Thank you! We have come to expect a level of education for our
children at Old Mill. Unfortunately, the state has significantly reduced the
level of spending on public education, and PTA is asking that the parents help make
up the difference for these budget cuts. For this reason, we are asking for a
$250 donation per child this year.

Psychologically Speaking
A Sense of Community
From Claudia Trinklein-Engman
Note:
All Mill Valley School District schools will be focusing on character
education throughout the year. Our
first target area is "building a sense of community and belonging at
school."
When we asked our
wonderful elementary counselor, Claudia Trinklein-Engman, to write about this
topic, here is what she expressed:
All of us are a part of at least two communities -the
one that we create within our homes and the neighborhood in which we live. Yet, many of us have allegiances to a
variety of other groups as well.
We may belong to a church or temple, play sports on an organized team,
belong to a book group, or hold a membership at a swim club. And to all of these groupings, we have
a varying degree of loyalty, respect and obligation to do our part to support
and nurture its existence.
And the community, however it is defined, hopefully returns its support
and care.
School is yet another vital community in which our
children spent countless hours and years.
There are even small units of community within the larger one. The sense of classroom community is as
important as the communal flavor of the entire school environment. It is a community that includes
everyone: children, caregivers and teachers. It is meant to be nurturing and supportive. It is so important that we as adults
help our children understand that the school community is part of their global
communal network. Just like at
home or on the soccer field, every "player" makes a contribution. There is no such thing as an
"unimportant" group member.
Along with the "warm and cuddly" amenities also come
community obligations - strikingly similar to any other communal
organization. At school, people
take care of each other. They look
out for one another and truly care about others around them, young and old
alike. Yet, the school also asks
that each child pulls his/her own weight in supporting the school
community. Hopefully, like the
home environment, when one child is feeling excluded, others support his
inclusion. When a child is
physically injured, peers attend to his needs. All of us are continuously encouraged to find ways to allow
each person within the school to be heard and felt respected.
As the caring adults in our children's lives, we
need to promote conversations with our youngsters about not only the meaning of
community and what they get from the school community and other communal
groupings, but also what they owe back to it. How can we all help to sustain
this nurturing environment?
We need to model the same virtues at home and in all groups with which
we affiliate. Good character
education needs to be global. It
begins at home and broadens to the schools and our society at large. We need to work collectively to promote
healthy social responsibility as well as caring communities.

Mill Valley School District Bond - Measure C
Important News
Vote on November 3, 2009
Mill Valley is fortunate to have some of the best elementary and middle
schools in the state. A critical element in maintaining our excellent
educational quality is providing our teachers and students with safe, modern
schools in which to teach, learn and thrive.
However, the majority of our schools are now between 50 and 100 years old
and are in need of significant modernization. Continuing to make piecemeal
and temporary repairs to our aging classrooms and buildings is no longer
cost-effective. The school district has spent the past two years doing a
comprehensive study on our current and future facility needs.
On November 3, Mill Valley voters will have the opportunity to approve a
bond to fund Phase 1 of the Mill Valley School District's Facilities Master
Plan. Measure C would upgrade and
modernize our elementary schools to address critical safety and capacity
issues, including:
- Updating
aging and outdated fire safety and emergency communications systems
- Repairing
and replacing leaking roofs and windows
- Providing
sufficient classroom space for all students and teachers
- Repairing
and replacing aging plumbing and electrical systems Improving
access for the disabled, as required by law
Please
learn more about this important measure by visiting www.SafeModernMVSchools.org. Or contact your school's field representative: Sarah
McNeil, srmcneil@pacbell.net.
Please
also make sure you're registered to vote and that your registration is current.
Deadline to register is Oct. 19. If you've changed your address, name or
political affiliation since the last election, you must update your
registration. Call the Marin County Registrar at 499-6456.
And
remember, please vote on Nov. 3.
Thank
You!

Speaker Event Dr. Matthew O'Byrne: "Mastery
& Competence: The Role of Learning in the Emotional Development of the
Pre-adolescent Child"
Thurs, Oct. 8th, 6:30-8:00
pm -- program
MVMS Multi-Media Room, 411
Sycamore
The
late elementary and middle school years can be a particularly stressful and
challenging time for both children and their parents. With the on-set of
puberty, the physical, emotional and social landscape of the school child
becomes considerably more complex. Dr. Matthew O'Byrne offers a unique
framework for understanding how learning and academic growth contribute to a
child's ability to successfully navigate these difficult years. His
presentation explores how learning, mastery, and the ability to feel competent
are fundamental building blocks of psychological well being and the foundations
of a healthy Self. He will
identify several of the significant stressors facing our children as well as
the crucial role parents play in providing the support and scaffolding needed
to ensure continued learning, mastery, and competence.
Dr. O'Byrne is a Clinical Psychologist with a private practice in San Rafael.
He has extensive experience working with children, adolescents and adults. He
spent many years working as a counselor in both the public and the private
school system. He currently sees many children and adolescents in his private
practice, many of whom struggle with learning issues, emotional difficulties
and substance abuse problems.

After School French Program - Oooh La La!
Starting in September 2009 at Edna Maguire:
A new afterschool French language program through the non-profit group "Education Francaise of the Bay Area" (EFBA) is starting at Edna Maguire. Afterschool classes are offered to students just beginning the study of French as well as to students who already have some French background.
We offer 6 different course levels, based on grade and prior French knowledge. Classes will take place immediately after school on the Edna Maguire school campus. Beginner classes are for 1st to 5th graders. Classes for fluent students will start in Kindergarten. French classes will be held once a week for 1.5 hour for the young beginners/young French-speakers, and twice a week for 1.5 hours for all other groups except the 6th grade group that will meet twice a week for 2 hours (fluent students).
Students from other Mill Valley public schools are welcome to attend these French classes at Edna Maguire.
Note that this program is an important commitment and we expect parents and students to commit for the entire school year, in order for the association to provide the best teachers.
Classes will start during the third week of September. Registration is still open.
Please check our website at www.efba.us , and contact Catherine Klifa at millvalleyfrench@gmail.com for more information.
