PW Ladies 1

"WOW!  God Will Do Wonders Among You!"

"Then Joshua said to the people, 'Sanctify yourselves; for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you."

- Joshua 3:5

Thirteen Presbyterian members, 12 PW women and one man, from five of the churches in Lake Huron Presbytery journeyed to Louisville, Kentucky to be a part of 2,900 other Presbyterians in Worship, prayers, fellowship, leadership training, sightseeing and hosting other women guests form around the world.  It was also a time of remembering and reunion for some and an unforgettable experience for others.  It was wonderful to see and hear the Rev. Dr. Rhashell Hunter again as she gave her sermon on "Mother's Baby Girl", a take on on the prodigal son Bible story.  She also was one of the Welcome Speakers from PC(USA) leaders as she is the head of Women's Ministries.  The others were: Linda Valentine, GAC Executive Director; Gradye Parsons, GA Stated Clerk and Bruce Reyes-Chow, GA Moderator.

It is custom the the officers of General Assembly come and speak to the voting reps at the business meeting and also to the PW women in a plenary session.  Many members of the Presbyterian Church (USA) have never had the priviledge to hear from these officers in person.  One of the greatest thrills of coming to the triennial gatherings is to hear from the leaders of the denomination.

Besides participating in the great workshops available and covering a great number of different subjects and leadership skills, the group of five first-times learned what a connectional church is all about.  What a wonderful time we had to see Elder Chris Wolf, installed to one of the three top positions in the Churchwide Presbyterian Women Organization.  Chris is now the Vice-Moderator for Peace and Justice!

Some of our eight members who attended this event have already started a special account to save for the next gathering in the year 2012 to be held in Orlando, Florida.  How nice it would be to have more of our church PW groups able to be among the number attending to learn, and worship with thousands of other women while seeing and hearing the wonders God is doing among us.

Useful Items Sought for Malawi Central Africa

First Presbyterian Church of Bay City is sending a Sea/shipping container to Malawi Africa with school, medical, agricultural supplies, tools, clothing, bicycles, computers, books  etc. Choir robes and Clergy gowns are also treasured commodities.  These items will aid in creating cottage industries, providing for sustenance and enhancing the standard of living.  The container itself will remain upon delivery as a shelter or distribution center.  This is the third container (size of a semi trailer) that has been sent.

Malawi is a tiny land locked country in South Central Africa and is predominately Presbyterian.  It is bordered by Zambia, Mozambique and Tanzania.  Malawi is among the poorest countries in the world.  All items are donated with additional essential items purchased.  You can read more about Presbyterian connections in Malawi in the Mission Yearbook for Prayer and Study.

Items need to be to First Presbyterian Church by September 15

A Letter from LHPs  Rhashell Hunter

Rhashell Hunter Dear Friends,

I bring you greetings from the staff of Racial Ethnic and Women's Ministries/PW, where we are returning to a normal level of busyness in the office after a summer full of events where we joined with constituents in worship, fellowship, and renewal. In June, our ministry area planned and hosted 30% of the conferences at the Big Tent. The Racial Ethnic Convocation, the Multicultural Church Conference, and the New Immigrant Convocation were all held as part of the Big Tent event in Atlanta in June.  It was wonderful to see them come together and to see the rich multiculturalism and diversity. All of us have the potential to learn from the many racial ethnic and global Presbyterians with whom we gathered with this summer.

With little time to relax, we continued preparations to welcome 2,500 persons to the Presbyterian Women's Churchwide Gathering, which was held at the Convention Center in Louisville in July.  Many of the attendees remarked that the plenary sessions, workshops, forums, exhibits, and preachers were excellent.  Also, mission co-workers were commissioned at a glorious service of worship during the Churchwide Gathering. Another highlight of this triennial event was the many global partners who traveled to Louisville and participated in the Gathering, particularly those from the PW Global Exchange to Eastern Europe.  Many of the conversations became sacred exchanges with sisters in Christ from across the world. We discovered from our sisters and brothers from many different places how they witness to the Good News of Jesus Christ and the ways they engage in mission, evangelism, and work toward justice.

An additional way that the Racial Ethnic and Women's Ministries/PW ministry area is creating avenues for women to share and exchange ideas about their faith lives is through the Web site for All Women in the Church. Launched in the spring, this social networking Web site welcomes all women to engage in conversations, join groups, and explore their Reformed identity with other women and friends in the church. In just a few short months, the site has attracted women of different ages, cultures, theological perspectives and from different continents.

One such woman is Rev. Rachel Schwab of Hawaii who asked other members how they balance their roles as pastors with their roles as mothers in the discussion in the Forum called, "Rev. Moms." Rachel tells her own story of serving a congregation that welcomes children and supports her as a mother. In worship, Rachel is able to balance her role of mother and pastor, literally, as she holds her son, Noah, in her arms as she preaches and prays over the sacraments before communion.  In sharing her own story, Rachel prompted other women to share their experiences of having children and being pastors. This is just one example of how All Women in the Church is creating ways for women to speak to each other and to us at the GAMC. I welcome you to view this short video to learn more about the Web site.

I hope that you experienced renewal this summer through your participation in the Big Tent, the Churchwide Gathering, and the numerous other faith-renewing opportunities offered by the Church. Have a great end of summer, and we look forward to seeing you this fall as we join together to faithfully serve the church.

Peace and Blessings,

Rhashell Hunter
Racial Ethnic and Women's Ministries/PW
