Our Tokyo Chapter Dazzles -
World Wings' First Asian Convention

TOKYO--- In the midst of a beautiful garden setting, the Princely Megasites of Takanawa set the scene for World Wings International's first Asian Convention, October 21-23. Our Tokyo Chapter extended its most gracious hospitality to delegates from all over Europe and the United States. Nearly 200 members and guests, who enjoyed an array of events, entertainment and tours.

The opening Cocktail Party on Thursday evening was held high above the city at the Top of TOCHO on the 45th floor of Tokyo Metropolitan North Tower.  The views of Tokyo spread out below were spectacular! Everyone enjoyed the music beautifully played by Mayako Honda while enjoying a sumptuous selection of hors d'oeuvres.

The general meeting featured a famous Japanese
television commentator, who produced a weekly travel
documentary, "The World Around Us." Ms. Kaoru Kanetaka
flew all over the world during the period, 1959 - 1984,
interviewing dignitaries and visiting over 150 different
countries. Since Pan Am co-sponsored the series, she flew
on PAA and recalled the wonderful experiences of Pan Am First Class travel - the food, the service and the people.

Friday evening those who joined the optional dinner/cruise enjoyed a dinner and short cruise on a dinner boat in Tokyo Bay.  A caricaturist entertained us while creating wonderful cut-outs of cranes, panda bears, guest's profiles and more.  The lights were bright, the evening clear and Tokyo was a pretty picture to top off the evening.

Many Tokyo chapter members were attired

in beautiful kimonos to greet guests at the gala
dinner. Centerpieces on the table were laden with
gifts, memorabilia and Japanese crafts, handmade
by members of the chapter. An elegant dinner
with free flowing wine preceded the entertainment, which included a live performance of classical and popular Japanese music on traditional musical instruments  and a special appearance by a noted dancer.  The evening ended with all the delegates and guests dancing to folk music around the room. Then it was time to bid  sayonara and arigato to the Tokyo chapter.

A Family Affair -
The China Clipper
 75th Anniversary Celebration
Calls Pan Amers Home

After 20 years of being away from my Pan Am family that I write about, when I arrived at the Marriott in San Francisco, I felt overwhelmed by a sense of "coming home." I had not expected to see many people that I know, and was amazed to see people that I had flown with in Miami, San Francisco, New York, and Los Angeles. So many precious faces. So many memories. Some friends go back 45 years!  And then there's that strange, wonderful feeling of meeting people for the first time, yet knowing that we share a heritage that makes us "family." This is my favorite reunion that I've ever attended, and there's one word for me that sums it up: it was magical.

                                                                   - Dr. Helen Davey

We're still talking about it. The spirit, the pride, the thrill of coming back to San Francisco where modern aviation began with the flight of the China Clipper, 75 years ago.  At the China Clipper 75th Anniversary Celebration, everywhere we looked was an old friend, a memory, a cry of recognition, an embrace. The cocktail party at The Marriott, welcoming us. The airport museum tour, a tribute to Pan Am and the first Transpacific flight - an amazing feat of skill, dedication, vision  and sheer courage, opening the Far East to the world.

The dinner cruise of San Francisco Bay, past Treasure Island, into the sunset and under the Golden Gate Bridge, following the path of the China Clipper as it flew under the Golden Gate and into history.

The Cuckoo's Nest Cocktail Party - a tribute to the IGS and the pilots who kept the corridors of freedom open for Berliners. The recollections lovingly recalled in The Memory Book.

    Norma andTrippe
World Wings President Norma Simon accepts the Clipper Heritage Award from Pan Am Historical Foundation Chairman, Edward Trippe.

For four days, our fallen eagle soared again and so did our pride at being part of the legend.  Pride in World Wings, recipient of the Pan Am Historical Foundation's Clipper Heritage Award for humanitarian contributions involving aviation and pride in our own President, Norma Simon, whose dedication to CARE and our other charitable efforts has made us a philanthropic force to be reckoned with. Pride in the World Wingers whose hard work, creative spirit and dedication brought back the style, sophistication and grace that made us proud to be part of Pan Am.
sTEERING COMMITTEE

The Steering Committeee that made it all possible - World Wingers (l to r) Barbara Sharfstein, Sally Andersen, Jane Euler, Marrianne Steer and Christine Elmquist.

Torrential rain on Saturday night didn't dampen our spirit. Crossing the bridge to Treasure Island, we entered the 1930s-era terminal to find it transformed with dinner tables perfectly set under a mural of the legendary Martin 130 flying boat.  Cocktails were served on a balcony overlooking the scene and the program traced the historic flight of the China Clipper and the vision behind it.

SHIP AND PALNEPerhaps that vision is missing today, in our public life, in the aviation world.  But we should remember that this flight, the amazing feat of technology that changed the world forever, was accomplished at the height of a worldwide depression and it was done by people with imagination, courage and discipline.  That's our heritage.  Our family.  And after the China Clipper Celebration,  we all stood a little taller.

                                                   - Anne Sweeney

STILL FLYING HIGH

Two outstanding World Wingers were honored for their charitable contributions at the World Wings annual convention in Tokyo.

Congratulations to....

Phillip Keene, named Member of the YearKEENE Phillip Keene of the Los Angeles Chapter is a relatively new member of World Wings but in just a year, he has made an impact!  A member of the cast of the hit TV series, The Closer, Phillip created a special charity drawing that netted World Wings $1,675 for CARE's programs for women and girls. The prize was a visit to the set of The Closer and a meeting with the stars. Phillip  personally donated lunch and a two-night stay at the Beverly Hill Hotel for the winner and a guest.

Phillip joined Pan Am in 1988 and was based in London and Miami.  After Pan Am's demise, he moved to Los Angles where he earned a degree in History/Art History from UCLA.  He then took up acting and landed the role of Buzz in The Closer.

Renate van Kempema, recipient of the President's Award.

Former Miami Chapter President Renate Van Kempema  has long been a passionate supporter of CARE and that passion reached a peak last summer when she completed the 264- mile CARE Cycle Challenge by cycling from London to Paris.  Renate's Ride raised over  $10,000 for CARE.  Renate has raised additional funds  through sales of her legendary Apfelstrudel and Black Forest Cake.

Renate has been a valued member of the World Wings teams that visit CARE projects around the world and can be found actively supporting CARE's advocacy projects.

A native of Germany, Renate joined Pan Am in 1967 and now flies for Delta.
