Welcome autumn!  For me, autumn is the time of year to gather up, settle in, and get ready for everything to come.  For many, it is a favorite time of year as the hectic pace of summer ends, when we are not trying to squeeze one last activity in on the weekends, when we can take a moment to enjoy all that surrounds us.  The school year is finally smoothing out, the "newness" of it all is starting to wear off, and the quirks

and changes are becoming familiar.  I don't know about you, but I finally feel like I can take a deep breath and relax a bit.

If you are ready for some relaxation and some professional rejuvenation, why don't you join me and some of my friends in Dearborn?  We will be there October 27-29, for "Dare to Dream," MAME's 37th annual fall conference. The roster of presentations by our talented colleagues is amazing, and you will find a listing and description in the conference section of MAME's website, www.mimame.org.  In addition, the MAME 4ever retirement SIG has some ideas brewing that will benefit us all.  Don't forget to let Gwenn Marchesano know if you are available to volunteer your time during the conference!  You will have opportunities to connect with other MAME members, and help out the organization at the same time.  Need further convincing to send in your registration form?  Don't forget about these events...

*And much, much, more!

It is time to reward yourself for getting the school year started right!  You will bring back some ideas to implement on Monday, as well as reconnect with friends and colleagues from around the state.  Most of all, you will take some professional time for yourself, to prepare for what is around the bend during the 2010-2011 school year.  I hope that you will dare to dream with me of a better tomorrow in school libraries for all of us.

Best to you,

Lynn Gordon

AASL Vision Tour Coming Soon to Michigan!
Vision Tour Logo
by Jeanna Walker, Portage Northern High School

Dr. Nancy Everhart, President of the American Association of School Librarians and the Director of the PALM Center, a research center dealing with school libraries at Florida State University, will be traveling this school year to visit a selected outstanding school library media program in each state.  Her stop in Michigan on November 18th is Portage Northern High School Learning Commons in Southwest Michigan.

According to AASL's Vision Tour website, Dr. Everhart's tour is aligned with the "national AASL initiative, Learning4Life (L4L). The L4L plan supports states, school systems, and individual schools preparing to implement the Standards for the 21st-Century Learner and Empowering Learners: Guidelines for School Library Programs. The plan will also increase awareness and understanding of the learning standards and guidelines and create a committed group of stakeholders with a shared voice."  Each selected library media program will serve as a model that can be replicated in a visual way nationwide. Dr. Everhart will be showcasing to the nation the importance of active school library programs in our students' learning and achievement. She already has a theme song for the Vision Tour, compliments of the Tallahassee Boys' Choir (YouTube), a logo, and T-shirts!

What does it mean to be Michigan's representative to showcase our library media program on the Vision Tour? Excitement, pride, and celebration! We are hopping every day from 7:00 AM, when the doors open, to the end of the day. With a population of 1300 students, we are an active learning environment. We currently average 4000 students each week learning and collaborating in our Library Learning Commons. As part of a recent bond issue, our school is undergoing a major remodel. Our Learning Commons was remodeled last summer to fully envision our goal of delivering 21st Century skills to our students and teachers. With a media classroom and 3 classroom areas in the Library Media Center, all equipped with our Technology Enhanced Classroom model, our Library Media Center/Learning Commons is overflowing with teaching and learning.

I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of Dr. Everhart and busily contacting local community members, university professors, and state officials to be part of our celebration.  The Portage Public Schools Public Relations Department, the Portage Northern High School Student Senate, and the Portage Northern Parents' group will be actively involved in planning the celebration. It will be "business as usual" in our Learning Commons the day of Dr. Everhart's visit. We want to show her our active, dynamic library media program in action.

Create, collaborate, and communicate - the mission of the Portage Northern High School Learning Commons program. Now we can add "celebrate" to our mission!

Great Expectations for Fall Presentations!

Looking for a good presenter for you next MAME regional meeting?

Here are some suggestions from MAME 17 that were well received by those who attended.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" - Modern Technology (presented Spring 2010 @ Mercy High School Media Center)

Jessice Cooper, Oakland County Prosecutor and former Judge, Julie McMurtrey gave a fascinating yet disturbing presentation on the ramifications of students caught "Sexting". There are probably many prosecutors in your county who would be willing to make this type of presentation to your local MAME group or Middle School and High School students. Check with your county prosecutor and ask!  It might prevent a student from getting into trouble with the law. (This was the Bad and Ugly use of the Internet.)

Sarah Sindelar gave a great presentation later that same evening on the "Good Internet Usage" Her topic was on "Second Life", a virtual world where users socialize.

On the flip side:

In Fall 2009 we had author, Joni Bodart, do a presentation on using technology for Booktalks.  It turned out she used the web 2.0 application - Animoto, which many of us already use.  It was disappointing to anticipate a well known author from so far away and not come away with any new ideas.  Joni was good for those who were new to doing a "digital" booktalk. She had a decent outline and some sample sites of where to find digital booktalks.  If you are looking for creative ways to do booktalks, you may want to save money and ask on the MAME listserv!

Coming up:

On November 11, MAME 17 will meet in Berkley to hear Laura Schiller talk about how National Standards tie into the Media Curriculum.

SL 21
21 Measurement Criteria for Michigan School Libraries For 21st Century Schools

Please consider using the SL 21 tool to raise awareness of
your programs and gain
some recognition for the
good things you do.

The tool can be found at:  www.michigan.gov/SL21.

In February 2010, the Library of Michigan and its Board of Trustees endorsed this new tool to help school librarians and their administrators evaluate the quality of their school library programs. The "SL21" is a voluntary instrument designed to help educate administrators about what a good school library should offer and to help give recognition to and advocate for those school libraries that are doing a good job and ensuring student achievement. SL21 is designed around the new AASL Standards for the 21st Century Learner, and is written with a minimum of library jargon for ease of use with school administrators.

SL21 is divided into 3 main sections:
1) Teaching for 21stCentury Learning,

2) Building the 21st Century Learning Environment, and

3) Leading the Way to 21st Century Learning.

To achieve Qualified and Exemplary Status for their School Library program, completed criteria measurement evaluations are to be submitted to the Library of Michigan, an Office of the Michigan Department of Education. Status earned will be valid for two years.
